The (ignorant and offensive) remarks made in this thread posed some questions in my mind about the meaning of being a part of this community and if there's any (unwritten) code of conducts that people need to observe somehow..

When I find someone extremely offensive (you know who you are), I go to "Control Panel", "Edit Ignore List", type in the member's name, then hit "okay".

[omitted]

I skipped to the end and posted before I read the prior posts. I then read the thread, and I learned two things:

1. Hogwash is in fact a jerk (but I'm not ignoring him yet)
2. ysss is in fact a weenie (but I knew that already)

It's not like Tex to post something that isn't supposed to be funny.

I blame him for all of this.

:(

This kid's parents should be jailed.

(I edited my last post after soaking in all of the info)

This thread should be deleted.

The parents called a local tv station before 911... nuff said.

I enjoy dark humor too... but in the abstract, not when it references a 6 year old child.

I find some remarks here sickening.

I would agree that his parents are not the most normal people in the world. The balloon was there because the boy's father chases storms because a tornado ripped a roof off his house several years ago. According to one of the articles, he's got some theory he's trying to prove. The box the boy got into was made to carry instruments.

Still, it doesn't warrant jail. Six year olds can do dangerous things because they don't recognize the danger. You can try and teach them but even if they listen and even if they understand and even if they decide you're right you might miss something.

I told my kids about the danger of running into the street but I don't recall telling either of my kids that they shouldn't take the car keys and try to drive the car. I told them not to stick anything in the electrical socket but I don't recall telling them not to unscrew the cover to the socket. I told them not to play in refrigerators that were waiting for trash pickup but I don't recall telling them not to get in the oven.

Anyone's six year old can find something to do that will kill them. Fortunately most don't. Jailing the parents of those that do is not the answer.

@DaveP1

It is unreasonable to expect parents to watch their children 100% of the time, but for christ's sake... that's just neglect.

I hear the local tv report talking about it in the other room, going to check it out.

JayOnThaBeat 2009-10-15 22:01

Re: Breaking news: 6 year old boy may be in runaway experimental balloon

Speaking of neglect.... they just said on the news that the father would regularly take his two children on 'storm chases.'

Nothing like offering your children up to the gods.

I'm beginning to think this is going to turn out to be a hoax.

They let the balloon go, and the kid is just chillin' somewhere.

(let's hope, anyway)

Who else here would rather that the news waited and checked what happened before they started reporting this 'breaking news'..... It really served zero purpose. Breaking news should be reserved for things that effect everyone's lives, like wars breaking out.... It should not be used to tug on your heart strings.

I find it rather sickening overall

The kid was at the house the entire time.

An investigation should be conducted on the parents.

Unacceptable!!!!

That's what I mean!

Now all of these jokes are funny! If the news had just waited to find out what happened, then everything would be cool....

The whole situation seems like a joke now....

"National media follows stray helium balloon while boy hides in attic"

I'm tellin you, the parents are shallow attention-whores, and the whole thing was a setup.

I feel it in my bones.

THAT disgusts me.

Sure, reporting on Jon and Kate was displaced by this silliness. A travesty.

Seriously, imo this was newsworthy and the only real irresponsibility I see is with the parents and the early jokers.

WOW Very misleading first words, when you said breaking news i thought you were gonna follow it with "i just got my n900" or "my n900 just shipped"

Dude bummer

Remember "Last Caress" by the misfits

I've got somethin' to say
I killed your baby today and it
Doesn't matter much to me
As long as it's dead

Though I much prefer the Metallica version on Garage Days.

Ah to be a young a55hole again

BUSTED!!!

The kid says they did it for show! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI6UONWCq7A

Listen to the father try to recover from it! Oh my god, I could barely watch.... so awkward.... I think the dad poops his pants when the kid spills the beans... you can hear it on the video

and later: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxtFXtiUbbw

crazy... it's the MOST awkward thing I've ever seen

Re: Breaking news: 6 year old boy may be in runaway experimental balloon

I watched the video, but remember, this kid is not a 100% reliable witness, so any "busted!!" comment based on what he said is not 100% reliable.

I thought the kid might have said that he heard them shouting his name because he thought that's what they wanted him to say. Then when asked why [he didn't answer their calls], he offered what seemed to him to be a reasonable answer: for the show. That doesn't make it true.

The kid appears to be confused about the difference between TV and reality, and with good reason.

edit: words added in brackets for clarity

Maybe! but how do you explain the pants pooping? explain that away with your fancy science!

geneven 2009-10-16 08:05

Re: Breaking news: 6 year old boy may be in runaway experimental balloon

Not to be too serious here, but if I was talking to CNN and my kid said something that appeared to bust me, I might poop too, whether it was true or not.

Re: Breaking news: 6 year old boy may be in runaway experimental balloon

Recording made right after the 6-year-old was found in a cardboard box in his attic.

ysss 2009-10-16 10:22

Re: Breaking news: 6 year old boy may be in runaway experimental balloon

Meh. They've got the motive, the timing is impeccable as they're making the reality show at that time, the dad's reaction clearly showed signs of guilt as he fumbled and mumbled trying to find a proper answer and ends up trying to put the blame on CNN... there's just too many wrong thing that converged on that guy.

I think they pulled the stunt for the reality show they were making and probably even had the blessings of the local sheriff department (a nudge and a wink with the top dogs in the dept) but somehow it got out of hand and it got not only nationwide, but WORLDWIDE coverage.

They tried to roll with the punches and made use of it but tripped.

@geneven: if it were me, I'd ask the kid to explain what he meant on camera. "OMG They're onto us!" wouldn't be the first thing that came to my mind.

penguinbait 2009-10-16 11:16

You mean its not a massive RNC plot to get Obama's speech taken off to chase a runaway balloon??

I am pretty sure the first rule of searching a missing child is search everywhere on the property? These cops are freaking idiots.....

Oh my, what a classic! When I read about this the first thing that came to my mind was The Simpsons episode - Radio Bart and 12 Monkeys :)

I thought to myself, "I remember this, the boy is hiding in a barn!"
