Every project can have a kitty or a bear... real geeks' projects have real geek mascots.

Enter Opabinia regalis. This nice Cambrian sea inhabitant had not less than 5 eyes and a nice single trunk with claws.
It's the ideal mascotte, also because you can draw it as you like (she left us only its fossils, smiling :-)
BTW I was an Opabinia in my previous life :cool:

The problem with the spider idea is that, even though I love the web analogy, it couldn't be put on the maemo.org website. It would look like a halloween site. Orange, Black, Gray, and now a spider? C'mon!

For small, cute, and proudly wearing its stylus, how about a woodpecker? Readily made into a cartoon-style mascot, too.

That's a great page. You can see the % of probability of you actually liking a mascot of a free software project. Now, is there any page listing the projects not having any mascot?

(Sorry for the boring answer from a former contributor of Debian, Ubuntu and GNOME - find the common denominator of these projects). :)

First off, let me say that I am extremely disappointed that we can't use a qole as our mascot... It was going to be my suggestion :P

Also, I do like qole's raccoon modification. I think it's the best so far.

Better find out whether a stylus is included in the new devices, before you include one on the mascot.

But seriously, a mascot should never dilute the logo or the brand. People are exposed to thousands of images each day, and you can't afford to use competing versions of the same logo. So visual tricks like using the "ae" from "maemo" would just mess up the ubiquity of the logo.

A mascot should never compete with a logo. The logo must be fixed, but a mascot can be a recurring theme that can appear in many different ways. So on one web page the narwhal can be clicking on the tablet (assuming the next devices are tablets), and in the next web page it can be spearing a user of that well-known closed-source proprietary mobile operating system.

Personally I like the Qole mascot best.

In all seriousness though I'm not so sure about that raccoon... I mean yea looks kinda cute and all, but the e also kind of makes it look like we're trying just a bit too hard to cram the logo in there... maybe if there was at least the signs of a closed eye behind that e or something? It could just be me, but it kind of looks like that Raccoon got into a fight and had to wear an E eyepatch or something...

How about we have a deadline until, say, the end of the week, then vote on the best original entry that people have posted on this thread?

It wouldn't really mean anything, but those of us who want to have a Maemo mascot could use it informally, and those who don't want a mascot could just ignore it.
