Re: Mer v0.9 released

This procedure should be done in flash boot. I just erase my old bootmenu that I use to boot my clone partition which is where I run the mer bootmenu installer.

Re: Mer v0.9 released

why don't I see Mer installing. I did the dialog parts and it ask me if i want to format a fat partition. I said no and the installer closed. What happened? I already have the partitions so I skip those settings. All I needed was to select swap and install partitions. Why did the installer stop. No rebooting, nothing.

Ok. So I got it to install using the easy setup. For some reason, it says I have two partitions for Mer, p2 and p3. I don't know why. Maybe that is from the first try.

format manually and select no formatting in installer

Wireless networking does not refreshed unless device is rebooted. The rebooting procedure itself is tricky. I thought if I pressed the power button, it would give me the option to reboot or otherwise as I've seen once but, now it just turns off the screen, sorta like locking the device.

Re: Mer v0.9 released

Ok. Here is a question I have, or two. Since I had my system clone to SD on the internal 2gb card with a 256mb swap partition, couldn't I just make an ext3 partition on the external SD card and use that same swap instead of creating a new one, making two swap partitions total? And couldn't I just used the bootmenu that I already had from cloning instead of reinstalling a new one? Since installing Mer, for now, is basically dual booting, which has been going on for a while now on the device, couldn't this option been available in the install process? Sorry if I am being annoying. Otherwise keep up the good work. Thanks

When i press the porew button in Mer, it opens a dialog that asks what to do..
lock button blanks the screen.

Yes, you can use the same swap partition for both.

No, you can only use Mer/Deblet bootmenu, other bootmenus will kill your Mer-partition, but you can add bootmenu item for your cloned maemo, so you will be able to boot your cloned maemo too.

Just add .item file to /etc/bootmenu.d/

My /etc/bootmenu.d/maemo.item looks like this:

Code:

ITEM_NAME="Maemo Diablo - External SD Card"
ITEM_ID="maemo"
ITEM_DEVICE="mmcblk1p2"
ITEM_MODULES="mbcache jbd ext3"
ITEM_FSTYPE="ext3"
ITEM_FSOPTIONS="noatime"

By creating this file, and running refresh_bootmenu.d as root, you will have a bootmenu that is able to boot Maemo from internal sc card partition 2 formatted as ext3.

That was what I thought but then, the second time I went to reboot, the screen just keep shutting off instead seeing the options to reboot or shutdown, etc.

Cool, thanks. I was just looking at the item file and I was wondering if I should create a new one or just edit to add my clone partition (mmcblk0p2) to the list. I notice that I have two item files, one from the advance fail setup and one from the simple setup. I'll delete the advance one.

Ok so, how do you guys install apps on Mer? Do the Debs work. I noticed there were about two apps in the application manager labeled mer at the ends of them. So far i haven't been able to keep a wireless connection while app manager is open, so I don't if these programs would install. And the web browser, Midori, has been crashing every time i've tried it. Any ideas what is wrong with my setup?

You can use both app manager and apt-get. Midori probably has a bug. Don't forget that mer is beta.

Has that work for you. I think my partition screwed up from the installation trials. I can't get my cloned os to boot. I did the item file as you have it here but, no go.

Using device names directly may not always work with Diablo kernel. Device names for card slots can change at boot time. It is better to use ${EXT_CARD}p2

I just realized that the easy Mer install creates the item file with the ${EXT_CARD}px line while the advance install uses the "mmcblkx" line. And the easy item file is the one that works. That need to be change in the advance install for Mer or someone tell how to get the vitual keybord to work in vi to modify it since my N810 HW keyboard does not have those brackets.

Hey thanks. You did not reply to my other question with the clone partition. Did the bootmenu item setup work for you? My cloned partition is still good. I tried it with the old bootmenu and it booted fine but, I can't get it to boot with Mer bootmenu. Now I am having a new problem where I reinstalled Mers' bootmenu and Mer itself with the item files and none of the two starts. My clonesd doesn't boot with the item file and now Mer is telling me I have an incompatible bootmenu and the device reboots.

I am trying not to go the simple setup again and end up having to reformat my sd card.

Yes, you can grab them from http://repositorry.mer.tspre.org/ but there are so many of them, you propably want to reinstall Mer to get working wlan... :)

That .item file works for me. If you are using ext2 instead of ext3 i am using, you have to change the format in the .item file. Also, i am using the second partition, if you are using something else, you have to change the p2 to whatever you use.

Thanks, I try it. My cloneos is on my internal 2gbsd card, p2. It should be the similar to yours. IDK.

I don't know what is wrong with my wlan in Mer, and I've reinstall three times already with the same effects. It connects once after boot, stays on for about a minute or so and disconnect and never gets a connection again no matter how many times I try to reconnect.

Hey, I don't know what I did but, now my power button doesn't work at all in Mer. And I really need to fix the wireless connection. I don't why really it won't stay on. I did an apt-get update and then I was doing the upgrade part in about 10% of it my connection drop and I had to reboot. I know I am gonna have to reinstall but, I hate the idea.

Mer-installer leaves the rootfs tar.gz untouched, so at least you don't need to download the rootfs again. :)

If you get your internet connection working and don't mind taking letting the install go overnight, I would highly recommend following the directions to install e17 found here: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...58&postcount=1

The reasons are explained better in the how-to, but bascially, the basic 'apt-get install e17" lacks some of the features that really make e17 ideal for the NIT. It is, however, a decent way to test out the features quickly to see if you might be interested in doing the full-featured, longer install.

Is it possible to download the files mentioned in those instructions you posted and install afterward? I don't trust my connection to last that long.

The files are downloaded fairly quickly at the beginning. Most of the install time is taken up compiling everything on-tablet.

I'll take the blame for that. I did my best to get an identical version of e17 to build as debs, and spent a solid 2 weeks making packages but never could get the keyboard to function properly with the packages in the repos. The Mer repo version of e17 also suffers from a weird glitch with colors not being displayed correctly for the background (I played around with different display enginge but never could figure this out completely). Finally, many of the shelf widgets such as the calendar and wlan monitor are in the svn repo separately from the rest and must be built into separate deb packages. I've actually found a way to build the deb and even attempted to build the package with the Mer builder, but the build failed and before I got a chance to fix the package my virtualbox image got messed up with another e17 package I was working on that the extra modules package depended on...so I ended up in a dependency hell. Then, I got frustrated that the 2 weeks of effort had yeilded so little positive results and realized that since a working method existed (albeit not as good of a method), I might as well let people use that other method for a while until debian catches up to e17 (which should happen in the next few months). After debian sends their packaging info upstream to the e17 project, packaging for Mer should be alot easier.

If anyone else would like to work on these e17 package in Mer, then I'd be more than glad to help them out. For instance, I actually found e17 package build for the openmoko which could be converted to work in Mer pretty easily. The only problem is that I lacked the time to try it at the moment.

Did you try libxkbui-dev and not lbxkui-dev?

Otherwise, if you can't find it, you might try and do the install without that package. But, I installed the packages just fine. So, check for misspellings.

I know it can be hard to type all of that in with the onscreen or hardware keyboard on the device so I'd recommend using SSH if your not already. It just makes working in the terminal a lot faster on the NIT's. I think there was some decent info on ITT about using the ssh if you do a search. But, basically, you can just type $ssh ipaddress where you replace ipaddress with your tablets actual ip address on your network. So, I typically ssh onto my tablet using my desktop and copy and paste commands into the terminal so it's a lot faster and easier.
