Keep your pre-order...T-Mobile will probably do something to 'dumb' the phone down or something. Plus do you really want to wait till Jan to get it? Especially when we will have ours by then and remind you everyday just how epicpwnsauce it is? :p:D

hmm, I just switched over to T-mobile and got three lines unlimited for 200 a month, will the new rates apply to existing customers?

Interesting, that's surprising considering current voice+data plan for TMobile is at least $55 for unlimited data + 300 min no Fav 5). So are they planning on not subsidizng it for that price?

I doubt it... I also doubt they will subsidize the phone. As the good Doctor was 'splain'n today at the Maemo Summit (or at least my interpretation of his remarks), Open Source is all about services.

Nokia did their part in providing the hardware that can only run at full tilt on T-Mo's network in North America. It sounds like T-Mo is doing their part in providing an all you can eat plan on that network for $50 a month.

Get the plan and get the best possible phone. Consume the hell out of the services. :)

Can a 3G iPhone use this plan?
I don't thin' so...

How much does it cost for a 3G iPhone data plan?
Now subtract $50 and multiply the difference by 24 (two year AT&T contract)...

My employer provides my service on a completely different network so the N900 was not for me...
However, If this $50 plan from T-Mo turns out to be true... My wife will jump ship from her provider and we will have a N900 in the house, woot woot.

Can you smell what Nokia's got cooking for the North American Market?

Thought it may be something along this line. Was thinking about switching family over to Page Plus and keeping a line for me with Tmobile for the N900, but with this will stay with Tmobile.

The nice thing is, since they still have the flex pay aka pre-paid which have the exact same stat's as regular contracted plans, hopefully if it is a unlimited minute and date plan, it'll also apply to flex-pay

because services alows them to honor the letter of the licence, but maybe not the spirit...

Hmm so then I wonder if it's possible to just buy the n900 from any other place and then get this TMobile 'n900' plan if so?

spinnukur 2009-10-10 01:11

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

If T-Mobile doesn't subsidize it, and indeed the N900 is part of this 'Project Black' which is suppose to take place either this Sunday or next, then I will definitely be their this coming Sunday to buy my phone from them ( as long as the price is like Nokia's, which I doubt it will be but one can only hope )

liveslow 2009-10-10 01:12

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

Why wouldn't an iPhone be able to use this plan? I know a lot of unlocked iPhones using Tmobile already, and isn't ATT about to lose their exclusive rights to it anyway?

I think this would (if true) be a bigger game changer for Tmobile than Nokia. Now, if they had come out with this n900 + 50 all you can eat plan earlier in the iPhone's life they could have seriously put a dent in the market.

Laughing Man 2009-10-10 01:17

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

For the same reason why AT&T is having trouble and is thinking about implementing data caps on the heavy data iPhone users. Honestly I think people should stop with the "unlimited" and just give you a hard limit of say 10 GBs a month.

liveslow 2009-10-10 01:44

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

So what will be the difference between an iPhone and N900 in terms of data usage? The habits of who they think the generalized users will be?

Laughing Man 2009-10-10 01:45

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

If the n900 users overload the network I can imagine they'll start implementing the same caps they are now.

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

most of the articles have said specifically that this project is not going to be a device launch or a promotional plan, so I don't know what else it could be except either 4g or some other fundamental shift in cell service price structure

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

Something like n900 is downright scary for the operators. It can suck (or generate) immense amount of disruptive network traffic that their system was not designed for on stuffs like p2p, high res video broadcasts, mobile content hosting, etc.

I don't think it's realistic to expect truly unlimited data for <$50/month on cellular network..

Laughing Man 2009-10-10 04:31

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

Oh don't worry it's "unlimited". Really, I don't understand why they just tell people what they're selling. Sure unlimited sounds nice but in reality your cap is going be around 10 GB a month if they're nice. Probably even less. If it's an advertising thing then you could always advertise "unlike other companies we don't lie to you about what we offer, don't believe us? Try to see how much data you can use before another company cuts you off, go ahead. See how "unlimited" it is".

I just read all the little, fine details that are on contract/user agreement that you sign when first going with T-Mobile, with the unlimited smartphone data plan, the network usage cap is 20GB a month which in my opinion is more than enough for me.

21mb HSDPA nation wide in 2010.

Was it only me that saw Tmob doing this, it seemed the only play available to crack the US market.

(now wheres that smug button...) :p

The T-Mobile claim is that the announcement is a "game changer". The "game" is that T-Mobile is #4 in subscribers, with the smallest 3G network. Going 4G is not going to attract a significant number of subscribers when most don't even have a 3G capable smartphone. Only a pricing plan radically low enough to attract a significant new set of subscribers could do that.

That new plan would have to be cheap enough to (a) make it worthwhile for subscribers locked-in to other carriers to pay a cancellation penalty to move to T-Mobile, and (b) attract prepaid subscribers from other networks.

We'll see. I'm skeptical that T-Mob will do it, but I'd love to see a price war in the US wireless market.

I think it might indeed be a lower priced plan, AT&T just announced the other day http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=4968

Maybe they got wind of what T-Mobile is really up to, because their cheapest plan was $69.99 for only 650 minutes. We'll see either this Sunday or next, what exactly it is.

I hope you are right that part of the "game changing strategy" from T-Mobile is this $50 unlimited voice, 3g data and text plan.

That will kick AT&T's butt, even with this new lower price GoPhone plan (which does not include 2g data or 3g data from what I saw at your link).

And it would be great to also find out that T-Mobile is ready to leap frog the other providers with a 4g network.

Add in the N900 and it could not get any better. Let's hope it becomes reality.

Not that this matters...I was watching this video here and at 58 seconds you can see it says T Mobile on the screen
It pops up a lot in the video, so my thought is it will be soon

That's because the phone will only work with T-Mobile's 3G network, so it would be logical to have a T-Mobile sim card in the phone at this event to show off it's 3G capability.

No, I'll keep my pre-order with Amazon for the unlocked N900, no doubt they will do something to the phone, they always do!

Re: Big announcement coming soon from T-Mobile ; Project Black to shake things up?

They didn't do anything to the G1, did they? I got mine through a different source than officially through T-mo, but from what I could see, the Fav 5 and hotspot locator apps were optional downloads. Was it different for those who bought their G1's straight from them? Besides, even if they did, couldn't you just reflash it?

I'm not canceling my preorder anyway - I don't want to wait that long for my N900. Actually, I'm hoping they don't subsidize the phone because I don't want to give up my non-smartphone data plan... I'm paying $78 a month *after* taxes for unlimited voice, data, and texting. Not looking forward to a more expensive data and text bundle which is inevitable if they pick up the phone.

I've learned not to trust BoyGenius too much, but I'm guessing this could be fairly accurate. My brother-in-law is a supervisor for cellphone tower construction. He's not working for T-Mo but being in the business you see/hear stuff, and he says T-Mo is building 3G like crazy. And here in KC it seems like every week I have 3G in another place I didn't before.

And a $50-for-everything plan sounds niiiiice...but I'm still glad I ordered an unlocked N900.

Here's what I find interesting, if Project Black gets released tomorrow and they do indeed have the N900 that means they already have it, and also means we should start getting our phones by Tuesday. For $50 unlimited data, sms, mms, voice, OMG, I'll certainly go from pre-paid to contract if it's necessary, but hopefully they'll have that in flexpay because I hate having contracts.

sitting at the bar half lit, but in my mind t mobile will shake it up with at least an attempt at restructuring the price structure for mobile in the us.

With DT and nokia on their side I think they will push lower for unlocked, no contracts, free icoming a la europe.

I doubt they'll subsidize the n900 for that if they're offering the $50 a month plan. that's alot of money to lose just to boost out of 4th place on both the hardware and plans.

Not sure, but they seem to be more open about people messing around on the G1. And it's not that hard to re-flash it either so the only thing you might get stuck with is physical branding (ugh). But on the sidekicks since TMobile controls the servers so tightly for sidekicks they can repush their firmware and all.

Well ofc they're lying it's called NDA ( Non-Disclosure Agreements ), and the fact that the upper echelon of T-Mobile made them sign not one but two NDA's.
