Kathy,
it says you are in Cornwall, you could fly from there?

i bet there will be more happening in the other stores though as more apps get prepared and ready :)
i just heard the onedotzero wall display is fully open sourced now (the controller we wrote has been open for a while) so that could be setup in the stores along with other things.

Re: N900 Meetups at Flagship Stores

Yes, I can fly from Newquay to a number of places, including London. But for a 13 minute presentation, I think I'll stream it.

Bring your display a bit nearer (I can drive to Plymouth or Exeter in a couple of hours) and I might try. There's a nokia supported store in Camborne.... but it's not anyone's 'flagship'. ;)

It could be worth it. The event lasted 90 minutes in all. There was food, N900 demos and... one lucky guy won an N900!

Interestingly, they didn't have one to give him, but he'll be getting it in the mail.

Couple of people won headsets and the rest of us had to contend with a Maemo T-shirt. Better than nothing I guess...

Can someone point me towards a date and reg info for the London event? If it's been posted, I'm being a biff as I can't see it...

Re: N900 Meetups at Flagship Stores

London is still not open for registration. Some people are apparently hacking their way around that "small detail". Looking at the page source, London is now at 77/80 and Moscow at 79/80.

But you would think that it's not that difficult for Nokia to notice that and restore order.

Edit: Oh, and the date is not known. So it's not you!

qgil 2009-10-21 20:41

Re: N900 Meetups at Flagship Stores

Back home. The stream doesn't give you many things, and we didn't bring it to the pub afterward.

I got "cornered" by two guys interested in OpenStreetMap and I ended up demoing OSM2Go and answering questions about the project (with the Wikipedia page at hand not to misquote).

In the raffle there were 2 missing guys that actually would have got a BH-905 (I'm looking after myself). I was tempted of faking a moustache displayed in my N900 and just pick the prize impersonating Ville Someone, but Jussi would have probably betrayed me.

Still 77 seats *available*. For all we know, this could just be 3 pre-reserved seats for whomever got inside information.

I wouldn't mind registering, but I have to know the date before I can commit, could be out of the country.

@Anidel: Ping me on Google Chat if the thing opens and you notice it before me (and vice versa, I'll ping you if I notice it opening before you do)

@Quim: Do you have any contact that could look into the number of seats available? It would be nice if everyone had the same "fair" start as all the others, and not have 3 magic seats disappear out of nowhere (yes, I do realise this is not your job).

Thanks

anidel 2009-10-21 21:22

Re: N900 Meetups at Flagship Stores

No, trust me :)

There were 80 at the beginning, 79 when a guy wrote on twitter he played with the POST method and got a confirmation e-mail, 77 now that I wrote on this post about the POST way of cheating. :)

So, people cheated. Anyway...

I don't know your name on GTalk...ping me now :)

Nokia - Please cancel all un-official registrations.

London now at 74 remaining!! :(

I really hope Nokia cancel all reservations made prior to officially opening it to the general public.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little tempted to attempt a manual form submission myself, but I haven't and won't be, or I would be just as bad as the 6 who have!

Assuming London is overbooked, as it stands, the last 6 people who would have made it will miss out! I hope I am lucky enough to get a place, but if not, I would at least like to know that I was in with a fair chance.

Please Nokia, level the playing field before officially opening registrations for London and Moscow.

Yes they do. I've been in a [I]tiny[I] Nokia store that barely had room for two customers to stand up in.

Re: N900 Meetups at Flagship Stores

Not all the shops with a big Nokia logo are Nokia stores. Where did you find this tiny one?

For those concerned with waiting lists, why not contact directly the shops? http://www.flagship.nokia.com/ has phone numbers and email addresses e.g. london.flagship...nokia.com

PS: Jussi is now in its way to Dubai...

That link seems bit dated. It doesn't mention the Dubai store at all. Also, the South American flagship stores don't have N900 meetups according to this page: http://blogs.nokia.com/nseries/n900meetup/

Re: N900 Meetups at Flagship Stores

Apparently there are some smaller Nokia-branded stores, at least in developing countries. I suppose it makes sense over there to have at least one store which doesn't sell china clones as genuine ;)

Because when you call them, you get a salesperson on the line who doesn't know what you're talking about. "I'm sorry, if you have an issue with the website, I'm afraid I can't help you. Did you wish to enquire about anything else?".

Yup, called them and they of course don't know yet when the event will take place (he did know about it though) but said they're gonna have the device on show by mid November, so .. I think it won't be before that.

Thanks.
I'll keep looking the website.

Don't forget the USB-drive with the N97 demo in it :D

Actually, on top of the presentations, there was quite a lot of time to talk to the developers and play around with the around dozen N900 -preproduction devices, which I found very useful and exciting. :)

For me participating in the meetup was easy, since I live only about 1 km from the store. I would probably not have attended if it was far away, with more than 1 hour commute.

So you got a free pass to an event, didn't have to pay a single thing, just show up and be happy... And you're moaning because the only thing you got is a t-shirt, drinks, food and got to play with the N900?

Oh man, how does Nokia dare to do such a thing, they're horrible!

pupu 2009-10-25 09:37

Re: N900 Meetups at Flagship Stores

[QUOTE=CrashandDie;357411Oh man, how does Nokia dare to do such a thing, they're horrible![/QUOTE]

Yes they are. I wanted that N900! They dangled it in front of my face and then took it away, giving me a T-shirt that reminds me of it instead. That is cruel. ;)

But seriously, getting a T-shirt and finger food is strictly in the "better than nothing" category for me, sorry if that offends you. It's not like Nokia gave the T-shirt with "Maemo" on it to get a fuzzy nice feeling in their collective tummies. They want me to wear it, so that people will ask me about what Maemo is, so that I will then tell them about this great N900 that Nokia presented at this cool exclusive party at the Nokia store with some tasty nibble food. I took it, so that's okay, but I consider that more like bartering than receiving a gift.

The USB stick is actually useful, though. I didn't notice that until the next day. The N97 presentation is a bit odd to see there, though, it's like "here's all this information on your new N97". I guess they forgot to put one in my bag. Now that would have been a great giveaway, if quite odd for that particular event. :D

I was one of the first to sign up for the Chicago event.. so far I haven't heard anything (other than an e-mail saying that more details are coming soon).

Does anyone know how much before the event they are sending out more specific information? It would be good to know the time of the event, so I can plan accordingly.

Update: received the e-mail with more info today :-)

Just to let you know that the problem with the waiting lists has been reported to the organizers of the N900 meet-ups.

Justice always prevails. ;)
