I'd seconded this... would be very interested in HWR... I already use Xournal for shopping lists

I think nokia should provide this, they already have the software in other devices.

Ya, I recently got my wife a N97 and it has that app built-in which works pretty good as well.

Hand Writing Recognisition

Will there be any app for hand writing recognisition on N900 even virtual and qwerty keyboards are available,
This will be most useful while in case using the device only with one hand.

I just used the handwriting on a friends 5800 and it was AWESOME. But now I'm reading N900 doesn't have it!? Is that still the case? There hasn't been some magical firmware update that has brought us handwriting?

Still not the case. Oddly the n800/n810 did have handwriting recognition. One of the features dropped I guess.

What the heck!!! Is there any hope that Nokia will implement this? Or any petition or proposal to integrate this?

Re: [Maemo 5] HWR / Handwriting Recognition Possible?

This is soooooooooooooooooooo unfortunate!!! I love Maemo 5 but I cannot live without the handwriting recognition feature!

I am going to wait before Back to School 2010 for this feature. If I don't see it, I will have to sell this extremely nice yet useless for me (only due to lack of HWR) device : ( and switch to a Windows phone : ( because at least Windows was amazing at recognizing different types of inputs... WoW do I miss that?

I enjoy writing a lot not typing... I cannot type three pages of my thoughts on the tiny keypad but I can certainly hand write three pages on the screen!

I wish I was a developer though... This would have been the first thing I would have worked on!

Has anyone tried CellWriter??? Please post your comments if you have tried this software!! I am going to try and install it on my N900 right now and post. I really hope it works well!

You can get it to recognise the latin alphabet, numbers and punctuation marks, but it's very inaccurate.

EDIT: With the latest version of penpower, 1.0.0.-2010072302, the recognition for non-Chinese characters seems to have improved.

Re: [Maemo 5] HWR / Handwriting Recognition Possible?

I am using Palm's handwriting Recognition in nitdroid, interchanges with Google voice search also on nitdroid. I wish both of these can be on maemo, especially voice search, it is really fun to use. In terms of speed, the higher is faster, if hardware keyboard is 100, palm's HWR is about 160 and Google voice search is like 300! Just imagine "mississippi queen lyrics" key in each letter by letter vs voice.
