Yes and what about completely cancelled products too. There were some hints that Elephanta should have come with device and there is this mysterious Soyuz placed between Sputnik (770) and Gagarin (N800) too.

I'm still enjoying the show and looking forward to my Pandora. I also wonder which one will ship earlier to their respective owners - Beagleboard rev C, RX-51 or Pandora :-)

Yeah, I'm quite certain Elephanta was probably going to come with an OMAP3 OMAP2 device at the end of last year, but they scrapped it in favor of putting more effort into Fremantle for a more radical change.

Well in fact _you_ lost your money due to exchange rates, not them. That's how credit card payment and refund works. And as I understand it if you still order it now they will let you pay only the amount you got returned so you won't lose anything and they will bear all the loss. That's more than fair IMO.

As for failed expectations well, that's more about underestimating all risks of your investment. You can't blame anyone else for that. Well you obviously can but ...

According to their blog..

So I thought I'd tell you a story... because, yes, back in September 2008, we really thought we could release the Pandora until the end of the year!

However, there was one bad thing that happened... which caused all the mess and nearly did kill everything: In the beginning of October, right after the preorders had been paid, craigs bank froze his account (as you might know).
However, not only the money from craigs preorders was on that account, but also the money from the rest of us which was meant to develop the Pandora boards, etc.

Everything had been set: We had the complete circuits (I posted videos before September), we had the nigh complete case (we did post pictures of the FDM case) and we had fixed appointments with the company in mid October to do the first mass production testing of the boards.
However, we couldn't access the money anymore for actually STARTING the mass production - that's why it didn't happen.
Also, we couldn't pay the hinge, the prototype battery, the LCDs, the prototype of the flat ribbon cable for the LCD... and without all that, we couldn't continue to work on the case.
And without any prototype boards, the devs couldn't work on the software.

It was scary. Everything we had setup so far didn't work out - simply because of a frozen account. And this was the beginning of all those delays...
If this is true, i understand the delays. That stupid bank-problem almost destroyed the whole pandora-project...

Re: The Pandora Cluster Bleep

Its really not a timing issue that has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Pandora had sent me several emails with useless information. Then when I ask questions I am told to go read forum entries. I lost 73$ on the exchange rate, but I too blame pandora for this. If they had not refunded my money I would have a pandora on its way eventually.

My main problem is I have no way I feel comfortable reordering.

I don't have a checking account, I don't use checks.

I will NOT pay by Bank Transfer, Money Order or Cashiers Check. Why because I have no faith that I will ever get anything, and I would have no recourse to ever get my money back. If they **** me on my credit card, I can get my money back. If they still had my money I would be sitting here quietly, but they gave it back, now they want it again, but I cannot pay the way I did when I ordered it. I might as well send some cash in an envelope to Nigeria, as far as I am concerned.

This is TOTALLY PANDORA teams fault. This should have all be figured out prior to taking any money in the first place. My guess is if the only way to order was by Bank Transfer to begin with, they NEVER would have even sold the 3000 units.

Their communication is nonexistent. They have all our email addresses. I did not get something telling me to reorder, I found a webpage that says I have 7 days to order. WTF

ITS ALL A REALLY BAD JOKE.

Re: The Pandora Cluster Bleep

Yeah I can't believe they can't figure out a way to accept credit card payments. The purchasers need some kind of recourse if things go horribly wrong, as they might. Is there no way the Pandora team can work with a reputable outfit who can handle the pre-order payments? The whole money order business is just too fly-by-night. I strongly suspect they're going to have serious problems getting enough orders now. The whole project is still in jeopardy of complete collapse...

Are you working to provide a way to use credit cards. I lost 73$ on my last transaction and resulting refund. I prefer paying via a way that I can receive my money back should I never receive my goods.

Yes, we are but this may not be available for 3/4 months. Your order will be marked as a Priority and when the credit card facility is available we will contact you and you will receive Priority and repayment at the same amount you were refunded.

So much for preordering, Do you think that in 3-4 months is when they will start shipping the first batch, or the second? :D:D:D

I would be surprised if they have the first batch on the streets in 3 months at the pace things are going. Either way I suppose this is a bonus for me, as I can wait another 3 months and be that much closer to the new Nokia release date ;)

blame the credit crunch. basically, anyone is risk shy to the extreme.

I can't say I don't understand you're bailing out, the delays have been annoying, to say the least.

OTOH, I've always thought that a project like Pandora should not be approached as a standard manufacturer-customer deal. Personally, I made sure that the money I "gave" to OpenPandora was money I would never miss, so the delays are only irritating insomuch that it means I have to wait longer for my Panda.

When my reorder mail came, I simply made an international transfer and ate the bank fee. What can I say? I just want that Pandora...

I could almost be tempted to pay cash, but I'd want to see one of these things working first, otherwise the risk is too great. So yeah, give it a month or 3, or whenever they finally start shipping them, and assuming the n900 isn't out I could be persuaded to pay cash at that point.

yep, im talking the long view on this. when people start posting blog entries and photos of their devices in hand, them im game. still, the latest videos and renders really do make me want one. basically, its a pocket sized arm based computer, and one thats not under some big corps (and their marketing/experience departments) control.

Do you imagine the cost of the n900? With 3-g, fancy cameras, slick design.. It will cost well over 500 usd + will supposedly have a weaker battery.
The coming n900 will be a very nice portable device, I just think I won't be able to afford one.

just wait till they get to 215$us shipping included; that's how I got the 770 then upgraded to n800 then upgraded to n810.

I need something now. And the more you wait, the older the platform gets with time. So I ordered a pandora (hopefully from the first batch, thanks to penguinbait)

I will be waiting and ordering via credit card once this service is available. Hopefully the exchange rate stays where its at. So I cannot reorder via credit card for several months and SOMEONE WILL CONTACT ME once this service is available?

Thanks

It's the worst daily soap I've seen, but I'm still hopeful.
The light on the horizon is getting brighter, at least.
I've spent so much time to get a playable Quake 2 on my N800, bought a gamepad, soldered an adapter, fiddled with KDE. Fiddled with mouse support. But still it wasn't a nice gaming experience.

I need a Pandora, no matter how long it takes.

:D Yes, I remember that. I've had my bad days recently, too. I was nearly bailing out, because of that legendary 'get a 250€ CD'-thread. If there weren't some level-headed guys like ED, they could have *** my *** by now :) Craig has no luck with his way of "communicating"

Re: The Pandora Cluster Bleep

I've been very, very high anticipating this device but I need my money enough that I can't just give it away on a myth. I'll wait until I hear that people are getting their units, THEN I'll buy one. I'm actually glad I didn't have enough money in time to preorder.

I love what they have and the form factor is exactly what I want.. but the delays and vapor trails aren't making me feel convinced that I'm cleared for landing one of these.

Let the metaphor jokes commence! :)
