Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Was unable to play a live video stream on cnn.com. Claimed it needed the Turner Media plugin, let it get it, it downloaded the Firefox plugin and installed. Still no playback, but did get audio in one stream.
In spite of Google's claimed openness, I haven't a clue as to where to submit a bug report? EDIT: Found bug reporting under the "Control the current page" icon. Pretty neat form to fill out including option to send screenshot. |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Fast, indeed. The only site that's still dog slow in it is maemo.org :-)
I like the resizable textareas. And of course all Google stuff is like on steroids (Gmail, Calendar, Apps etc.). It's going to shine as an AJAX engine. I won't be switching until there's a decent plugin system with some basic stuff available, like an Adblock equivalent. I'm still waiting for some stuff to updated for FF3 anyway :-) |

Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Since it should be "compiling Javascript to native code", we probably will have to wait some for a linux version (or ARM for that matter) :)

Re: Google Browser: Chrome
This is almost off-topic, but after having it on my hard drive quite awhile, I am just
noticing how fast the newest version of Opera is here in Sidux, a version of Debian. Great! Now off to a computer that has Windows on it to try Chrome... |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Yes, it is faster than firefox, and cleaner looking but...
Where is the home button? - (Fixed: Keep Reading the thread) No java plugin!!! Cannot resize webpage, only text (IE7 and FF3 have this feature) info boxes (when hovering over a link) display in the bottom- very annoying AwesomeBar kicks Omnibar's a55 No plugins yet... NO LINUX But the good parts: Fast Nice tab engine Nice javascript "Create webapp" button (cool!!) Gears built in Weird Parts: scalable text input boxes (wth, why??) Underlines wrong spelling, but does not give spelling suggestions on right click... Edit: Over 90 ppl looking at this thread, lol |

Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Make webapp shortcut thing is cool I did it to itT and it opens it up with no address bar or anything so you get plenty of space for the site. Plus Give a nice desktop icon, and it uses the favicon as the icon.
Edit: here is another plus its not my default browser and it doesn't ask me everytime I open it if I would like to make it my default. |

Instead of typing in a tiny box in the middle of your big screen, you can enlarge it to better see what you're writing, word-processor-like... I use an extension in FF to the same effect. |

EDIT: Of course that doesn't stop IE8 beta 2 to offer you a brand new default browser :D |

Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Like many of you, I've been playing with Chrome and found it a really soliod first effort for Google. I use Opera 9.5 on ym home desktop and so its kinda neat running these side by side and seeing Google be ever so faster in different operations.
V8 would be great on the IT. Considering how Chrome is built, its not too far a thought see it being literally the OS for a netbook/UMPC/Internet Tablet kinda of device. Its pretty much got the web performance issues nailed down to be a non-issue (unless the site's broken that is). |

"Google Chrome requires Java version 6, update 10. Please note that this is currently a beta version and may be more unstable than some previous version of Java. To download this beta version of Java, visit http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ea.jsp" I installed it and verified OK on a few java enabled sites. |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
When I installed Chrome, it said it took all of my settings and bookmarks from Firefox. But when I went to CSPAN to watch the Republican Convention, it wouldn't play realplayer content. When I went back to Firefox, it played realplayer content just fine.
Nevertheless, I think I'll be using Chrome more than any other browser for awhile, with Firefox in second place. |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Aw, snap!
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/46230/chrome-killed-page.PNG After about half a day of use, this is the first problem I've had with chrome, but my computer really isn't that great, so I forgive chrome. I have noticed chrome becomes unresponsive at times, but overall, everything runs a lot faster than Firefox 3 |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
I'd love to see a new, ultra-fast, open-source javascript implementation! That's gonna be good for everyone. Hope to see the V8 JS VM showing up in a webkit-based tablet browser near me...
|
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Wow, this Chrome is really amazingly fast and responsive. But it seems to trade memory for speed. It looks like a memory hog to me.
But since this is a beta, I'm sure the situation will improve. |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Tim make it valid before ...
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbos...f.com/tswl.php Hum ... fast ... but it s need an adblock plugin :) EDIT : and better gmail 2 plugin :) |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Sigh. I want to try this but I'm always using Linux and I don't want to boot into my XP install just to try this out. I await the Linux version :)
|
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Got to agree, lots of promises here. For an adblock replacement, I installed privoxy and it's working great.
qwerty12, I run linux full time but keep an xp sp3 vm running all the time under vmware server, rock solid and great performance. Really hoping bits of it start falling over ff/microb soon. |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Well the portable version of Google Chrome almost works under Wine. All seems to work except the actual html rendering (interface and all shows up seemingly fine, but not without many fixme's displaying in xterm).
EDIT: For those interested, the portable version can be downloaded here. |
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Can someone provide a direct link to the actual download please? Presumably there's an .exe file to download somewhere.. I want to download it when sitting on a Linux box, and the too-smart-for-their-own-good chrome page detects that I'm using a Linux browser and just sends me to a sign-up page for a future linux version. Argh, I hate some of the web designers out there..
Anyway.. direct link anyone? |

Re: Google Browser: Chrome
Some people are claiming that the user agreement with google gives them full copyright of everything that you post on the internet using their browser. If this is true , since the browser itself is open source, could not someone just take the source code change anything that is copyrighted (im assuming the logo and such are copyrighted by google) and then release the exact same browser without that agreement?
|
Re: Google Browser: Chrome
I read that user agreement too. Very scary.
