So last night I'm sitting in a motel room. I plugged the N900 into the TV, not really expecting much remembering the somewhat disappointing video out of the N95. Surprise! The video looks very good. I started a movie and was able to control it using the BT keyboard sitting a comfortable distance away. I don't know if that's a wow moment, but it sure made the evening a little more entertaining.

Re: What have been your 'wow' moments with the N900 so far?

i guess my WOW moment would have been earlier tonight... had the browser open to pandora to listen to some music and a friend IMs me and we chat for a good 30 minutes all the while he's sending me links to different articles. All this time i also have my email app open and another browser viewing my google reader page, and the multitasking was working flawlessly! And then my WOW moment turned into a wow moment as every webpage open became unresponsive, couldnt reload the pages couldnt close the pages but at least it didnt interfere with the other open apps. After being unresponsive for about 5 minutes a system message finally popped up and asked if I wanted to close the unresponsive webpages so at least it fixed itself eventually. Other than that my experience thus far with the phone have been generally positive :)

Re: What have been your 'wow' moments with the N900 so far?

I've had quite a few moments with this wonderful device :)
the first time I saw any parts of liqbase running on my n900 I was blown away.
I sent a bug report into nokia "this device runs too fast, please slow it down"

the most rewarding however has to be this: http://liqbase.net/liqflow_test.AVI

ive wanted to do it for years - its the closest I've gotten to touching my own code.
the video was taken about 10 minutes after I made it and I added accelerometer control to it not long after.
lots of people like it, its simple and effective :)

addendum, this is how it looks when used with others: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk27PenpAz0

Yes, when i was in my gfs car and the fm transmitter worked flawlessly, we live in a pretty populated area and i was very impressed it worked perfectly.

my wow moment was when i took it in to work. we were watching music videos on you tube and playing it through our stereo speakers with the fm transmitter. childish i know! but i was so impressed. i love this phone, it's a keeper, it's a dream to use after my blackberry storm.

sounds off topic, but [edit: speaking of apple] do you think that apple deliberately restrict something that can jeopardize its device performance and aesthetics by not having multitasking the way people like? i mean, i can tolerate the quirk in eye-candy as long as I can many things done (i've seen n900s does 'quirk' when a lot of programs open). I also experienced on macbook that it seems like apple restrict the speed of the dvd so it's less noisy.

Re: What have been your 'wow' moments with the N900 so far?

The device itself is a continuing wow moment for me. But in regards to the FM transmitter it had a surprise easter egg. I drive a Prius, as such the control head is digital so I see all of the sub-band text information a station sends out. The system will also keep the station ID and put it into the "button" on the touch screen. I was very surprised the second time, I went to play music through my car radio. The button to which I set the open channel I use had the station label "NOKIA".

Really excited to get the phone and unbox it that was about all. As soon as i touched the screen for the first time my jaw dropped. It was no where near as smooth and responsive as my HTC HERO.
Had no problems initially but after 48 hrs of playing with it i realised that the phone side of the software is poor. Yes i know people say well its not a phone really blah blah, but the reception is really poor and it constantly dropped calls.
Found the phone uncomfortable to hold for long periods due to its thickness. The software is buggy and i know it will get better but with the battery issues, the poor touch functionality, the slow response and the size of the thing it just had to go.
Bring on the motorola milestone. Got it today and its a dream in comparison. The screen is beautiful and it all seems to work as it should. Slightly faster than my (OLD) Hero and with crystal clear clarity on phone calls. The speaker is hellish loud.

So in a nut shell im returning my n900 to nokia under the 14 day im not happy guarantee, selling my HERO and continuing to drewl over my milestone. Love it , just Love it.

I had the Droid for two weeks, but returned it. N900 kicks it's butt:

1. 25gb more usable storage
2. Do not have to remove the battery to get to the sd card
3. Stylus is a nice option- Droid seemed too senstive
4. Web is far better on the N900
5. Sound quality from the 3.5 jack is far better than Droid
6. Video codec support- Droid is stuck with MP4, but the same MP4's actually look better on the N900 and the N900 also has mpg, wmv, avi, divx etc...
7. Camera is better on the N900
8. I would say the N900 has more app space (at least 1.6gb more), but at the rate things are going for Maemo 5 apps, that may be irrelevant;)

Still, Droid / Milestone are MUCH better as a phone-centric device and the game emulators on Android are truly masterpieces (yes- they are).

I have a rooted G1 for a back-up to my N900:)

No real wow factors because I've grown up keeping up with advancing tech all my life, this seems like the logical next step. if we stared in awe at every new generation of everything we'd look like *****s.

UI is nice, browser is nice, my major criticism is the phone function and antenna. Worse reception than my G1, less phone functionality than my G1.

The only thing that will get an audible "Wow" from me is an N64 or PSX emulator that runs 80%+ of full speed.

Great device nonetheless, I'm reasonably satisfied with it.

P.S. Why does every thread that praises this phone instantly get 5 stars, and every critical post gets labeled as "troll post"? If we don't recognize a device's flaws what chance will we get to fix them?

WOW - reboots
WOW - Nokia is clueless in fixing it

To be honest, the N900 is great, but constant reboots kills its usability completely. Didn't think of it at first, thought it simply was due to some software or intermittent connections. But, this has been going on for weeks, and still no update of any sort or shape.

N900 = 900 reboots each day.

My WW factor has taken a little while (until I got my head around this new baby!!)...
Can you imagine this one a mobile device:

Playing a mp3 on media player in background while browsing with Firefox on ebay and youtube
Downloading a file via Transmission (bit torrent)(amazing speed!!)
And the phone rang and had a converstaion with a friend at the same time!!
(ref torrent - I am connected on my home WiFi !)
And the phone was still very responsive - yup that DID stun me.... ;0)

I have had mine 4 days and only had one random reboot yesterday when I tried to play a video and it just rebooted. My N900 had already been slowing down for hours though, I think there is something iffy with qtirreco as its super-slow at times. So I suspect it was caused by something I installed not Nokia.

Granted I also rebooted it several times myself due to telepathy-haze getting stuck with "network error" but you can't blame Nokia for that either.

I sympathise with people who are getting random reboots but its either bad luck being in an area with incompatible cell towers / WiFi routers, or its a hardware fault in the N900. Either way, its a hard nut to crack and I think calling Nokia useless for struggling with it is a little unfair. Yes if I had the problem I would be pissed too but I am sure Nokia are doing their best to fix it and clearly it is something they did not experience in testing.

The phone itself a BIG "WoW" ... so every moment with is nothing but a "WOW"

p.s. made 8 of my friends sell of their iPhone 3GS and buy the N900 - this can be a wow moment for me.

Re: What have been your 'wow' moments with the N900 so far?

Same here... Nearly every moment is a WOW moment. Especially the first minutes after unboxing it.

Special wow moments:
Lately we needed to setup a rather complex network but none of the Machines have been plugged yet and we needed the plan. So I downloaded the plan with the N900 and attached it to a beamer to display it to everyone.

This week I was driving to a meeting and a friend of mine was in the car behind me. When we arrived he told me that he was listening to a cool radio station on 88.1 :D

Re: What have been your 'wow' moments with the N900 so far?

I've had a lot of WOW moments, the last one was....
phone rings, I pick up the call, and start having a conversation *then* realise this was a skype call inbound, and only because the other person told me.
They then pinged me a link in skype IM, I put them on speaker, opened the link to amazon, discussed the item (a proposed present). flipped back to phone and off speaker. finished conversation.

freakin' awesome.

I've had my N900 since before Launch Day (dev loaner - yay), but while I've gotten used to it, it still makes me smile all the time. I knew some of what to expect, but I still got some big WOWs from a few particular things:

WOW...
- The browser is smooth... really smooth. I like my N810, but this makes using it seem horrible in comparison - the Maemo 5 browser is a dream.
- Standard-def movie playback without conversion (when your primary desktop is a dual-core Atom, converting is a pain)
- Finishing up coding a demo app for a presentation *in* the presentation room *on* the phone, compiling on a remote server, and then scp'ing it back to test. A laptop is better if you have one available, but that is undeniably awesome.
- A phone made by a company who's VP says (paraphrased) "people are hacking it, and I think that's awesome!"

Sarcastic-WOW... (not complaining, just raising my eyebrow a bit)
- how did the world clock pass QA when a city in Venezuala ended up in Italy, as well as a fair few other messed up cities like that? The answer I got when I asked was "I shouldn't comment on that"... XD

I have tried multiple sites for streaming and not one has worked. The audio is there but the picture is a mile behind and stutters like hell. Can i ask which version of flash you have, as it says mine is not 9.4.

WOW!
And practical too, since it transfers much faster than bluetooth. Now we just need a dynamic DNS client...

It was wow when I connected the N900 to the laptop via USB and could use it as a 3G modem without any additional configuration. It just worked (Ubuntu 9.10). :D

The other wow moment was when I first got audio out of the FM receiver hardware in September. :D

A lot of wow...

The whole desktop experience is awesome and smooth, the email client and the browser are great, skype out of the box and the whole integration of contacts is sweet...

And for the more geeky side of me: opening the appication manager to find out application stores are really deb repositories... ssh, terminal, and TI emulator...

Re: What have been your 'wow' moments with the N900 so far?

I think my biggest 'wow moment' thus far was yesterday when I used my n810 for a little while. I'd been relatively disappointed with my typing speed on the n900 because of the new layout, which had kept me from noticing how great the keyboard really was- the 810 (which I always loved) felt terrible in comparison. A little more practice on the 900 will probably have me even faster than I was on the larger keyboard.
I've been pretty impressed with the new one thus far. Vncviewer works well (though I need to get rid of the toolbar in fullscreen mode), rdesktop works fine, openssh is openssh...I'm quite happy with Conversations/haze (though I've missed file transfer).
SIP seems to work well with Gizmo but my work asterisk account is acting up (probably something on my end; I'll have a look at that when I get a chance).
I've been scrambling around trying to figure out how to set up bluetooth NAP, but I haven't been able to find much useful information. Finally ran across some promising pages from a gentoo user last night, so hopefully I'll work it out shortly.
I'm looking forward to getting dialcentral/TheOneRing working, but using the GV page is OK for now.

See my post here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37094

I wanted a great software (Mercurial) which hasn't already been ported to Maemo 5/N900.
I just had to set up the Scratchbox, build the software there and dump the files on my N900 !

Granted, this is just a command-line utility but still.
It reveals that everything is made to help the developer and not to obstruct him.

I'd be curious to see how hard it would be to do that on iPhone OS or Android.

However, the email client needs an overhaul..

The best was when I found a text on the manual stating "You can develop on your own phone" (something on those lines).

At last a developer was seen as a user.

An overhaul... now don't be modest :D:D

I think it needs to be reimplemented from scratch. The existing email client is absolutely horendous. The fact that my Inbox disappears when I click into my email accounts...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2767/...e2ee064a89.jpg

Where'd my Inbox go?? and then 15 ~ 30 seconds later it appears!
Simply unusable in my opinion. If this thing is positioned as an Internet tablet, I bloody well think accessing my Inbox should be instantaneous. It is caching emails locally right? Not going to the server every time to fetch my Inbox.

... as a newbie to smart phones I can safely say I'm blown away by pretty much everything my n900 does ... my "wow" moment really does have to be the browsing experience tho ... the touchscreen and browser combine to make surfing the web an absolute joy, tis rarely necessary to zoom even to select the smallest links... and the fonts are rendered so beuautifully even tiny text is easy on the eye...

I'm not really sure what I was expecting but I don't think I was expecting everything to be so easy... setting things just the way I want has been a breeze and I now have a phone that's just right for me ... very glad I waited for the n900 I don't think I'd have been anywhere near as happy with anything else ...

"WOW...this calendar is nicer than other smartphone calendars, but I don't know why."

"WOW...I don't "have" to download any apps to get all the functionality I want (a la the DROID...except for Sling/HAVA player, and LED flashlight).

"WOW...this screen is nowhere near as crappy as I thought it would be."

"wow...Flash based sites work really well, but the embedded media players don't always play smoothly, or may not be supported at all...DOH!" :(
