I hope they'll offer a sexier (read: female) voice too.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Anyone know how long it will be before sygic release theirs. I read something the other week that it might be before the end of 2009 but that doesn't seem likely now as we are almost at the end of the year.

I could do with this app asap. I would have had second thoughts if I had realised the N900 couldn't do step by step navigation out of the box so let us all know as soon as this is ready to install.

Any updates on the Sygic voice guidance for the N900?

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I contacted Anna from Sygic and she said that they were hoping to release their voice guidance software for the N900 on 18th Jan. Hopefully not long to go now!

Other phone's can be had for about 62 EURO's. I imagine the US price point to be $79 - 89.99

That's a very reasonable price :)
Will be about the same in Europe I suppose (€80/90)

From an email I received this morning...

Hi Andy,

For Nokia Maemo N900, you’d need to wait a little more. One thing is that we have it ready and running – for short demo see http://www.youtube.com/user/Sygic#p/u/0/2HWs4nAJaiM and we originally planned to bring it to sale by the end of the year from our e-shop. However, in December, we have been chosen by Nokia to feature on their Maemo Select web and we are now working with them on further steps on both sides to launch the product together – this is planned for appx. Jan 18, 2010.

Kind regards,
Anna

Who cares about Ovi Maps if this works? Let Nokia worry about core OS issues and let a nav company worry about the mapping software.

Who's in charge of pricing these things? $80/€80 = stupid money... They can't just think "a stand along GPS equivalent costs €100 so we can get away with €80" - who's gonna buy this? You're better off with a bottom end TomTom for the same money.

if you're fine with having 2 devices and having to manage 2 sets of adress lists, sure.

i for one am happy to pay 80€ for a good navigation solution for my all-in-one mobile device :)

i think the most basic tomtom is about 130 euro.. But then you only get for my country the "benelux" maps.

Nokia/Ovi maps are pretty well valued if you ask me. I think they are about the same as Sygic but sygic is a bit different then ovi:

http://www.sygic.com/index.php/en/fa...-included.html

thats not so nice... Look ovi maps you can get a 1 year (i could buy a 3 year for 100 i believe but thats gone) but then you have constantly the latest software and maps..

But sygic seems to be a bit different, they do tell you that the 2009 software will be update able but not the maps..
But i dont know how they work, must i download all the maps at once and have them installed? Or can i just say i want now the USA because i am on vacation for 2 weeks (coming from Europa)

Do remember that maps are not cheap.. They have to be constantly updated and new features are constantly added, Those are done most of the time by just driving in a car for days/weeks and making pictures in all directions..
Really that is quite a bit of labor so expensive!

If find a yearly subscription of 50 to 80 for navigation and constantly updated maps (whole world) and software a perfect price.

/me raises his hand

There was very little disclaimer of the fact that Maemo Ovi maps is a really really crappy shade of the Symbian version in the N900 promotions. Ovi maps isn't why i bought the N900, but it is how it first got my attention, and IMO after the way it pitched the N900 Nokia has a moral obligation to get Ovi for Maemo up to parity with its other offering.

As it is now, it's an embarassment of a preinstalled app and is largely dysfunctional.

Nokia should make a deal with them and offer this to everyone to sell the platform as an excuse for the crappy OVI map...

The price point to me is a bit over the top.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Actually, the search function on the N900 Maps seems to work better to me than it ever did on my S60 Maps.. But yeah, the routing function is pretty useless (unless I've managed to miss a turn by turn instruction at least).

So, likely I too will get Sygic! :)

verhagke 2010-01-12 17:45

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I'd imagine that part of the cost is needed to cover the licensing fee for the maps. So I don't think the price mentioned is outrageous, but also wish that Nokia would be able to include a killer gps/mapping app like the Google Droid.

The fact that they are working with Sygic to bring this to market as part of their web launch indicates to me that we shouldn't expect a better Nokia offering anytime soon.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Android platform is offering free navigation.
Nokia should offer the same if they want to compete.
One solution is to just buy Sygic (the whole company or just the app)
and offer it for free.
Another option is to improve Ovi Maps.

Nexus becomes cheaper than N900 considering the free navigation.

Don't sweat it...some people are just not good at coping with, nor tolerating, others from different cultures.
