Printing is better -- and shouldn't be too difficult. Just be sure to have a hundred blank ones printed as well.

Agreed. :)

Last time we had some empty space to fill in the most relevant information. There was a hand-written text "Mauku" in my badge last year.

I do still like the idea of leaving white space for hand-written or drawn elements.

I'll work up something newer tonight and post it.

I'm going to go with what makes the most sense at this point:

1. Produce a generic design that allows room for name and other details to be provided via secondary printing with data merge.

2. Provide a master template indicating locations and types of data fields (thanks Tim).

Also, going this route means it's better for you to arrange printing. However, I wil try to run off generics and bring them with me as backups. I'm arriving a day early if you want to meet up sometime for handoff.

Why print blanks? Nokia should foot this expense.

qgil, before you send out that email, there is one thing that might have to be fixed (or else i hope someone could explain to me how to perform the task correctly). i have already tried to update information at the above mentioned location, but the changes only last for a short while and then reverts back. more specifically, i have mutiple times tried to add my last name, but it always reverts back to the previous state.

Ok, I'm working on round 2, and have a dilemma-- no way is that schedule fitting on the paper as-is.

So I propose trimming the details down to just times and events, and leaving out names, roles, etc... just for badge purposes. Complaints?

timsamoff 2009-09-30 00:56

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

I think that's a perfect idea. If people want more info, they can go to the wiki (we are going to be wired after all -- and that's how we did it last year).

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Texrat, I have just sent the graphics to you. Hoperully you get them in good shape as I'm only able to forward them to you right now.

If you have problems putting all the schedule in one page maybe we could sacrifice the half page with the map?

timsamoff 2009-09-30 03:09

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

I'd rather have a quick look at the schedule rather than a map.

Texrat 2009-09-30 03:12

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Got the graphics, thanks. And I might be able to make the schedule work. If push comes to shove, I would rather scrap the 2-sided badge and not replace one side with the sticker graphic again but rather with whatever is more important.

I will have something to show by tomorrow evening my time.

Maybe you have a cache problem? Or maybe you don't complete the second step for "Publish"?

I just edited the country field in my profile from Finland to Salmiakkiland and the change was immediately visible in my profile page and in the Summit registrations list.

Can other users without admin permissions try again? Just to make sure that this is not an odd permissions problem. Thanks!

Texrat 2009-09-30 03:57

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

I recently updated mine and had no issues. That was before any Council-based rights.

Oh, and I can make the entire schedule fit on back using 7 point text.

i tried performing the task in firefox 3.5 private mode and the effects were the same: i edit the name, as well as completing the second step ('publish') and the name changes accordingly (even at the summit participation list), as it has done previously. but after awhile it reverts back, as it has now.

if this issue is more appropriate to discuss elsewhere, i'd be happy to receive a pointer.

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Alright, I have something to show for the front. Quim requested the badge be "flippable" so I've swapped the decal graphic for another badge image. However, there are slight differences between the two so I'm looking for preference: top, bottom or neither.

Note that the member name, real name and join date would not be on the graphic I would actually be producing.

All fonts not specific to logos or event site text are Nokia family fonts (Nokia large, Nokia Sans and Nokia Sans Wide).

http://www.cynicalsigns.com/images/Badge1-master2.png

I am still working on the back schedule.

qgil 2009-10-01 03:30

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Thanks! Quick feedback.

As said the plastic pockets are portrait and your proposal is landscape!

maemo.org logo without org is a no-go. Why not sticking to the Summit logo being used in shirts and all the event signaling? I will post samples once I get to the office.

- Margins should be better white since it's difficult to guarantee perfect folding.

qgil 2009-10-01 03:40

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

It's also time to decide the fields.

I like the current deisgn of nickname and real name.

I think employer andprimary project should go there as well. If someone doesn't want to specify they can simply leave the field empty in their profile.

About the "Member since..." sounds quite elitist in such context. The Summit is a great opportunity to make newcomers feel like first class contributors! Also, the Summit is not only a maemo.org membership gathering.

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

I like the one with the WesterGasFabriek logo. Possibly think of something like this:

Code:

maemo.org        X X X

 USERNAME
 Real Name
 Company/Project

  WesterGasFabriek

"X X X" indicates the Maemo Summit/Amsterdam logo.

Of course, I don't mean to direct your work. It's looking good so far. Just a suggestion.

Thank!
Tim

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

No problem, Tim, and thanks. Sorry Quim for overlooking the portrait requirement! Easily fixed though.

Also the margins are white so...??? EDIT: do you mean the middle of the map? If need be I can break it in half and have a thin white space between the halves.

Anyway, here's the back:

http://www.cynicalsigns.com/images/Badge2-master2.png

I'll get to work on the requests...

qgil 2009-10-01 04:17

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Yes, now I see the margins are indeed white. Sorry!

Correction to the password: maemo2009 (all with low case letters)

The merchandising and other graphics can be found at http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_Summit_2...g_and_printing

See http://wiki.maemo.org/Image:MaemoLoc...0x180cmAll.pdf for the signalling

I have also uploaded the maps we have from WesterGasFabriek:

http://wiki.maemo.org/Image:WGkaart.300dpi.jpg my prefer since it's a bit clearer and includes bus stops plus some other little details e.g. more icons for restaurants.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Image:Wgfplgr_schema.jpg - not as nice as the blue ones but very clear concentrating on the area where the Summit happens.

Texrat 2009-10-01 04:24

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Thanks Quim. I got all those maps from your email; I'll switch to the one you prefer (I like it too).

As for the password, I changed the case, but it looks like Publisher put it back to capital M and I missed it. I have convinced Publisher I know what I'm doing :D

I can't seem to find the "X X X" logo by itself. I also don't know if the one on the tee shirt will be readable on the badge...

Any comments on the back image as well?

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

http://www.cynicalsigns.com/images/Badge2-master2.png

Cool! You made everything fit.

- Is the background intentional? I think simply white is better for readability.

- Why all these underlined words? Better remove them to have the page cleaner.

- The Time column can be formatted putting only the starting time and saving precious horizontal width for the rest of columns. There are many words hyphenated currently and perhaps this helps.

- At least on Friday and Sunday hyphenated words could be avoided just by making them jump to a new line. There is enough vertical space for that.

Friday:

- "Expert streams" line can be deleted.

- Track chairs can be deleted.

- "Mikko Levonmaa, Ixonos" can be deleted.

- "Maemo Party" is the only item in bold, perhaps not necessary.

- "coordinated by Jussi Makinen" can be deleted.

Saturday: the lightning talsk better without bullets, just like on Sunday.

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

The fact that the badges are portrait is another little irony here.

(I guess it would be too snarky to have landscape badges in the portrait pouches? ;) )

Texrat, could you make sure that "qole" is lower case? Probably will be upper case everywhere else, but hey, if I can fix it here...

Mmm... looks the same as your previous one?

Texrat 2009-10-01 04:42

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Quim, thanks for the detailed feedback.

-the background is a watermark of the event site and logo. As a designer I like watermarks because they add depth and interest, but I'm not religious about this one. ;)

-I am cleaning up text issues like underlines. I think those may have been hyperlinks. I just wanted to get that up for review; thanks for catching those though.

-I will incorporate your other suggestions. I will do what I can with hyphenation but no guarantee they can all be eliminated.

Qole: I have no control over capitalization of metadata, sorry. Items will appear as they do in your profile.

Oh, also... If you need to make the "XXX" black in order to go on the gray background without being in a black box, that should be fine... At least, it's fine by me. ;)

Let me know if you need me to do it for you.

BoF = 770

It would be great to add these references in the map. For instance, have a "N900" label on the map with an arrow pointing to the Transformatorhuis building. The same "N900" label could be pasted in the "Locaties voor..." table next to the "Transformatorhuis" text string.
  • "N900" should point to 2 - Transformatorhuis
  • "N810" should point to 6 - Machinegebouw
  • "N800" should also point to 6 - Machinegebouw
  • "770" should point to 7 - Oostelijk Meterhuis
  • "Community" should point to... Zuiveringshal Oost, which is not signaled in the map. ;) You can point to the building in front of 770 & N800. The map mentions "Zuiveringshal West" but the Community room is in the East side of the building.
