You need to type "sudo su -" (note the spaces).

Make sure you are connecting to VNC display 0. (The address should be <IP of server>:0)

I just saw your post right now,
I have disabled my firewall, and I'm using WIFI thru a linksys router.
Ip adress is a local ip(192.168.2.100)
I have no idea about the VNC display 0??

ercanmetin 2006-07-09 18:58

EXXELENT!!!
I have now connected to VNC
I don't know how that happened but I got connected :)

ercanmetin 2006-07-09 19:03

wait a minute
it was the firewall
even though I had VNC as an exception. It was blocking it...

Scaling supported?

Hi,

I installed 0.3.2-i and works fine.

For me server side scaling would be important. This feature is supported for examply by UltraVNC. I already can control my MediaCenter PC using vnc. but it would be much easier if I could scale my desktop area 1280x768 to Nokias 800x480.

Can someone further develop 0.3.2-i to make it support scaling? Or is the only way to port for example UltraVNC viewer for Nokia 770?

Or does someone know if there is some other vnc software for Nokia 770 that supports scaling? Available or under development?

I unfortunately lack the technological skills to do it myself...

Does anyone else have a problem with the VNC pretending to load, then disappearing? After every reboot, it loads exactly once. Then when I try to go into VNC Viewer it says "Loading VNC Viewer" for about 30 seconds then disappears.

penguinbait 2006-07-10 18:57

no problems here

It loads consistently, it did hang my 770 when the firewall was turned on, on the windows XP box I was connecting to. I had to ssh to kill vnc and then everything was good again.

As documented:

"NOTE: Users should close application from the bottom toolbar as closing from the main window causes problems re-launching."

DOH!
RTFM, Dan. ;)

=DC= 2006-07-10 21:14

Also, closing from the drop down menu works as an alternative. I am still trying to figure out the problem with closing from the main window, so stay tuned.

johsua 2006-07-10 22:05

When I go to type it opens the thumb keyboard. Is there a way to make it open the other keyboard instead? Otherwise it works well.

VNC Viewer 0.3.3-i

Okay, I finally managed to fix the re-launch issues by adding some code that was apparently missing. That thing was bugging the hell out of me and I'm sure many of you all :D . So, here's the new version:

hallgreng 2006-07-11 00:37

DC,

Do you have any experience with programming, or are you just flying by the seat of your pants and learning as you go along?

Regardless, VNC was at the top of my list of wants -thanks a lot for picking this project up!

=DC= 2006-07-11 00:42

I am actually learning as I go, but I've always had an uncanny ability to learn various skills very quickly.

Icon missing?

Hi!
Thank you for this port on IT2006: I was waiting for it!
It works perfectly except that I've noticed that there was no icon associated with the application: am I wrong or an icon was displayed on IT2005 version?

=DC= 2006-07-11 14:22

Yeah, that's the strange part. If you install a program like Maemo Mapper it shows up. I haven't been able to figure out what causes it to not show up just yet. Is anyone else having the same issue?

If you're talking about the task navigator icon, check out the Minimo release notes, I rember it had the same issue and was solved by adding a single line in the code, and it also was clearly explained onto the release notes.

Checked it for you :-) If you were talking about this problem, I'd give it a try

"Fixed lack of entry on task navigator by adding StartupWMClass=minimo into
.desktop file. Minimizing it possible now :) - thanks henry."

Thanks maxilogan, I'll make the changes for the next version.

Fullscreen button nor working?

ANother thing I've just noticed: on my N770, the fullscreen button does not work, I need to click the proper icon in the toolbar to put VNC fullscreen. Anyone having noticed the same?

=DC= 2006-07-11 18:25

I believe the fullscreen button works as tab in VNC viewer. I'll see if I can make a version that enables the fullscreen button to do what it is supposed to do. Would anyone out there rather leave it as the Tab key?

One way is to enable both Launch via rocker key and Launch via touch screen under the Finger tab in the Text input settings.

mk500 2006-07-12 06:54

It's workng quite well. Good job =DC= !!

Much appreciated!

That's the idea behind the word "community". I'll give you my advices ad help to have a better functioning program.

If I have anything that could help programmers, or other users, it's natural for me to share informations.

hallax 2006-07-13 21:52

Hi,

UltraVNC that I previously mentioned, supports scaling but actually only runs on Windows. So that´s no use.

But apparently RealVNC supports scaling and that also runs on linux. Not the free version, but still.

See this: http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc...er/053395.html

So if someone just knew how to compile this RealVNC viewer (Enterprise Edition i think...) for Maemo 2.0, we´d have a vnc supporting scaling!

Anyone with the skills needed and nothing else to do? ;-)

Am I really the only one after scalable VNC?

No, you're not. It's in the vnc version from openpma I use on my Archos PMA400. It's a zoom feature. It should be possible to port that version (openpma.org). If I can get some free time, I was going to look into it, but if anyone else wants to persue it, please do. :D

Clay 2006-07-18 13:00

I suspect you very well may be the only one. I have never been able to read scaled vnc screens, even on a 1024x780 PC client. I can't imagine scaling on the noky. I can barely read un-scaled text on the noky screen. It kind of surprised me to see the request in the first place.

[edit: wait, are we talking about scaling or zooming ???]

hallax 2006-07-18 13:42

hi,

I'm talking about scaling. it would be great if on the VNC server I could scale my desktop by dividing the resolution by 1.6. so my 1280x768 would fit perfectrly on my nok770 800x480.

yes, it might be that text would be unreadable. but my intention is to use my MediaCenter pc via VNC. i could set tv recordings from work etc...

tjb 2006-07-18 13:47

So has anyone had any luck getting the 770 vncviewer connected to any desktop Gnome vino servers? It seems to connect but then locks up for me.

paulh 2006-07-29 18:50

Is scrolling working in the 2006 version of VNC? The wiki page describes it as working like the 2005 version, holding the directional pad, but I haven't been able to get it to work.

I understand it is has only recently converted for 2006 (thanks for that), but wondered if I'm missing something.

I had the same problem - besides a few other. Then I built my own binary, unfortunately I did not build a package yet.
If you want to give it a shot, the binary is attached. Just copy it onto the device with the regular vncviewer package installed and either start it from where you copied it to or move it to /usr/bin and start it from the Extras menu.

paulh 2006-07-31 02:25

Excellent, that works! Thank you very much!

I have a PC under the TV( to use as a PVR) so it has no monitor. This gives me a quick and non-blurry way to access it (the tv output is not good for text, even in 800x600).

edgley 2006-08-02 23:25

Thank you also.

I have one issue though.
I leave my VNC running on my 770 permently, connected to my server.
When the 770 goes into deep sleep, maybe after an hour or so, when I wake it up it has lost the connection.

I then have to take it out of full screen, turn on the tool bar, reconnect and reverse.
I dont suppose this is something that might be / could be / please looked at for the next release?

=DC= 2006-08-03 01:29

Sorry to keep everyone waiting for an update to VNC viewer, but I seem to have been hit with "developer's curse" where I've become too busy to have any free time to work on the project for some time now. If anyone would like to take up where I left off, please feel free to do so.

Here is the packaged version of the binary I posted before.

My understanding is that this alternative version of the VNC Viewer program, provides improved usability/functionality over the original developed by AaronL which is currently available via this Thread

So we install the 1st the Version provided by AaronL, then include this new package and then the improvements are what exactly?

Is there a clear breakdown anywhere which combines information to understand what the latest version provides with regard to functionality and parameters that could be adjusted under the hood. (I have been searching through threads etc?)

Aaron's version was built for OS edition IT 2005, it doesn't install under IT 2006. Then =DC= rebuilt an IT 2006 package of Aaron's version. This variant did not run satisfyingly for me (e.g. scrolling with hardware keys did not work).

Then I compiled the vncviewer myself, without building a package for it. This fixed the problems I had with =DC='s package. This was the version I referred to in today's previous post. It has an IT 2006 package attached to it. There are absolutely no improvements compared to Aaron's IT 2005 version other than it installs under IT 2006.

There are no improvements. If you run IT 2006, install my package. If you run IT 2005 install Aaron's package.

MikeL 2006-08-27 14:29

OK, it's my mistake with regard to which thread provides the 2006 version of VNC Viewer that I had installed. It was this very thread and this post within the thread http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...2&postcount=52 I must have become confused whilst reading up on how the VNC viewer worked on the Nokia 770 (What hardware keys and menus do what etc)

So as you have explained (Thanks) we replace the vncviewer_0.3.3-i_armel.deb package from =DC= with the new vncviewer_0.3-1_armel.deb from guardian_de to get all functionality provided by the original vncviewer_0.3_arm.deb package (OS 2005 only) from AaronL.

It would be a good idea if someone was to ultimately collate the valid usability information on options available from the OS2005 & 0S2006 VNC Viewer threads and/or update the wiki or include the whole VNC Viewer in Maemo garage perhaps?

wmoore 2006-09-14 00:50

Is it possible to start this vncviewer in listen mode? It appears to ignore command line parameters.
