Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

To preceed any questions and issues when connecting, I´ve discovered after numerous tries and reconfigurations that privoxy installation might interfere although not expicitly addressed for usage. Uninstall the app ,deactivate privoxy service or simply kill the privoxy process and you will find your way to a successful connection.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

why didn't nokia put PAN support into diablo - not exactly rocket science!
and why are these vital system apps close source?

mutter mutter grrr grrr.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

Eh, it's not that big of a deal to me. I bought the n810 knowing that PAN wasn't supported. It's awesome that there's a package for it, and that Nokia is going to make sure that package works again.

In the meantime, the hack is simple enough. Of course, I'd really like more of the hardware integration open sourced, or abstracted so higher level components could be open sourced. (Not because I'd work on it, but because there are plenty of awesome devs in the community that actually can :)

I just wanted to say "Thanks andreww" for your work on getting Bluetooth PAN working in Diablo. Hopefully Nokia will soon alleviate the need for this two step workaround, but in the interim it's a lifesaver. I took the plunge and re-flashed my N800 back up to Diablo tonight and was able to get Bluetooth PAN working by following your WIKI. It was nice to see it broken down a bit and understandable for a Linux novice like myself. Much appreciated!

does this thing help to connect to PC running BT on Windows?
I cannot clearly connect my N810 to PC, Windows tells connection exists, but on tablet I don't see it

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

I'm not sure how Windows creates Bluetooth networks. You might want to look up some documentation that says if it's PAN, DUN, etc. Also check basic BT connectivity by making sure your computer is visible, that the devices are in range and maybe that you can send a file to the n810.

If that fails, try searching this forum or looking through the wiki. I'm sure I've read about other people doing that before. They might have documented it.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

when I start your script then N810 tries find my cellular phone - I use it to access Inet through GPRS when travel

but now BT on phone turned off thus nothing happiness... N810 doesn't just see BT dongle ten inches far from it...

I tried another way - I used script from other thread and then started DUMMY connection created as you suggested

I got 2 connections on the N810 - 1st one just Ethernet connection to PC, without IP address assigned (PC signaled about it) and 2nd one connection "nowehere" with IP:169.254.102.188 (this is IANA's address... not in my network) - both connections are wlan0 - wlan0 and wlan0:1

and both are useless - ping tells there is no Internet connection

anybody got BT PAN with PC working in Diablo?.....

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

Sorry, I can only confirm that it works with a cell :-/ I don't have a Windows PC to try it with. I looked on my mac and didn't see any obvious ways to share my internet connection.

I don't think the small wrapper script that I wrote has anything specific to cell phones, so if you've seen posts that suggest PAN on a PC worked in chinook or earlier with the pan package, I would guess that it can work in Diablo as well.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

This bug is now resolved.

From Bugzilla:
Quote:

The dummy network module is now uploaded to the repository. From the
commandline as root do 'apt-get install libicd-network-dummy', as its not
visible through Application manager. The network name is hardcoded for now so
one does not need to run the gconf setting command described in the wiki
somewhere.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

i think this fixes the issues with people who have the ability to set the phone to make a PAN connection to the tablet, i.e nokia phones .. still doesnt help users with SE phones as the connection has to be made from the tablet to the phone rather than the other way round because you cannot initiate a PAN connection on SE phones .. you have to be 'invited' to do it .. i'd be pleased to be proved wrong though !!!

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

The Nokia fix works. I'm currently trying to get an updated version of maemo-pan into the maemo-extras repository.
The Nokia fix, however, expects a hardcoded name for the connection. "Bluetooth-PAN" in the connection dialog will thus be replaced by "Dummy network". There's nothing I can do about this.

Also, you might run into conflicts if you install more than one package setting up a dummy connection.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

I'm sorry but I'm a bit confused about this process. I followed the instructions on the website for 1.0 (using 1.0.1) I setup the BT connection between my Q9c and the N810 using the phone setup in CP. I can now see the DUMMY network but ONLY when I click connections under connectivity, but I don't understand how to connect to the dummy network.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

Bump.

I've read this thread, the wiki, and any other related threads that I could find through forum search or google and I'm still having no luck.

I'm using a Dash on wm6.1 and an N810 running the most up to date version of Diablo. I've downloaded the maemo-pan 1.0.1 package and am able to connect to the "Dummy network" but then get the message "could not connect to phone"

I've paired the dash and have it as a trusted device but no dice.

Please help and thanks again for all of your collective work on this issue!

Did you run the "Internet Sharing" app on the q9c first?

andreww 2008-08-29 07:43

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

@Rohan:

Did you set the phone as your default device in the control panel? I'm pretty sure that's what maemo-pan tries to connect to. That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

Also, like jhoff80 mentioned in response to someone else, make sure you run the Internet Connection Sharing app on the phone. I think it's buried in the windows directory w/ wm 6.1, you'll have to look up the app name somewhere else. (Sorry, I use wm5)

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

@Andreww

By the default device do you mean choosing it as my phone under the bluetooth/phone icon in the control panel?

I've tried it with and without the Dash selected as the phone and neither one works. I'm running the Internet Sharing application on the Dash with "bluetooth PAN" selected and then pairing the phone and IT.

I've got a Tytn as well so I'll fire that up and see if there's any difference.

Thanks for your help!

Rohan 2008-08-29 19:48

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

Following up, maemo-pan works perfectly with my Tytn. Very odd.

At least I've got a solution for the moment!

I'll keep plugging away with the dash and will post if I figure anything out.

Thanks.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

I added my N810 as a bluetooth companion device to my laptop, but even though the N810 lists Bluetooth-PAN as a connection option, the laptop bluetooth manager (Windows XP) swears the tablet doesn't have pan capabilities.

????

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

I was gonna say gourmand added some stuff about connecting with a PC, but I think it's only for using your PCs net connection:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi...tle=Diablo_PAN

So... does the n810 really have a bluez module for sharing over PAN, or is it possibly just a bug in bluez (or somewhere else) that claims to support PAN?

I think Nokia's (threw that in just for you, texrat :)) network manager might be too simple to share the other way around over BT or WiFi, but I'm sure you could manually set up an adhoc wifi network to share with your PC.

Texrat 2008-09-29 06:22

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

I have been actually looking for 2 things:

1) sharing my laptop's internet connection via bluetooth;

2) sharing any tablet's internet connection (mainly with other nearby tablets) using BT

So that wiki article is helpful, thanks.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

From what I know.

The N8*0 was never claimed by Nokia to support PAN. It supports DUN out of the box. To connect to a phone that uses PAN, you need pycage's maemo-pan from extras.

(sorry, misread that)

The tablet initates the PAN connection and because pan is a hack, it's not listed as supported.

Regarding sharing an N8x0's internet connection using PAN, usually this is done in Linux with BlueZ by using pand. pand is not shipped with the standard bluez install on the tablets but you can get it by installing bluez-utils-test:
http://repository.maemo.org/pool/dia...sso4_armel.deb

No idea how to use pand however.

That wiki article is outdated btw. That workaround is NOT needed since nokia finally put out an update for dummy connections. If you use that method and start up an ad-hoc connection, you will waste battery. Just installing maemo-pan is enough.

andreww 2008-09-29 06:48

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

I saw that ad-hoc connections drain battery in the original-original thread when going for a workaround, so it specifically ifdown's the wifi connection... not sure if that really does the trick.

Now for the important part... I meant to update the wiki page to say it was outdated (considering I'm not even using it now that they've fixed the bug). When gourmand updated it with the PC-connectivity stuff, I mentioned that he should probably update it to mention the bug, but oh well :)... I've updated it now.

Re: Bluetooth-PAN in Diablo

I don't want to revive a dead thread -- but I was trying to connect my N810 to my laptop via PAN like some people were talking about here, and was able to do it after some poking around.

Thanks to the Maemo-PAN project, it is pretty easy if you can convince your PDA that your laptop is a phone. To do that on a Linux machine, I did...

Smartphone:
sudo hciconfig hci0 class 0x5a020c

And if you want to go back, a laptop is:
sudo hciconfig hci0 class 0x5a010c

Then I just paired it up as if it were a phone and it zipped right on. I also use Ubuntu and the Blueman packages, though, and turned on PAN and GN support.

Hope this'll help someone else looking into doing something similar later. :)
