hmmm, I'll go with useless, it doesn't even show the poll.

It just seems like since the site always had a dark theme default, it would make sense to include a working usable full featured dark theme available at launch, IF it were not going to be the default.

This was the very first post I looked at under the new theme. I was distracted!!! Besides, I don't fill out enough online polls to have the whole circles for a single choice, boxes for multiple choices ingrained in my brain yet (although this'll help :p).

I my mind minimalistic theme and this new theme are "crap" because they require too much vertical scrolling. Space is wasted between each message. In this thread I can see 3 messages at once in 1600x1200 screen. With old Mobile theme I could probably have seen the whole thread at once with a tablet. Both themes could be probably made better with only minor changes.

Re: POLL: do you like the talk.maemo.org theme? multi-choice

Well, I actually like the colors (I mean, black on white is the best combination for text), and, now that I know how to find the new posts, I'm fine with that.
What I don't like (as others have said) is the wasted space everywhere.
I'd get rid of the right column altogether (and relocate the menu at the top, so that I can scroll it into oblivion when I don't need it).

I agree, but this is something that can be easily tweaked, and doesn't instantly make the layout "crap". Try to stick to being constructive here and we can all come out the other end with a layout most everybody is happy with.

I used the word "crap" because penguinbait used the expression in a post which supported with thanks and I wanted to explain my view better. And my post was constructive.

I think this is just a matter of getting used to, but I don't like the disconnected or separated posts. I wish it were all connected with a slightly different even/odd color

I know when I would go to maemo.org, I would find it very difficult to use, and not intuitive at all.

So I did not often go to Maemo.org (notice capitalization for GA's benefit)

So I used that statistic to extrapolate that many more people went to ITT than went to Maemo.org. After all, If I don't go there why would anyone??

Yes, I know very scientific. Bet you 1 dollar I am right :D

Not a huge fan of the new forum design. Partially because the orange on the gray background hurts my eyes. The background color should be different or another font color besides orange. Titles are also sticking out way to much with the way things are spaced.

maemo.org doesn't (well, didn't) have a forum.

Yeah, we have the thread title "Re: POLL: do you like the talk.maemo.org theme? multi-choice" in size 20-something font between each and every message!

Yes, I have no means of resizing previously uploaded avatars. When you all get the time, please update your avatars (50x50 pixels).

I'd like Classic theme more. please give me a choice

Re: POLL: do you like the talk.maemo.org theme? multi-choice

I'm using the minimalistic theme at 80% zoom. I find it easier on the eyes and much less cluttered with useless junk (thread title between every post in large font) and it uses the whole screen instead of just 2/3 resulting in far less scrolling. I use a lesser zoom because otherwise it feels too big. Unfortunately, it is missing a lot of functionality (although this is being worked on :) ).

With the default theme, I feel like I'm looking at the front page of Maemo.org - a lot of unrelated articles, not a thread. I understand the desire to have some continuity between, the front page and the forums. It seems to me this goes a little too far. I suppose in time I would get used to the color scheme, but the layout is a lot tougher.

In the meantime, I'll continue using the minimalistic theme and sacrifice functionality.

Following the theme started in Dismantle, choice has been eliminated. If you don't like the color scheme, write a new page yourself that will take the text from this page and display it the way you want it.

Reggie is the maintainer of the talk.maemo.org theme. Andrew is the maintainer of the Minimalistic theme. Who commits to create and maintain additional themes?

Asking for choice is nice and I would do it all the time. But more choices implies more work for someone. If that someone is you, coming with mockups, theme code or a commitment I'm sure Reggie and co will look at your proposal with different eyes. You don't need to be a C or Debian expert for that.

Re: POLL: do you like the talk.maemo.org theme? multi-choice

Sorry but the orange type on the light background is not user friedly. There is not enough contrast to read easily especially on a tablet. Even on my Mavbook Pro I noticed more strain. I know a lot of work snd passion went inot this, but please implement a more user/eye friedly text color scheme. Maybe a darker backgrond, but contrast is the key.

I can try doing another theme, though no commitment before I start trying :)

Personally find standard themes must better for a forum without the unneeded eye candy.

hate this layout, its too much like wordpress for my liking.

this or mini, please allow members to have the standard or old theme back.

No offense Quim, but shouldn't that have been done prior to taking everyone for the ride?

I have no problem that the dark theme is not the default, but couldn't you have given one real option that looked like ITT. You options are useable and ugly, or nice and dark, but missing most features.

Then we hear, well if you don't like it, make one ourselves???

Re: POLL: do you like the talk.maemo.org theme? multi-choice

Most of this will be fixed with a fully functional minimalistic theme, but....

It is not an aestetic issue, the new theme looks pretty, it is...

Usability! Usability! Usability!

What is wrong here: text colors/contrast, background contrast, fixed margin widths/sidebar

When designing visual elements you must think of:
- readability / eye strain
- old people
- visually impaired people
- color impaired people
- old screens
- excess of visual information / mental load (not an issue here)

About the text
- never use light text over light backgrounds / never use dark text over dark backgrounds: unreadable, eye strain
- text must have the biggest possible contrast: readability, enable color impaired people
- use system colors or allow user choice of colors if possible, if not choose colors with great care; the site should look mostly the same in greyscale, do not differentiate elements just by chromacity : readability, distraction, color impaired people
- provide choice between dark and bright backgrounds: the screen will be placed anywhere from 100-1000 lux of illumination, screen background must not contrast too much from room background. To much background contrast causes eye strain. Old CRT screens cause flicker and eye strain with bright backgrounds
- never assume or force a font size: tiny screens / old people / visually impaired people

About layout:
- it is better not to use fixed margins or width, will conflict with font sizes or window size. For the same reason, make sidebars optional, allow text to span the whole window width.

Re: POLL: do you like the talk.maemo.org theme? multi-choice

The default grey/orange theme looks great on my N810 - fonts are readable and spacing is nice. On my desktop that translates into kind of large and chunky, but nothing that can't be tweaked with a user stylesheet, I'm sure. Personally I find it much easier to look at than the previous 'dark' theme.

Re: POLL: do you like the talk.maemo.org theme? multi-choice

I hate to sound like an ingrate, and I appreciate Reggie trying to improve the forum. I'm not wild about the layout, but I think it's already been improved, for example by removing the Subject Headings between every post.

However, I find the Orange Unbearable on my eyes, particularly the non-bold Orange, like for the URLs cited in posts (links), the names of those who clicked Thanks, and the "Quote & Reply" button.

I would really like some other color to be chosen for those.

I have campaigned elsewhere for the Minimalist theme to maintain its old white-on-black look, once I saw that andrewblack is planning to make the Minimalist theme match the colors of this new Normal theme. Please see that post of mine and give your support (if you would like to see the Minimalist theme keep its old color scheme for your own viewing, or believe that not making it orange-on-white, etc., like the new "Normal" theme, would at least be the fair thing to do as it would provide choice.)

Does anybody have a page of the old-style forum they could post as a jpeg? It might help me discern what else it is that I specifically don't like about the new one. I know I really can't stand the Orange. Maybe there is some other complimentary color that could be used, like leaving the orange e in maemo and the bold "Post Reply" button, but making the rest, I don't know, maybe dark brown? (Though I'm inclined to think that links just ought to be blue, like virtually everywhere else.)

(I'm also suspecting that I'm finding the not-very-bold plain black text on the gray background harder to read than I'd like.)
