Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

As RS-MMC cards are expensive and hard to get a 2 GB one, I used a modified SD card (the "cut open and glue to a piece of plastic"-method) instead. Please, do remember to install Fanoush's SD card kernel flash. In my case MMC was mounted read only, despite correct fstab settings, leaving all LXDE applications inoperable

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

I went for the 3-in-1 micro SD usb adapter from dealextreme. The result is pretty much stuck in the mmc slot (using tweezers is fine, though), it works well.

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Sounds interesting...
I still use my 770 all the time.
Just a few questions.

How much space does this take? A whole 2G card? That seems like alot to me. I have one tho, but I use it for MP3s and such. How much space will this leave me?

Do I understand correctly that, because of the nit-env-lxde install problem, it actually doesn't work with a GUI (lxde) currently? Or did I misread that?

Looks good. I've been keeping my 770 at OS2006 as it works well for what I do and the HE seem like a possible road to nowhere eventually. Thanx for the work!!!

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Successfully have Deblet running on my 770 with help from Stskeeps and some changes to the instructions.

I was able to follow the chain of dependencies and get nit-env-lxde installed. After removing the dummy start-stop daemon and rc.d init file it booted up fine.

I'm looking forward to getting the wifi working....

-r2

EDIT: I forgot to mention I'm using a 2 gig MMC and have 744mb free after installing deblet. I think I made the swap 240 mb or so...

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Thanx. 750M should be enough for some music files and such.
I think I'll give it a shot this weekend.

You mentioned WiFi. Is there an issue with that or just something you haven't got around to yet? Can deblet use the binary driver or is there an OSS driver yet?

Thanx,

Never mind.
Found wget here:

--update--

OK, just checked and it's a network issue getting to that server, so I'll try it later and post then.

--new update--

It's back, although I can't believe I waited for a 4 line script. :-) I could have typed that in. Oh well...

Thanx, desiv

----------------------------------------------
I am having trouble with this line:
# wget http://bsd.tspre.org/~stskeeps/start-stop-daemon (put this in /root or something)

I haven't received a response from the server yet. DNS resolution is working, but no DL. (I'm on "try: 2")
Is that site working? Alternate site?

Thanx,

desiv

p.s. What are the odds that a minute or two after I post, I get the file? :-)

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Hi!

I've just got my second 2 GB RS-MMC card (around $10 on eBay!), and I'm itching to install Deblet on my 770 (although I'll probably have to wait a bit due to a shortage of time and and excess of things to do, coupled to my suspicions that a neighbor has a 802.11n router nearby :-( ).

I have this preliminary question: Can I install it in the second partition in the MMC card? My current card has a 3 partition setup (1st FAT, 2nd OS2008HE, 3rd OS2007HE) and I'd like to use one of the pre-existent bootmenu entries to boot (and I would like to avoid having to change the already working card!).

Thanks!

Pablo B.

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Ok, having problems.
nit-env-lxde didn't install as in this thread. So I installed nit-env-basic instead.
Finished the install.

Now I can boot into a shell, but it's a 770, so no keyboard, no way to log in.

I'm trying to boot into deblet recovery (ethernet device?), but my host won't show me a usb0.
I have also tried recover as a serial device, and still no usb0 on my host machine.

I've used my standard OS and Ubuntu live.

If I plug in a USB network cable I have, I get the usb0 device, so my machine is working. But of course, the 770 would need to be configured, and I have no keyboard on the 770.

---update---
At some point, I had flashed my 770 for host mode. I just had to reflash to disable host mode.

Installing now.. Interesting issue I am having is that my root fs is coming up RO. (Well, it says rw, but it's ro and I have to mount -o remount,rw to be able to write. I think I'll try a kernel upgrade..

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Looks like I got it! (Thanx Stskeeps!)

I had two issues, but I think they were related.

I went through the install and couldn't install nit-env-lxde. So I did the nit-env-basic.
And finished the install.

Then I could boot in in console mode, but was having some problems.
/ filesystem was mounting read only and apt-gets weren't happy.

I think that was because I finsihed the install instructions, which had me restore the files from there non-dummy state to the originals, but I wasn't technically done installing yet.

Anyway, after alot of installs and errors about hal, it finally finished.
Now it's up and swap is mounted and / seems to be rw.

Had I left the dummy files in:
ch# rm /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d; mv /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d.REAL /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d

ch# rm /sbin/start-stop-daemon; mv /sbin/start-stop-daemon.REAL /sbin/start-stop-daemon
..until after I was done with the installs (instead of running those lines after I was done with the apt-get install nit-env-basic), it probably would have gone smoother.

Anyway, I have 868M free on my memory card right now.

Thanx again,

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Seems to be working for me so far. Just loaded a few of the apps that came with it, but they are running.

Q: Does anyone have wifi working on the 770?

I'm thinking there should be some module to load, but I'm a server guy (no wireless servers at my work :-) and not much debian, other than the 770. I did see the part earlier about copying files, so I copied the files from /mnt/initfs//usr/lib/hotplug/firmware to /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware and rebooted, but I knew it wouldn't be that easy. :-)

dmesg didn't seem to have anything usefull; I'll keep poking around too.

Thanx,

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Also, while I'm thinking...
Partitioning question .
I'd like both OSes to see the same data.
Would it be best to resize partitions and set up a 512M (or so) vfat?
Or try to mount the deblet root in OS2006?
Or not bother? ;-)

(or get a 4 or 8 gig card... :-O )

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Posting from deblet with Iceweasel on wifi!
It wasn't too bad.
modprobe cx3110x
edit the interfaces file in /etc/network
I don't have it quite right. I ifup wlan0 and it fails.
Then I iwconfig wlan0 essid NETGEAR
Then I dhclient wlan0 and I'm in.
But I think that's just getting familiar with the interfaces file.

Its late, bye.

Yeah, I need to compile a cx3110x for 770 with some wifi extensions, but I'll get around to it.

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

ok, just installed wifi radar and it works great.
Just had to tell it in preferences to ifup first and I can select my home net and connect.
Haven`t tried wep or wpa, but open just worked great.

Tried to install tablet-sound and that failed, but I didn`t really read the error message.
I`ll try again later.
I also had my BT keyboard working!

So far so good.

Still can't install tablet-sound.
Seems like its dying on osso-dsp-modules-rx-34 or 44.
It says the package is not available.
I'll reread the thread and see if I missed having to add a repository or something.

Stskeeps 2008-11-05 22:44

Didn't add 770 sound yet. Should be a matter of dsp tasks.

No prob. Just let me know if you need anything on a 770 done, tested, etc..
Still plenty to do to keep me having fun with this new OS.

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Just a quick update on what I've done so far on deblet on my 770.
Note: I'm not very familiar with Debian, but pretty familiar with Linux and the shell.

WiFi -
The first thing I wanted was WiFi. So I needed to get the OS to recognize the interface.
As root, I edited the file "/etc/network/interfaces" and uncommented and edited the lines:
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
up iwconfig wlan0 essid NETGEAR power 200u multicast
(Note: NETGEAR is the name of my open access point at home. It's on a separate firewalled subnet from my home machines, and I like my neighbors. :-)

This didn't totally work tho. I could do an "ifup wlan0" and it would time-out trying to get dhcp (or I'd hit ctrl-c) and it was ignoring the essid. But after I did the ifup, I could do:
iwconfig wlan0 essid NETGEAR
dhclient wlan0

and then it would work... A bit awkward, but not bad.
At some point pretty soon after getting wifi working, I did an "apt-get update".

Then I read about a package called wifi radar. So I installed that (I must have used Synaptic from the GUI because it's not in my history, but "apt-get install wifi-radar" would be faster (if it's spelled wifi-radar :-). ) and it has an option in it's preferences called "ifup" and when I enabled that, it shows me lists of access points, allowed me to connect to mine. Nice and easy.
WiFi works great.

-----

Bluetooth keyboard.

I have an iGo usb keyboard I wanted to use. So I started work on that.
First I hit ctrl and the two function keys to start my keyboard broadcasting. Then I went to the terminal as root and typed:
hidd --search
That found my keyboard and showed me the address (which is also on the bottom of the keyboard).
So I edited the file "/etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf" and added this to the bottom of the file:
device 00:11:22:33:44:55
{
name "Think Outside Keyboard";
auth enable;
encrypt enable;
}

Also, I loaded my Bluetooth Manager preferences (It's the blootooth symbol in the taskbar next to the clock), and went to the General tab and set Automatically authorize incoming requests. If you're paranoid/secure, you don't have to do this. Your call. :-)
Next I edited the file "/etc/default/bluetooth" and changed 2 lines as such:
HIDD_ENABLED=1
HIDD_OPTIONS="--connect 00:11:22:33:44:55 --master --server"

You probably only need to "/etc/init.d/bluetooth restart" to get it to kick in, but I rebooted it as I was being very mean to him with lots of other attempts at the time. :-)

Now my keyboard connects automatically when I hit a few keys.

--------------

Time...
OK, the last thing I did was fix the digital clock. It's not broken, but it was showing me UTC, not local time, and the wrong time zone and 24 hour format.
So, I went into Digital Clock Settings from the clock and changed Clock Format from "%R" to "%l:%M %p"
That got my display to 12 hour, but still the wrong timezone.
So I went to the shell and typed:
tzselect
And I went through and made my selections.
When I was done, it gave me a line to add to the end of a file called .profile in my home directory, so I did that.

I rebooted and now my clock displays local time in 12 hour format.

Nothing fancy here, but just something to possibly save someone some time (or me when I have to re-install and come back here to remember what I did. :-)

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

Q: on power managment/brightness?

I have the brightness control installed... It pulls up the window with the slider, but it never does anything with my brightness. No matter what I set it to, it's the same level.
I made sure I have the 48MHz 770 kernel that has the extensions for multiple levels of backlight.

Not sure if that's 770 specific.

Also, I have a battery monitor applet installed, but it never shows anything. I'm guessing that is because the standard applet uses ACPI, and we're not?? I poked around /proc and didn't see any power stuff in there.

It also feels like it's draining the battery faster than OS2006, but I haven't tested that yet.

Still having fun and poking around. Just listing what I've seen so far.

I also ordered an 4GB sdhc class 6 card. Not sure if I can get it to fit in the 770, the threads here authoritatively say it might be possible. :-) So I'll be playing with that soon. (It was like $10, so what the heck. :-)

I'll be working on button mapping pretty soon.

Thanx, this is more fun than any game I've ever had on any of my PDAs!!!

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

I've got a weird glitch I haven't seen before.

I added gnome-terminal so I could copy-paste.
It works, but I can't use 2 key combinations.
shift-q brings up the gnome-terminal help, and shift-p brings up a right-click menu I think.
In Edit - Keyboard Shortcuts, I've disabled all shortcuts (I didn't see them listed anywhere, but disabled to be safe) and it does the same thing.

It's not a big deal, but just weird and a pointer on where to look would be great.

It doesn't do that in xterm, so it seems like it's something in gnome-terminal.

Just kind of quirky.

I'm working on figuring out dbus. It seems that if I can find the values, there's a lot of things there (screen dimming, brightness level, power, etc), but I haven't found much documentation yet.

Is there a way to walk the dbus tree, like there is for snmp?

Or some documentation on things like org.tspre.dsme, so I can find out what the options are?

Thanx,

desiv

Stskeeps 2008-11-08 20:19

Re: Deblet on the 770, - Is there any interest?

org.tspre.dsme is done by /usr/sbin/dsme_dbus_proxy.py or something - look for *.py files there

Mer (wiki.maemo.org/Mer) is ubuntu based and has a better 770 port.

I did not find much discussion on the 770 port. I see on the web wiki the developers are looking for 770. I have not done much with my 770 since last year. It works, so I do not try to fix it.

I have an 8GB MMC card and am using Fanoush boot menu so I am willing to try to "fix" it for the better ment of others.

@Stskeeps, I interestin me on Mer. Are you one of the devels?
Currently i have more interest on upstream kernel. I found most patches was not ported upstream, so currently i made mtd/nand_omap1 compile with upstream... but there should be more work done. I need to make use of onboard com port, any one who has expirians with this on 770?

Hey stskeeps (or anyone else, for that matter). Even though Deblet has been merged with mer, i'd still like to try it out (Deblet, that is) and i was wondering if anyone could give me some step by step instructions on puting it on my N770. I'm fairly new to linux so i couldn't make much sense of some of the posts. Thanks in advance!
