I want to moderate my own thread for a moment.

It's a natural consequence of polls like this to elicit venting. To an extent that's useful and in some cases an expected response to some poll questions.

But I don't want to veer too much into the "beating up Nokia" lane. We know there have been missteps. We know there have been gaps. The goal here is to move past them by gathering data, performing analysis and then contructing corrective action plans for the future.

So please keep the venting-style responses down to specific poll points or answers to my questions/comments (as GeneralAntilles did) and especially avoid too much crosstalk. So far the responses fit that criteria-- I just want to head off destructive tangents.

Other: I just want an affordable great hardware, completely supported by the mainline kernel, so that I can slap on it my favourite linux distribution.

Well then, how about an expectations roadmap from Nokia. What is it that Nokia expects from the community? :)

For instance; did Nokia expect a community developed, full featured PIM to be up and running on Diablo by now? What other apps, if any did Nokia expect to be community developed ?

I'm sure we realize that such a roadmap for an upcoming device might compromise positive aspects of a new product launch but, how long after that launch before we should expect some input from Nokia about what it needs from this community. :cool:

I wasn't too concerned with a detailed hardware roadmap - but the occasional product leak and knowledge that things aren't dead is a definite pro in stimulating the community.

Myself - I haven't been here in such a long time and there are various reasons for that:

1) life and the PhD took over...

2) I bought into Android...

3) Navman/tech/etc bailed on the long term licence I had and never updated their software...

4) Canola/Carman saw fewer and fewer "ooh that's new and lovely" updates...though I think that's mainly because they have a polished product that needs little update. :)

5) Netbooks arrived at a cost that became cheaper than the N8x0...

6) And the main one related to the above: I came to the realization that the tiny tablet was more difficult to use for the purposes I (and the community) wanted to use it for and I felt that we "as a community" failed to realise that - it isn't a computer/netbook and development ought to have moved that way:

a) This means Hildon should be "rethought". The Canola team have the right idea. Apps needed big shiny buttons and fluid screen transitions. The awkward stylus needed to be destroyed, menus ought to disappear, etc...

I started thinking - what if my N810 booted straight into a Canola type widget-based frontend. What if developers had an easy method to create the same style GUIs as Canola. In fact - how would the platform change if developers were forced into using a Canola style gui?

b) The platform's benefits are the beautifully high resolution, yet tiny screen and the Linux base.

c) As a result of the above, we need to leverage existing Linux apps but in a way that is transparent to development and usage. It really ought to be "recompile and it works" - and not by releasing an entire rootable distro (though that was lots of fun, thanks Penguinbait :)) - and when I say "works"; I mean in the "tablet Canola sense" above.



7) Back in the hey-day, my main concern was the difficulty in setting up the sdk, understanding voodoo magic like setting up DBus entries in the menus, and gaining access to the hardware. It all felt do-able; but it seemed excessively difficult.


8) I was also a little disappointed that we had (what I felt was) a crippled OMAP since I heard buzzwords like OpenGL ES and Jazelle. Little did I know that there were hard limits imposed by design.



I hope this didn't become one of those *****y "ooh this is all wrong" posts. Some of it may be constructive criticism, but I'm writing stream of conciousness at 5AM in the morning so forgive me. :)



9) Update: Nearly forgot: Some level of community camaraderie and support with setting up successful projects by leveraging talents in each community "sector". The hardware gurus should stick together, the porting gurus should stick together, the GUI and HCI gurus should stick together, the code gurus should stick together, the help-file documentation gurus should stick together, and so on.


Maemo garage entries would require an (almost) compulsory registration of "teams" from each sector in all aspects of development. If a developer was keen to do everything themselves, then he'd have to register himself in each "sector". (Think of it as the end-credits in the film.)


That way, each project participant could be granted recognition and feedback through "ratings" by the community for their talents. Future garage projects would fight over the best of the best; and other gurus within each field could see what's working well and what isn't through the rating system. This may work to up the standards of any and all apps released in garage space. :-)


Programs maintained actively this way would be the only ones to appear on the main repositories.

Hi there,

so, the explanation fo my "other" vote:

This is meant if they shoud happen to produce another tabet (RX-71 anyonre ;-) )
As stated in another post: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...766#post291766 it was really "stressing" to let Nokia have my money.

So: if they build another one, it would be nice to buy it without so much running around and with other options than creditcard for the onlinestore...

Good points, Glasswalker-- the forward and reverse logistics systems/processes for the devices are important too!

Knowing what I know now, in hindsight I would have approached the CARE organization about proper handling of returns, since that ball got dropped by the responsible parties.

This is a rather odd and "roadmap" heavy list of choices. My vote is not on the list.

Nokia should ensure that there is ready availability of high quality, well documented applications for the platform. They should utilize the open source community but not expect it to compensate for the failure of Nokia to fill in the gaps of the apps available.

As has been addressed, there was a rationale behind the "odd" list. Mainly, it tied into my proposed presentation.

Personally I think it's fairly representative and in fact the voting so far bears that out. FYI, there are 4 roadmap options due to the need to distinguish between very different scenarios.

That said, I was limited to 10 options (I could have easily gone to 12) and have no problem whatosever with how big the "Other" bucket gets. ;)

Ah..., present a list full of roadmaps, and when the roadmaps get selected, that shows roadmaps are what people want. This is what is otherwise referred to as push polling. If you had a fill in the blanks inquiry, the responses would have been quite different.

SD69, I think we are miscommunicating. What you allege is not at all what I intended or did. The selection set is NOT all roadmap related. Only 4 out of 10 options are. So I'm very confused by your hostility here...

Oh, and there IS a fill-in-the-blank Option, called Other, as I noted. It can get as deep and broad as it needs. No one should feel confined by the other 9 choices with that big bucket there.

Again, you are confusing me.

The "Other" bucket is filling up nicely I see. :D Just be sure if you select it that you offer details. I hope that doesn't come across as pushing anything... :p

I voted "other" and no roadmaps at all. I might have voted for the high-level HW roadmap, but only now I understand better what it is.

I don't find the idea of an official channel to propose ideas appealing unless there is a real feeling of a dialog with the company. It can't be just a mere suggestion box. This is a bit the feeling I have from Google, for example. You can send them ideas, but they usually behave like a little black box (or maybe white with colorful spots all over).

Now if the channel is full-duplex, then we are talking something else entirely. It's almost having a "wiki roadmap"!...

Great input and I appreciate that important expansion of the subject. I agree 100%... and while the poll item was very simple rest assured I had assumed such a thing would include your points, but it's good to spell out.
