The bastards from Telus, Bell and Rogers are just doing their jobs trying to protect their profits.

Now, if the CTRC, protector of Canada, caves to their demands, I will be furious.

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

Just a small update - it's being reported today that Bell and Telus will be switching on their GSM/HSPA networks in November. The network speed is said to be 21Mb/s, which is nice to see. No info about pricing or frequencies (c'mon, 1700), but coverage is said to reach "93 percent of Canadians in almost 20,000 cities and towns". See the Globe and Mail link below for more details. And while the article is about the iPhone coming to Bell/Telus, they specifically mention Nokia N-Series phones as being an option. Interesting times...

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe...rticle1312692/

http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2009/1...s-network.html

And even better news, the Canadian $ just keeps climbing against the USD, Euro, and Pound, so the N900 is already getting cheaper for us. :)

Yes, and they both signed up for iphones...

http://www.bce.ca/en/news/releases/b.../06/75222.html
http://about.telus.com/cgi-bin/media...id=1135&mode=2

On availability and cost, btw:
expansys has N900 for CAD$759 incl too http://www.expansys.ca/d.aspx?i=187417 - 'preorder' but the other N900 page (http://www.expansys.ca/d.aspx?i=186949) says expected 29th Oct but costs more...

R-R 2009-10-06 17:28

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

Actually ordering from the expansys-usa is going to be cheaper than ordering from their canadian web site... but while you can do that it seems to be even cheaper at MobileCityOnline (and they ship here for 25$)

I know that when you buy things from the US there is usually (although not always, I haven't figured it out completely) a customs duty to be paid on delivery (plus the @#$! "brokerage fees").

Depending on that buying south might not be all that cheap. Do you guys know better about that?

I'm in Edmonton, and I am considering very seriously to upgrade my N770 to a N900. :)

Thanks!

If you order with USPS (the Canada Post equivalent) you'll get it closer to your place and at worst pay your taxes...
But at all cost, if you can, don't ever use UPS, from the US they charge insane fees!

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

You have to ship EXPEDITED to avoid brokerage fees.

Expedited means that the shipper fills out the form for Customs that states the correct code for the item in the package so the proper duty is applied (for example 5% GST, or nothing depending on the item).

Without the paperwork done ahead of time, someone at the border does this for you (a broker) and you get to pay a nice happy service fee for their trouble. Chances are they'll put the wrong customs code on the item anyway.

You may pay a little more for expedited shipping up front (because they're filling out paperwork for you), but the item will spend a lot less time at the border and you avoid brokerage surprises.

The strange thing is that at most i always paid the due tax with Canada Post, at the receiving desk, near my home... Never had any other fees.

While on the other hand, I've had 80$ charges asked for a 100$ item with UPS ! And a lot of people i know too, they are known to be the worst.

Public services ftw! ;)

I saw the news of Bell/Telus switching on the new GSM system, and I immediately thought of the n900. Hopefully they have the data frequencies for the n900.

Hopefully not only for roaming charges they can collect in Vancouver during the Olympics!

I want to preorder now, but I don't know what I should do. Expansys is just ridiculously over priced... I need a solution to this!

Hey joshua, you can actually buy the n900 here:
http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wire...roductid=25125
or
http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-N900-Unl...usposttoday-20

I am actually going to, not sure but i believe it will work with Fido/Rogers, in Vancouver

Amazon doesn't ship to canada though I tried it *sigh.

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

I expect the border fees to anything shipped from the US to be too high, if using UPS or FedEX. It's that elusive 'brokerage' fee that gets you in the end!

Use this utility to get a good estimate of "the final cost" if shipping from the US:
http://www.thefinalcost.com/

I'm thinking that the best bet may be to take a trip across the border and pick'r up. Buffalo isn't too far out of Toronto, and it'd be both faster and cheaper than buying through an e-tailer. You may want to call ahead though as it would be a bummer to take a trip only to find that they're sold out!

Of course, it is bound to be available from somewhere in Ontario sooner or later....

Yea I was thinking about this, anybody know of anystores that will carry it at a decent price? And by decent i mean under 600 (i.e. buy.com / Amazon.com / MobileCityOnline)

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

Well, finally got an (2) answer from MobileCityOnline...

They ship using FedEx and won't apparently ship with USPS.
Maybe if those who have ordered keep asking for USPS we can get them to move their a.. !

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

I'm sure best-buy or some other large retailer will carry it eventually....

It looks like we're left in the cold for the time being! ;)

Rogers carrying the N900?

Hmm, that's going to be a fiasco. 2.5 G EDGE is going to make the device look poky and slow compared to the 3G iPhones.

I hope that Wind picks it up as their flagship, instead.

By the way, qole, since you and I both live in vancouver, we established in IRC the other day that I'm going to track you down and steal your n900..

Only kidding.

But I will if you don't help me figure out how to get one at a reasonable price :P

Get your karma up, so you can get in on the developer discount program!

Other than that, we'll just have to keep our eyes peeled for deals on places that ship to Canada.

Awesome! How do I get my karma up?

Edit: nevermind, I found the karma wiki page! Sadly, apple's bootstrapped copy-paste has failed me. Sigh.

It seems to me like mere speculation unless they do release the n900 that would support roger's 3G. And saying roger is the only GSM provider is going to be incorrect when WIND and DAVE comes online.

joshua.maverick 2009-10-15 02:05

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

That article seems pretty vague, its the only gsm carrier, so the must be getting it. lol

Capt'n Corrupt 2009-10-15 02:15

It does seem vague, but consider that Rogers carries quite a few Nokia devices already including the recent 5800.

There is one good news, CAD is probably getting to parity with the USD by the time our credit cards get charged! ;-)

Yeah but will Nokia release another n900 that supports rogers 3g network?

Capt'n Corrupt 2009-10-15 07:37

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

I seriously doubt that it will, but Rogers sells phones flat out (afaik), so we may be able to buy one from one of their many retail stores.

In the interest of acquiring a phone, this is promising. For the time being, it seems as this is going to be one of the only Canadian carriers to support it as well.

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

Here's a thought; lots of companies bought AWS/1700 spectrum during the big auction, even Rogers, Telus, and Bell. So will they all be launching 1700MHz networks? If not, why did they buy? Could it be that we'll have a selection of SEVERAL networks on 1700??? And they'll all be GSM/HSPA, from the looks of things...

qole 2009-10-15 19:48

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

That would be nice, to have choice like that. But maybe the big players bought spectrum to keep it out of the hands of the competition?

joshua.maverick 2009-10-15 19:50

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)

That's what I think too, Wind, my life is in your hands. I have to pay 160 to cancel my damned rogers crap-tastic plan.

Yeah, but since Wind got "delayed" (Killed?) by the CRTC, at least we may be able to deal with Videotron's 3G (AWS) in Montreal sooner than the rest of Canada (Hopefully, though Vidéotron are a bunch of ... I'll let you guess what :P )
