Recall what happened when someone on this forum tempted us to buy a Pandora. That should help you fight the temptation.

i think this is a somewhat bigger operation then the pandora ;)

and i still would like to get a pandora, but im happy to wait until they have a stockpile of them...

They're gpiokeys or something, so should be trivial to make work (they don't currently, probably some other keycode than the F-buttons).

I have received their kernel sources and a firmware maker, so, we can pretty much do what we need to do. :)

For comparison with N800:

(screen size is similar to N800. don't let the perspective fool you.)

My understanding of these things is sketchy but is this not a huge deal?

Or has Nokia made an equivalent gesture with the N8*0? And so it is normal practice to do so?

Well, what I've gotten so far is:

* Kernel source (Nokia has given out similar - see kernel-source-diablo)
* Firmware maker (as in, making an "upgrade image" - Nokia has not given out information on the FIASCO format -but- it's a matter of simply asking for it I believe)
* Descriptions on how to boot fully from SD in case the internal flash dies (Boot sector and all stuff) and utility to create this (Nokia hasn't given something similar but it is very rarely needed provided you haven't messed up NOLO and X-loader)
* Information on how to hook up a RS232 console to access bootloader directly

And I've requested bootloader sources (Qi, u-boot), and we'll see how that goes. When that is done, I can actually make a fully open source firmware for it. It's amazingily hackable.

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

Hi stskeeps, thank you for the detailed reply.

It seems from what you say that Nokia is pretty decent in making available information but that Moses is willing to be totally open.

Or as least as open as is required to produce your own firmware. Again I find this to be amazing, it hearkens back to Sharp in the early Zaurus days when we had many choices of firmware options.

I really miss all of that so this is what i have been waiting on. I suspect that continued reports of your progress here will persuade me to buy a device.

Looking forward to your next update.

stskeep,

I haven't seen anyone ask these questions and I'm burningb to know.

1) Since mer works on both devices, is it faster on the SmartQ since it has a faster processor?
2) What things don't work on the mer version of the smartQ that do work on the N8*0?
3) Given the choice of both units and now the same OS, which hardware would you buy today if they were both side by side in a store? That small form factor looks awesome next to the oversized N800.

Thanks in advance.

Nokia is working on open sourcing the flasher and at least distribution the fiasco-builder (not sure about the source status).

1) Faster-ish. Can't benchmark yet - Having a working X helps. 2) WPA2 atm 3) I would get the N800 for the speakers, Stylus and d-pad. Also, 2 sd slots and huge community surrounding it.

Yeah. I suspect it can. My kernel sources has the Q7 too so.

I know this is more of a Mer question than a Moses SmartQ* question, but ...

can Mer do the Maemo virtual thumb keyboard ... in portrait mode? On a 4" or 5" screen, that probably doesn't make much sense, but on a 7" screen, it seems like you could have the bottom half of the screen taken up by the thumb keyboard, and the top half of the screen still displaying a usable portion of the app.

Seems like if 7", 9", and 10" screens are going to be supported, that'd be a good option to cover for Mer.

Good question - we don't have a thumb keyboard yet :) I would love a thumb-ish keyboard on the smartq atm.

Mer didn't inherit the thumb keyboard from Maemo?

I'm confused, I would have assumed that was one of the pieces that would just come along for the ride, not one of the pieces that had to be re-crafted.

It's closed source in Diablo, and a source for Fremantle wont be coming out for a little while yet (or it may have been released in the beta, not sure if anybody checked for it yet).

I wonder what the deal is with the hardware acceleration, I understand that 2D/3D is not used, but the video codec acceleration was supposed to be used at least according to some of the websites.

Where can one download the various bits and bobs of source/binary tarballs/etc.?

So in theory mer will run on the smartq 7 as well as the smartq 5?

Or can one say that the smartq 7 is just a smartq 5 with a larger screen?

Hmm, I like the look of a 7" screen, but still no kb :(

Ah, I could still be tempted I reckon, but I agree, that website looks a bit dodgy :)

No reply from Samsung about registering to see what info there is about the S3C6410, anyone else managed to register and found anything useful?

Thanks, I saw that one and headed for the Samsung technical site to see if they have some technical docs on the SoC.

I may have to try re-registering and see if I can come up with a better persona for them...

Good stuff, some more info in the s3c6410x_um_rev1.10_080822.pdf file from the looks of it, many thanks.

P.S. I should add that this file is a veritable goldmine. As soon as I can get one of these devices I'll be doing some hw hacking. Many thanks for the linky :)
