I think that's generally Apple's style. They've don't announce product months and years before release. (usually)

Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
The new iPhone 3GS announced today comparision with the old iPhone 3G:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/0...e-of-the-tape/ Very interesting: Users can update the OS of the iPhone: iPhone OS 3: available worldwide June 17th, free for all iPhone customers. $9.95 for iPod Touch customers. It is free the update for iPhone and $9.95 for iPod. Nokia has to LEARN about OS upgrade (OTA). It is impossible for Nokia S60 OS to be upgraded ! For instance: S60 v3 FP1 cannot be upgraded to s60 v3 FP2. The same version of OS, just different Feature Pack and no upgrade possible! This is not normal, there are many applications running ONLY on s60 v3 FP2, so users with old Nokia hardware have no chance. This is a bit of a shame! Nokia should learn from Apple! |
Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
This is cool but Apple has 2(.5) devices to support, Nokia 50+. So not exactly the same level of effort.

Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
It's interesting to look at the chart at the top of the thread and consider the iPhone 3G costs $99 as of today.
And comparing devices in a slightly different bent - is anyone else concerned that releasing an n900 type of device on Tmobile will be a huge detriment? Sure, Nokia doesn't market to the US, but releasing a device on a carrier with such comparatively abysmal 3G coverage compared to ATT isn't going to help things. I went into BestBuy a few days after the G1 was released, and the reps appeared to be trained to warn people about Tmobile's coverage before selling it to them. All of these devices look great overall, but each with a decidedly annoying wart - N900 - Tmobile? iPhone - physical qwerty is nice, many other reasons stated in this thread Palm Pre - Can't do voice and data at the same time N97 - super duper expensive, perhaps end of the line for S60 |
Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
The new iPhone + jailbreak looks nice. Really nice. iPhone 3.0 finally brings standard features, all but Flash.
Right now, for me personally, Flash (and non jailbreak multitasking) is the only thing iPhone is missing. |

The new iPhone 3GS (v3) has VGA video at 30 fps (same as N97 and a bit low res than 800x480 of N900), has 3 MP camera with autofocus (not 3.2 MP) and a Tom Tom turn by turn GPS software. Also, as expected the RAM is 256 and a faster processor. They say the device is 2 times faster. Maybe for N900 compared to N810 it will be even more than 2 times faster. What do you think? |

Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
Arch, was that question directed at me?
Not sure what you mean by 800x480 for N900, because that is the screen size, not the video capture. iPhone has a shitty small resolution, but the OS is slick enough that it does not make much of a difference. Games See, now we know it will be difficult if not impossible to play emulators on the n900, its almost pointless. That was basically the only advantage, because no matter how hard this community works, I don't think we can make games better than the iPhone ones. Speed I think N900 will win here in overall (using) speed, but this is because of multitasking. iPhone will probably win in ease of use and app speed. Openness After using the N810, I have found this to be slightly useless. Slightly. There are a lot of cool things you can do with the tablets, like WEP cracking, USB host, etc. Its a really good "hackers" toy. However, 80% of it can be done on a iPhone, and 90% on a jailbroken iPhone. Its that 10% that really draws people however. Whatever though. I really want to see all of them first. |

Apple is one fine tuned marketing machine. Rather then risk a accidental product release on their online shop, they take down the whole page when its time to add new entries... Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
I like the open-endedness of the N900's Maemo architecture. If you want to run web-based apps, you can install a web server and php or ruby on rails or whatever you want... right on your device! The N800s have already shown me that they can run Java applets, including graphical ones, using OpenJDK and IcedTea. This is only going to get better as Sun focusses on embedded platforms (thanks for the link, Bundyo!)
Basically, if you want to write an app in your favorite programming language, there's a very very good chance you'll be able to compile it to run under Maemo 5. With Dalvik being ported to run under Ubuntu, we might even be able to just "apt-get install Dalvik" to run Android apps. All of the other competing devices are walled gardens. Very pretty gardens, but with high walls. That one over there, with the big Apple tree by the gate, notice how they frisk you before entering to make sure you don't take anything they consider dangerous inside? And that one with the Robot guard; notice how the walls are glass, so it looks nice and open, but you still can't take your own stuff inside? And that tropical garden with the big Palm tree; they make you balance on a big web as you walk. Only things that can balance on that web are allowed in. Maemo is like a meadow; sure the flowers are a bit wilder and things aren't layed out in nice, neat flowerbeds, but the meadow just keeps going and going, and there's a place for everyone. Look, over there, there's a bunch of people camped out, playing guitars by the campfire. And over there, there's a whole town built in the treetops by people who like to live up high. And there's a group over there who have built their town into the caves. All of these towns have built their own gardens, and everyone is helping to tend the flowers. (Wow, that metaphor got out of control... :) ) |

Qole, nice metaphor. Really summed it up.
However: 1) Hedge trimmers never hurt 2) The sun roof is open 3) I can't comment about WebOS yet. 4) Yes, but the Meadow has bad soil, so only the irradiated and genetically enhanced survive, not some many fresh new plants. (aka desktop ports vs from scratch products) Also, have you noticed Unix is taking over the world. The four best (IMO) mobile operating systems (Maemo, iPhone, Android, webOS) are all Unix based. All desktop and server OS aside from Windows is Unix based. Isn't anyone afraid of a single virus that will take down their servers, desktops, and phones! WOW! For games, I mean the (lack of) Dpad and smaller keyboard. Will make emulators more difficult. Not impossible. Maybe a little better than multitouch on iPhone, but... |

what i read yesterday and this morning about the new iphone even by die-hard fanbois was nothing but disappointment. - some very few pointed out that wow, now they have MMS and copy&paste, but then: weren't they told before that both things are useless on a phone? also it's hard to go "wow!" for something that's standard for everybody else. some iphone 3g users commented positively about the promised speed improvements: "i hope the text messages application will start up faster then. it takes ages now." far from "impressive", i'd say, at least for those consumers who have signed the apple hardware subscription. |

Did NOKIA loose the competition with Apple?
Today NOKIA N97 was launched in US, trough the back door like a shy and wet and frozen Finnish guy... While only the announcement of iPhone 3GS was a big, huge celebration, Nokia N97 does not have any operators at US launch, same as 5800 XM...Shame on Nokia marketing and sales team, shame on Nokia!!! Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
Can someone please explain the advantage of a SIM unlocked phone?
Ok, you pay $700 for the phone (v.s. $200) and pay the same for data and voice. What is the advantage? I realize that you CAN opt for a cheaper plan, but in the long run, the two kinda equal out (because it is subsidized) but with the locked phone you get a better plan. What is the minimum "iPhone" plan compared to the minimum plan. If it is only 15 dollars a month difference (say $30 vs $15), 24 months = $360. So a 32GB iPhone is really approximately $1020. And a n97 is $700 + $15 * 24 = $1060. So you get a (theoretically) worse plan, have to pay more upfront (or buy on credit), and what for? |

Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
For someone who is stationary and does not move much sim unlocked is probably not worth it. I on the otherhand travel to different countries a lot and so switching sim's in and out is necessary. I also used to upgrade my phone probably twice a year (less now). There is also the freedom of using the wireless telco as a dumb pipe I switch my sim in and out of devices at will and don't get any changes on my monthly bill.
Finally your calculation changes slightly for me, I have $10 a month unlimited data on my ATT contract due to the fact I am on a family plan. So thats an additional $120 savings if I buy an N97 over an iphone. Quote:

Thanks mobiledevide! That really answered my question.
But what is the minimum "family plan" for iPhone (I am guessing it is not $10). And why would anyone pay $100 to Sprint for the unlimited plan when you get unlimited data (think VoIP and Google SMS) for $10. LOL... |
Re: N900 compared to iPhone v3, Palm Pre, N97
Can anybody from Nokia comment on the fact that none of Nokia touch smartphones have carrier in USA, but all others iPhone, Samsung, HT C, LG have carriers for their touch phones?
From other posts: http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/...r-symbian.html What Does The iPhone 3G S Mean For Symbian? Neither of these phones from Nokia [N97 and 5800 XM) are available through any carrier, and are only really carried in Nokia’s 2 Flagship stores, one in Chicago and one in New York. Contrast that to the iPhone being offered in all of Apple’s retail stores, all of AT&T’s corporate stores, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy, well, there’s not much more to say. However, since Symbian has a single-digit market share in the U.S., that’s not really going to impact them much. For starters, it seems like every part of the new iPhone is available for developers, via API - how true is this of Symbian? The new iPhone 3G S has onboard video editing. Nokia’s smartphones used to have this, but it’s since been removed on newer phones - I wonder if we’ll see it appear again on future Symbian Foundation releases? With iPhone OS v3.0, you can rent any video from the iTunes store straight to your iPhone, via WiFi or 3G. Do you agree that this is the end of the line for the hopes of an increased presence in the U.S.? -------------------- I sometimes wonder if Symbian users truly realise just what the iPhone is capable of. Have they seen Firemint's, Real Racing? Do they know that the front cover The New Yorker magazine was hand painted on an iPhone? Are they aware that Wivi Band can simulate the Trombone, French Horn, Alto Saxophone plus over 10 other wind instruments with astonishing accuracy? I'm not sure that there are, or perhaps they are but consider the ability to multi-task an IM app to be more important to them... Getting back to your question. I agree, I think that the American public will choose pocket computers over smartphones, which is why I think that Symbian's days are numbered in that market. ------ Symbian, in my humble impression, is not so sttractive for software developers (an example: tom tom is coming to iphones and not to symbian), and you can't find so many new and updates apps for symbian phones like you can find for iphone os every day. Even if Nokia 5800 and Omnia HD are out, I did not noticed a noticeable increase in apps developing for symbian. the opposite. ------- Brushes for iPhone produces natural looking paintings, not only that but it also has a PC/Mac counterpart application that re-draws every last brush stroke at a much higher resolution hence making it possible to produce a 5 mega pixel magazine cover on a iPhone which only has 128mb of RAM! Add to that the fact that Brushes is around $5 and is automatically updated with new features (for free!) every couple of months and you begin to see the attraction of the iPhone. Stunning apps, for free or cheap, that keep getting better and better with every free update. Sure there is a lot of fluff in the App Store, but there is also a great deal of substance. The whole iPhone ecosystem oozes potential. [For Nokia] it's just difficult to see how it will fulfil that potential without the North American market on side. ==== end of other posts (http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/...r-symbian.html ) |

The all IP model has the telco's running scared, because once all traffic on their network is IP based including voice it will be impossible to squeeze people for overages on minutes. @Sachin007 I am on a family plan with my fiancee and her brother so we have unlimited family messaging for $30 a month and then we qualify for unlimited family web at $10 a month. I end up paying around $50 a month after taxes for about 400 minutes (which I never use) and unlimited sms and data. I also tether my laptop and N810 with Joikuspot nearly everyday and have never had any charges :D |

The same products Nokia N97 and 5800XM are not available in Canada the same like US. And the same like in USA, in Canada all the people have iPhones and some Blackberries. Nokia is rare. The ipHone is the mobile phone. USA mobile market started far more late than Europe and Asia and other parts of the world using mobile phones, so 70% of the iPhones are the first phone ever for those persons. I am wondering if Nokia strategy was not BAD because they could have launched N97 from Jan-Feb this year but they waited for ovi store (by the way, right now, in the last 2 hours store.ovi.com server is down) and they waited for Qt and other small things integration in s60. Instead, they could have launched the N97 with the OS used in 5800 XM 4-5 months ago and at that time there was a lot of potential. Now, with the release of iPhone 3G S and Palm Pre and Samsung Omnia HD, the dices are thrown. The interest for N97 is lost. Too late, and even the specifications of the RAM and Processor of N97 are much weaker than iPhone 3GS and PalmPre and OmniaHD. Too late, Nokia. |

The only thing is the 2 years gap between this and the last Maemo product N810 and the fact that the apps are incompatible because of different processor. At least if the interface will be nice, easy and user friendly. :) Why they change the processor from Samsung ARM 11 to TexasInstruments OMAP3? Samsung does not have any new processor at the same speed? |
