These can be edited to any key combination you want.

But that would cripple Maemo 5 to the point where a keyboard would be necessary and limit the range of devices that can run it. Plus, you would have to slide open the keyboard, and hit two keys, which is rather awkward and a step backward for a UI that has been designed with a lot of thought.

Nice review. I would have liked to have seen more screenshots of portrait mode. Incidentally, when in portrait mode, does anyone know which side is the top? For example, in portrait mode, does the keyboard open to the left of the screen or to the right?

I think that might be the new LED indicator which is hinted at in one of the control panel images.

Yes, I was just thinking on that.

I've somehow come to accept Eldar's predicted September 2nd announcement date as a given, and I shouldn't. Besides, even if that is the announcement date, it does not mean that the release will immediately follow, as it has done with previous Maemo devices. Eldar himself states that the release will be late this year, so trusting him for the announcement date, but not the release date, makes the least sense of all. I've become too eager.

With all those pictures, the guy could have at least posted a screenshot of the browser's "About" page.

i would say open to the left, because then the earspeaker is on top...

The reason why I'm accepting his predicted September 2nd date is because it's the first day of Nokia World 2009 and as far as I know, that's where most of their new hardware is announced. It seems like it would be the perfect place to launch their latest and greatest... but yeah, I don't generally believe random Russian blogs. ;)

Let's face it.. this whole screenshot-fest is preaching to the choir for most of us.

What I'm interested in is seeing how many of you were on the fence or weren't going to get it before and now, after seeing the screenshots, changed your minds. Or even people that were planning to, but saw something they didn't like and now won't.

Anyone?

True, which is why I thought it was a stupid aesthetic move. But in looking at the pictures I see a top button that looks like it could be a sleeker modified version of the _ fullscreen + key arrangement of the n800 top keys. but maybe it's not as it isn't clearly labeled with +_

I was sceptical and planned to skip this one but now I would buy it - if not the price.

BTW - apparently portrait mode is working only for phone mode and some apps like gallery. It is not universal.
Note from eldar himself.

Note from myself: according to this review and todays teasing he has device for some time, there could be changes in meantime. I hope for better :)

edit: forgot happy OS cloning ;-)

Eldar told that you're free to install apps into 32gb part. That's just something like "system" partition.

Looks nice. I'm surprised the top-right X button to close an app doesn't look very finger friendly, though.

Ditto... I'm still not impressed. Also.. WTH is it with the SIDE speakers lately (N810)? I still really prefer the N800's DPAD and speakers on the face. Screw the ipod flush face of uselessness.

hmm, so how easy will this thing be to "jailbreak"?

and it seems on have to pop the cover to get at the micro-sd...

oh, and whats that area next to the camera button? black square thing...

and finally, the UI looks like canola had a bastard child with hildon (not surprising me at least given how many fans there seems to be about canola, given the latest gsoc projects, it may well replace hildon desktop even on diablo). Still, that app switcher looked nice ;) (kinda like the frequently used pages of the chrome homepage)

Two questions:

1. Is this thick? Kind of looks like it.

2. Will it be available without phone features/contract?

Maybe what he meant to say is that we are assuming that they are zoom buttons. I can't clearly make out the "+" or "-" either. Or maybe they are volume +/- buttons.

My 5800 sounds best when placed on a desk. I think it's possible that the side speakers are designed to reflect off a more solid surface. The quality is amazing compared to my previous phone. (Or then it's just a lucky side effect)

I'm not sure that it looks any thicker than the N810s, no?

As for the availability without phone features and contract--that's the main point (#1) for me. I do NOT want to pay this obviously inflated price to suffer with a piece of radio I do not want to use or be stuck with a contract to a service provider I do not like or want.

It's a Nokia, so YES. When will you Americans start demanding proper SIM cards? Things won't change until you stop paying for the jailed devices in the first place.

It's not inflated. It matches the cost of other similar devices, and is much better than all of them. Don't compare it to the old Maemo devices, which are much older.

interesting how it stacks all the wireless tray icons in a 2x2 area, i am guessing that the two way transmission icon is the phone radio, and that there will be a gps icon along with them when its active.

I was talking about just the zoom button, which could operate like an n800 but not be separate buttons, as this one seemed sort of long to just be zooms. so press one side or the other gets zooming, press in the middle get fullscreen. It seems stupid since there is room for a small fullscreen button on the top, not to have it there.
