OK, most of my issues are now sorted - it appears to be an instalation issue. I had originally just installed flite, hoping it might work with mm 1.1. However, as I said, it simply segfaulted. Installing the SQL library and mm 1.2 didn't mend it however. Something wierd there.

Anyway, I uninstalled all 3 packages and reinstalled in the order

(reg clean)
1) SQL lib
2) MM 1.2.1 (as it was by then)
3) flite

and now all appears much better. However the /dev/rfcomm0 issue is still there. Would 1.2.2 help with this?

Version 1.2.2 crashes with bluetooth plugin
 

1.2.2 works fine with direct connection to my Adapt BT GPS receiver, but when I try to use /dev/rfcomm0 (after connecting to it with bt plugin) it crashes directly on launch.

I have to zap the preferences to get things to work again.

I haven't verified that rfcomm still works with Maemo Mapper, although there should not have been any changes that would have affected the interoperability of Maemo Mapper with rfcomm. I'll test it out and try to find the problem.

That code is already in v1.2.2 (and v1.2.1, too, but not v1.2). In order to keep the GPS connection enabled when the cover is on, you must disable the "Disconnect when cover on device" option in the Control Panel's "Connectivity" control. Otherwise, the operating system will automatically turn off the WiFi and Bluetooth radios.

Maemo Mapper v1.2.3 Released with rfcomm fix
 

Good news, guys. I reproduced the rfcomm crash and was able to stomp the causal bug.

I subsequently released Maemo Mapper v1.2.3. As usual, you may download the new release from the Maemo Mapper Garage Files page, or you can upgrade straight from the Garage Extras Repository (v1.2.3 is available now).

The bug may have been able to cause crashes even without using rfcomm, depending on your GPS receiver, so even if you do not use rfcomm, if you experience crashes, please upgrade to Maemo Mapper v1.2.3 before filing a bug.

And let me know if you experience crashes with the new version.

I had previously installed version 1.1, ran it with no problems. Tonight I uninstalled it and installed 1.2.3 via the repository. It will not load from the menu, and when running it via an xterm I get a segmentation fault. And I'm not even using a GPS yet. :(

Earlier in this thread there's info on zapping your old preferences. That worked for me.

Someone also reflashed their entire OS in order to get it to work! You mean this command?

I'll try it when I get home. Perhaps this should be included in the documentation, release notes or some place other than just this thread. It could also be the first thing the installer executes when you install v1.2.x.

I know I'm being a wet blanket, but this seems to be the state of most 770 SW right now - it's a pain in the a**! (BTW, I'm working on porting some SW myself right now, and much of the replies in the maemo message boards seem to be "RTFM" when people ask for help. /end rant) In the mean time, thanks for the hard work everyone - it will be a beautiful day when the 770 "just works." :D

Thanks gnuite, mm 1.2.3 works perfectly for me with /dev/rfcomm0 - over an hour solid contact with the cover on. MM now does everything I need, I think.

Actually, I was trying hard to avoid forcing everyone to abandon their settings just to use the new version. There apparently is a bug in the config code, however, that is causing the new code to crash in *some* (not all) situations.

So no, I'm not going to make configuration reset a required part of the upgrade process. Instead, I'm going to try to fix the bug that causes Maemo Mapper 1.2.3 to choke on older versions of the config.

Until then, I apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused by resetting your configuration.

I've been very happy with the new (fast!) changes but I've run into a problem where I always get a "Failed to connect to GPX Directions server: I/O error" when downloading routes. It took me a while to figure out that it was because I had privoxy set as a proxy for the net connection. My question: does MM work through proxies, and if not, can we have a error message that explains this? Should be as straightforward as checking to see if a proxy is set and producing an error box when downloading directions. I can probably hack up the code if someone doesn't have time. --It will save people some grief until proper proxy support can be provided.

I tried the gconf trick, but no cigar - I still get Segmentation Fault from an xterm, and nothing from the menu. :( Again, everything was fine with v1.1, but now 1.2.3 doesn't work. I don't have a GPS hooked up yet.

You did this as the regular user and not root?

If you cleared out your gconf, and it still segfaults immediately, then it sounds like a hardware problem, because everyone else's Nokia 770s are able to load the default configuration without segfault'ing.

This is pretty cool stuff. I haven't tried it yet, but the screenshots look nice. After reading the text, though, is it practical enough for general consumption? Are all zoom levels available? How big are the downloaded files?

I am considering adding your code to the baseline. Of course, proj would be required in order to support the new functionality.

Best thing would be to try it out.
- availability of zoom levels depends on the server (terraserver-usa responds to most of them - others only to certain levels)
- file sizes are more in the range of satellite maps (as lots of maps seem to be hand drawn, compression doesn't work that well - may be the image/jpeg format leads to smaller files)
- currently the most annoying thing is the terraserver-usa behaviour - may be it's possible to add some pauses, when downloading?
- 'proj' should be ready for installation (no graphics!)

Hiking in the Bavarian Alps with these maps worked fine for me!

Regarding gconftool:

I tried it as root and as 'user'. Still getting the segfault. I'm not going to reflash my 770 though, it's such a pain in the butt to get all the little settings and apps back on it. I'll sit back and wait until things become more stable.

BTW, there is no /apps/maemo or even /apps on my machine, so maybe that has something to do with it. And I have no idea what 'gconftool-2' is! Does anyone know the directories/files that are involved in the mapper settings? I'd be happy to delete them by hand rather than trying some script or tool to do it - gconftool doesn't give any feedback.

gconf is the Linux equivalent of the Windows Registry - it's a hierarchical set of configuration data that can be read and written programmatically.

gconftool-2 is a command-line interface for interacting with gconf. use "gconftool-2 --help" for more details, or google about it.

"/apps/maemo" is a name for a gconf key, or, in this case, a key "directory", which is like a container for keys. It is analagous to a directory structure in a file system, but it doesn't correspond (directly) with the file system.

"/apps/maemo" is the key directory in which all maemo applications should place their gconf preferences. "/apps/maemo/maemo-mapper" is the "key directory" in which Maemo Mapper's gconf preferences are placed. You can use the following command to list the keys in the maemo-mapper key directory:

gconftool-2 -a "/apps/maemo/maemo-mapper"

If you run that command after running maemo mapper, it should give you a list of key names and values. Except that if Maemo Mapper crashes before it can save keys, it won't get a chance to create any keys in that key directory, so the directory will remain empty.

So, pdafan, if you would induldge me, what is the output of the above command on your Nokia 770? If it is non-empty, then please PM to me the output.

If it is empty, then I conjecture that there is something unique about your Nokia 770 that is causing the problem. Have you done anything special to your particular Nokia 770, like apply a special theme or use a unique locale? Have you done anything funny with root, like move directories around, or move/delete the /home/user/MyDocs directory or any of its subdirectories?

I'd really like to work with you to discover the problem, because if it _is_ a bug in maemo-mapper, then it might affect other people, and of course I'd like to fix it. If you prefer, we can continue the dialogue in private - just PM me at your convenience.

All versions 1.0 - 1.2.3 worked without issues up until early this week.

Then my tablet decided it wouldn't boot so I had to reflash.

I reinstalled some applications (FBReader etc) and installed 1.2.3.

Received the segmentation error.

Backed out to version 1.1 and have no issues with that version.

/apps refers to /var/lib/gconf/apps

go to /var/lib/gconf/apps/maemo/maemo-mapper and rename (mv) %gconf.xml to old%gconf.xml and try again.

I am sorry to say, but I get Segmentation fault with v.0.12.3 even after renaming first /var/lib/gconf/apps/maemo-mapper/%gconf.xml and later the dir /var/lib/gconf/apps/maemo-mapper/. apt-get (remove|install) maemo mapper did not help so.

Old binary runs in any case opening the configuration dialog box. That after removing old conf data.

The v. 0.12.3 crashes before opening any window.

Edit: the old binary crashes immediately after confirming the configuration. BTW upgrading the package some libs was also upgrded to a new version.

I think an older version (1.0?) of maemo-mapper used /var/lib/gconf/maemo-mapper
You should delete that directory.

The later versions use /var/lib/gconf/maemo/maemo-mapper

Since 1.2.3 seems to work fine for everyone else, maybe there's a conflict with some other application you have installed.

I have the same problem with the new version 1.2.3 of maemo-mapper. It's crash with segfault. Any hints to solve the problem ? Version 1.2.2 run with no problems.

After having deleted the old parameters and with version 1.2.3 all running fine here, also with /dev/rfcomm0 trick.

To everyone who has cleared their configuration and is now getting a segfault on startup with Maemo Mapper v1.2.3: please try typing the following commands (exactly as they appear - use copy/paste) into an xterm.
Then try starting Maemo Mapper. Let me know if this has any effect.

Worked for me :) I had spent the better part of a day trying to troubleshoot this without much luck, then reinstalled 1.1.

I also found that I had an old Maemo Mapper config in apps/maemo-mapper (not apps/maemo/maemo-mapper) so I used
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset to blow that away. My guess is that restoring from backup after I updated to IT2006 left some cruft
on the device, there's a lot of stuff from applications that I don't recall installing on 2006.

And - I just got the iBlue 737 GPS, which works quite well with Maemo Mapper. GPSPassion.com just did a review where they
fairly gushed over it. 25 hour battery life and performance as good as the SiRFstarIII units. Semsons has it $20 off until the end of the month.

BTW - on this site a CODE block inside of a QUOTE causes the page to be too wide.

I would like to edit settings, especially the repository URI's. Editing %gconf.xml seems to be problematic. If I save my settings obtained using:

gconftool-2 -a "/apps/maemo/maemo-mapper"

to a file, and edit the file, is there a way to load the new settings into the gconf database?

a bug, two requests and a question
 

NOTE, if useful: I do have maemo-mapper installed but I don't use it with a GPS receiver. Ok, let's go:


* First, a (kind of) bug (important, for me):

If I have a route loaded and go to the Manage Maps dialog, choose Download Maps - Along Route, it doesn't work: well, it actually does something, but it behaves like choosing the "By Area (see tab)" option.

I'd like to know if anyone experiments this same weird behaviour.


* Second, a (little?) request:

I'd like the app loading the last loaded route on startup (if a route is displayed when exiting), it is very annoying to manually reload it everytime.


* Third, a (less important) request:

I'd like to pan the maps like the web pages in the browser, that is like the Google Maps application: pressing, holding and moving the stylus on the screen.


* Fourth, a question:

Is the "GPX Driving directions" web app open source and available? I'd like to put it on my server for personal use rather than relying on someone other's server, who knows if it is available in the very moment I need it?

Do not attempt to modify the XML manually.

Not that a know of. You can use gconftool-2 to modify settings individually. Use "gconftool-2 --help" or google gconftool-2 for help on how to use gconftool-2.

Otherwise, just use Maemo Mapper itself to edit the settings...

I've considered this, and I'll try to implement it soon; there are just some issues I need to work out first (e.g. what if multiple routes are loaded? what if the route file is gone? etc.)
This would be difficult given the current implementation, plus it's hard to do while driving, plus it gets in the way of the context-sensitive "click-and-hold" menu, plus it's strenuous on the screen (can create scratches, especially if done while driving).

I've been meaning to investigate this, but there are more pressing things (like bugs) that I need to work out...

It is not (yet) open source, but the functionality it performs may soon be moved to Maemo Mapper itself (if I can work out the string parsing issues efficiently enough).
