Is that because you are coming to the forum less due to the style change? ;)

His ego is still bigger than mine.

But I'm taking supplements, so...

I call bogus - take out the ever helpful 'Search before you post' posts and then re-tally the top 10 posters..

That'd surely move the Rat and KJ up.

I see I got another vote. I'm sending those supplements back.

Since I've never met any of these people in person, it makes it nearly impossible for me to come to any conclusion. I judge ego by personal interaction, not by how someone comes across in a tech forum.

Dude, you win (not the poll; quite the opposite).

My wife saw the poll results a while back and laughed. "Do these people actually know you?" she asked.

"No dear," I replied (with the most humility of any human being ever), "it's the Internet."

:D

Yep, it's the Internet.

I want a T-Shirt that says:

I'm
* FAMOUS *
on
talk.maemo.org

It would be best if the stars on either side of FAMOUS were little LEDs that sparkled when I moved. FAMOUS could have chaser lights, too. That would be a nice touch.

I would wear it at whatever maemo.org function I attend next (probably the summit), but it really does need to have the sparkly LEDs.

Ok , but some things come through even on tech forums. The clear winner earned his title and even number 2 was well earned, even if neither of them got my vote.

hehe, when I ran it I thought Texrat was gonna win and GA came out of nowhere. I honestly thought, Texrat, Benson and myself would have been higher. GA just stole the show

And as I keep telling you: post count is NOT indicative of a "large ego" (there's no way Benson belongs in your list, for one. The guy is as selfless and purely-motivated as they come IMO).

Just like shoe size isn't really... well, let's not go there.

/me puts on size 9 sandals.

Exactly. I like Penguinbait.. has a GREAT sense of humor!!

This whole notion of "STFU its the internet, stupid" is illogical at best..it's simply another form of communication..would you in a phone call conference say things and then go 'wait..stop acting so serious its the TELEPHONE WIRES'... uh...no... well then, just because voice tonality is not heard, how many posts until one can agree that you can get just as much information about how one person treats other people..as with on the telephone..and again on another level in person.. if you met someone in person for 2 minutes, how many posts would have to be written before you realize you know more about them as a person from their writing than from that brief in-person interaction?

..If you can't learn one iota from this poll about yourself or how others perceive the way you treat other people, than perhaps you never will, which would be a damn shame. I don't know jack about anyone on here... EXCEPT... in one way alone: the way they treat other people on here.. Perhaps like me and other geeks, you may not actually mean what is perceived to be meant in your communications with others.. I used to have this problem.. there are ways and avenues towards solving this issue..

I'm really not trying to make you feel bad, just to help..

A book that I found invaluable on my quest for better social understanding of people's emotional needs (& my own etc) was:

Daniel Goleman "Social Intelligence"

I can't recommend that book enough, and it ha plenty of technical information from the emerging field of Neuroscience to satisfy the factual part in us.. He traces the emotional and social needs, and methods of communication throughout the different ages of a person in their development, and its a very easy read, especially for anyone intelligent such as yourself.

Also his audio interview "Better Parents, Better Spouses, Better People" with Daniel Siegel was really helpful in jumpstarting my personal path of understanding and improvement in this area. I hope it helps and I'm sorry if you feel wronged by this message in any way, it's honestly not meant like that.

Um... no.

If we're going to be this serious and analytical for a moment, then let's be intellectually honest as well.

Any communications expert will tell you that there are differing degrees of effectivity between various modes of communication, all dependent on context.

We've all seen grammatical exercises where something like an omitted (or superfluous) comma completely changes the meaning of a sentence. If one element of punctuation has this power, then just imagine the impact wrought by completely differing modes.

You simply cannot say that an sms message, for example, conveys the same context as face-to-face communication. It's impossible.

At best, the internet can approximate intimate conversation-- it can never equal it. And so, yes, it's entirely logical to impugn "the internet" as a vehicle coming up short compared to personal approaches. We as humans are highly prone to errors of judgment about each other if our exchanges are limited to virtual modes. Heck, one can know a person in "real life" for decades and still be wrong about aspects of their personality-- this is just compounded the further removed you are from true physical exposure.

That said, it is still possible to get a reasonably accurate feel for someone based on their choice of post content in certain circumstances, so if there's a consistency to the message then judgment can be close enough. But judging ego by virtue of mere post content, for example, is unreasonably shallow and inaccurate. I could list many other motivations for high post count that actually contradict a high-ego assessment, but I'll stop here. ;)

Re: Poll: Who has the biggest ego? Top 10 Posters

Some people may post because they have low self esteem, and getting praise in the form of "Thanks!" from lots of people on a forum might actually be the closest thing they've had to real fame. The rush they get from being appreciated and even celebrated on the forums pushes them to continue to be helpful, frequent posters, because that way, they get more appreciation and their self-esteem is boosted. But as with all other forms of external validation, this boost wears off quickly, so they return again to try to get another hit of appreciation.

Not that I know anyone in particular who might be following this pattern, I'm just saying that it's possible.

This gives me an idea... What if we had forums software where you recorded yourself saying the message instead of typing it out? :P

Seriously, though... that might now be a summer project of mine... It certainly would give a whole new meaning to talk.maemo.org

Re: Poll: Who has the biggest ego? Top 10 Posters

From a recent study:

Quote:

A small study in 2004 by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University, involving 30 university students who were asked to keep a communications journal for a week, found that people are more than twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails.

The participants fessed up to the researchers for the sake of the study. They lied in 14 percent of e-mails, 21 percent of instant messages, 27 percent of face-to-face interactions and 37 percent of phone calls.

Researchers generally believe that lies are related to self-esteem. We want to look good.

Telling lies and getting away with them are very different things.

My boys can lie to me in email and I might never know the difference. Lie to my face? I nail them every single time. ;)

Not that I communicate with my children over email/im often, but that is so true. I can tell every time when they lie to my face.

I'm not sure if it's a good thing, but I uncontrollably laugh when he lies, and he usually laughs with me, but he doesn't get upset. That's his confirming tell. If I accidentally laugh when he's telling the truth or being serious, he's usually not laughing or smiling.

Yeah, 5 is still in the manipulative stage. Boys usually move past that after starting school.

Teen years are the dig-in-and-defy period. We had a nice little blowup about that in the Rat household just this morning. My 2 heathens do not yet grasp the concept of Mother's Day... and apparently the wrath they subsequently incur from dad has been worth it for years.

Let's see how that plays at 18. They've been warned. :D

Yeah, it seems to be a guarantee that the teen years will be interesting. I've watched plenty of friends go through them, and though I'm thoroughly enjoying the present, I'm actually looking forward to it.

Funny thing is, at this stage, my birthday feels more like Mother's Day.

In general, I don't read much physiological psycho babble stuff, but I do think recent "late adolescent frontal lobe development" findings tell a good story. Specifically in the area of "executive" functions. Here's an NIMH link from the top of my search. What's also interesting is 40 is the average age for our last cranial suture to fuse. What could that all mean?

What I mean is they have determined that being stubborn and foolishly argumentive is somehow paying off for them... rather than picking their battles wisely and making sure they have reason and fact on their side.

I don't see any benefit for them, but surely they must, given their persistence at the Someday We Will Grind The Old Man Down game.

I figure that somewhere in their 20s a switch will click and they'll go, "oh man did we waste a lot of opportunities by keeping dad pissed off..."
