Anyone got their 2gig card working on the NEW OS? I'm afraid to do it again after it gave me a white screen.

For the unbathed, always encode with low resolution and high bitrate. You'll manage about 120MB per hour of video... Thats like 8 hours of video on a 1GB MMC card.

What resolution are you using Bowie? I had issues playing video at 352 x 208 at 30 fps, but was able to get it working at 15 fps.

Note sure if this happens for others, but after restoring my backup (settings and bookmarks) from the Beta OS, if I reboot my 770 (which is running the "final" image) the word "BETA" appears in the system tray for a few seconds, then disappears. It's a minor bug, but irritating and once again raises a question mark about Nokia QA...

The beta text never showed up for me. Anyone else having the same problem as Milhouse?

Yeah, it might suck for users with 2GB cards that they have to use two 1GB partitions, but personally I'd rather Nokia didn't rush in a kernel patch a week before the final release! Software testing takes time and last minute "small" changes always cause the most pain.

Glad they held off - introduce it at a later date.

Cheers,

Andrew

The problem is actually worse than that - you can't use a MMC bigger than 1GB period. No matter what geometry or partition size.

I'd bet there will be a new kernel (for the impatient) available within the week that will solve this problem.

Brad.

My god, why on earth would you want 1 GB of swap space!? :)

I don't use swap at all, and I have very few problems, usually when I have the javascript-enabled gmail open in a browser (that's why I usually use the javascript-disabled version - much lighter!).

64 MB of swap should be enough for everybody. :)

dattani98 2006-06-30 22:12

I wouldnt want to use 1GB of swap! But 128MB would be ideal. This is what I had before and my unit hardly ever crashed. I've kinda got used to that!

Besides - what's good for one person wont necessarily be good for another. Its nice to have the option to select VM according to ones needs.

You're right of course - a last minute change can (and usually does) result in more problems than it's worth.

Unfortunately anyone with a 2GB card has 2GB of memory they can't use at all. :(

The frustrating thing is that the bug/enhancement is receiving no attention from Nokia, so we don't even know what their plans are for the future. If they posted a comment along the lines of "Taking ownership, too late for initial release but will patch into a later update" then great. Instead, chuff all. Not good.

(Oh, and Opera [OS 2006 release] just died on me for no reason while browsing this site - bah!)

Yup, but does anyone remember the old rule of thumb for swap - 1.5 times the amount of memory? Just a WAG, but I'd bet you've probably never used more than half of that 128MB swap.

BTW, I think the comment about 1GB swap is a poorly worded statement on Nokia's part. The text in question reads:

"Option for extended virtual memory (RS-MMC up to 1 GB)"

I suspect this is really supposed to be two different lines of specifications, and wasn't intended to mean 1GB swap is possible - just that (a) you can have virtual memory, and (b) the 770 is limited to 1GB MMC expansion.

Don't bother. I tried it too, and it seems this is a new way to brick your 770. It's never crashed like this before (screen fades to white).

Hopefully a new toolchain will fix this.

Brad.

Yeah, but it's not just this - it's well known both outside and within Nokia that the bug-handling process is sub-optimal.

At least it's (slightly) better now than it was back in November.

For example, if anyone raised bugs on the beta: are they fixed in the release version? If so, I bet there's no movement on your bug in bugzilla :-(

Were you able to un-white screen your 770? Mine white screened while I was trying to upgrade (the linux flasher failed a few times, and when I switched to windows it failed).

Tried both the windows wizard and the linux flash (got to work), neither one worked.

ploum 2006-07-02 16:23

So, is the 0S2006 released and is there a way to flash my 770 from a Dapper box ? (no windows available)

ploum 2006-07-02 18:03

answer to myself : use flasher-2.0 (not easy to find) and it works. 2006 OS seems great. I only wish I could disable those "applications is open/close" sounds without disabling other sounds.

The network connectivity is awesome !!!

Try flasher-2.0? Holding down home while powering up. Does it give you usb icon at top right corner?

As Ari Jaaksi (head of linux Nokia 770 within Nokia) write in his blog there is really OS2006 out yet. He wrote Nokie hompages will get the version soon on there hompages. I think Nokia will make press marketing as soon it is available on their hompage

You can now download OS 2006 from the Nokia US website

So why is it still unavailable from the UK site?

Jejoma 2006-07-05 20:44

When I change a theme under 2006 the colour of the boxes changes but the background remains vivid orange. Can anyone help me change the background please (or does it have to remain that ghastly colour?)

aflegg 2006-07-06 08:44

Same as on 2005 OS: Home > Tools > Set background image...

Jejoma 2006-07-06 09:08

Thanks Andrew. I'd been all throught the instruction book and couldn't find it - plus I was convinced that when I'd changed the background under 2005 it was linked to the theme change!
