Re: led flashlight

I installed Flashlight but could not see it on status bar right after installation.
It randomly shows up at one point, I used it for a bit and disappeared again. Reboot did not help.

Re: led flashlight

The option was reliably showing up for me after i installed 0.1. I just let it upgrade to 0.2 this afternoon and now the option is gone (yes, lens cover is open). i haven't rebooted yet..

Re: led flashlight

The program was working perfectly until I updated it into a newer version. Then the icon just went away. Sniff. Please bring it back. :p

On a side note, would it help to save battery if there was a strobe (rapid on-off) mode option? (I don't know how LEDs consume energy.)

I just uninstalled it and installed it again (from extras-testing using application manager) and it's working correctly for me (and also after reboot).

I tried uninstall & reinstall too, but no dice for me, the icon is still gone.

Reinstalled and rebooted a second time (as I was messing around with a bunch of other apps), and now it works. Cool.

Torch app

Hi,

On my xperia and K800i I always had this killer app that let me use the led flash as a torch without having to start the camera..
Why isnt something like that developed for Maemo5? Or is it already?:rolleyes:

Thx.

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

If it would be possible to disable the camera, maybe then it would be also possible to check the lightness level from the sensor. If the surroundings are lit -> start camera automatically. Otherwise, the camera or flashlight could be switched on from the status bar.

I cannot get this Flashlight to work on my device at all. It some what disappeared completely after the installation. It won't show up as widget applet. I reinstalled like 10times and restart my device over and over. But no dice..

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

How does one install this again?

I had it installed "on my original 900" from 2 weeks ago, and I just received my replacement today. I DL'd "both" versions of the applet in "extras-dev" (...armel.deb), but whenever I click on either, it just prompts for "which application to open".

Thanks for any help.

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

Neat. I recall talking about this on #maemo, but what came up was twofold.

1. Camera app interference.
2. Driving LEDs safely. From what we've determined, LEDs are only rated for 320 mA for .5 seconds, and 50mA continuous. Does this drive the LEDs at full brightness, or at safe levels for continous?

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

0.2 does not show up in the status menu for me either.

Regarding the UI, I don't think the status menu makes much sense. Instead, when a user opens the camera cover, there should be a prompt asking if you want to use the camera or flashlight functionality. Or be able to switch to the flashlight from within the camera app.

Why they called it TORCH...it's not even cool..it's just a white blank screen. I thought i'll be seeing a TORCH WITH FIRE>

Well, because some people like to call everything that light up as torch.. I guess. EG: apple Iphone 3GS lol.

Iphone 3GS User: " oh look at my torch application.. Can your N900 do that? look at my screen is lighting up really bright at night.." lol

Me: "LOL>>> *Silently whisper *******... "

Seriously, Roman created a LED app for N900 and we don't even showing it off. What give the Iphonefanatic to be so happy with their blank screen brightness?

What a neat flashlight! Works well for me. Took me a minute to find the UI, but now that I have, it makes perfect sense.

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

Still getting a bug which disables my camera. Steps to reproduce:

Open the shutter.
With the camera app still open, go to the desktop.
Start Flashlight
return to the camera app and try to take a picture. The camera will report "Operation Failed".
Any further attempt to load the camera app without resetting the N900 will report "Operation Failed".

Please, anyone see if they can confirm this. Also, is there a bugtracker that I should be reporting to?

I can confirm that (using 51.1), already reported a bug: https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/ind...1165&atid=4364

This is a blocker since it breaks a system feature.

Anyone know this, the developer? I really don't want to break the LEDs....

hello

I d like to know f it is possible to tweak something to get a pop up when the lens cover is open to choose if i want the camera app or to switch of the LED?

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

where are you guys worrying about? my n95 and n96 even have an official option to turn on the flash when making a video to have supported light.

I dont think you can break your LED. by turning them on and keep them on.

i'd like an answer to this too............? :)

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

LEDs are tough to break...but if this app sets the LEDs to maximum brightness (like the brightness the moment you take a picture with flash), it will shorten lifespan.

This flashlight app is cool! Finally I can use my phone as if it is a real torch! Thankfully the flashlight is not in red like my n95 8gb used to...

Open camera cover, close the camera application. At the desktop, Press the status bar (the bar with the clock) as you would do to initiate internet connection or wifi, you should see "Flashlight" appears in the status menu.

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

An interface which I would really like to have is for the flashlight to be activated by sliding the lens cover open twice within two seconds, e.g. open-shut-open. Then there would be no need to fiddle with the on-screen interface (which for me means putting on my reading glasses!).

Roger

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

I like the idea of a simpler interface; usually I need a flashlight quickly. But wouldn't that cause a two second delay in using the camera? That would cause me to miss some shots. What about opening the lens cover while the shutter button is depressed starts the flashlight?

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

For those wondering about burning out the LEDs or overheating / overvoltage problems, it looks like its been pretty well thought out (well done devs!)

Here is a snippet of source code from the linux kernel:
Code:

/* Must be limited to 500 ms in RX-51 */
.max_flash_timeout      = 500000,              /* us */
/* Must be limited to 320 mA in RX-51 B3 and newer hardware */
.max_flash_intensity    = 19,
/* Must be limited to 50 mA in RX-51 */
.max_torch_intensity    = 1,

and here is a snippet of source code from the flashlight app.
Code:

_("Short-circut fault detected!\nTurning off flashlight."));
                } else if (status & FLASHLIGHT_STATUS_OVERTEMPERATURE_FAULT) {
                        flashlight_status_plugin_show_notification (plugin,
                                _("Overtemperature fault detected!\nTurning off flashlight."));
                } else if (status & FLASHLIGHT_STATUS_TIMEOUT_FAULT) {
                        flashlight_status_plugin_show_notification (plugin,
                                _("Timeout fault detected!\nTurning off flashlight."));
                } else if (status & FLASHLIGHT_STATUS_OVERVOLTAGE_FAULT) {
                        flashlight_status_plugin_show_notification (plugin,
                                _("Overvoltage fault detected!\nTurning off flashlight."));

Hope that clears up any concerns.
It would still be nice to have official word from a Nokia rep concerning the mean time before failure rating of the LED modules when running at intensity=1

There wouldn't need to be a two-second delay.

As soon as the lens cover is opened, the software says "was the cover previously opened in the last two seconds? If so, start the torch, if not, start the camera".

Your idea of starting the torch by opening the lens cover with the shutter button pressed is also a fine one, but there are other mods using the shutter button for other purposes (such as bringing up the task switcher) so this may cause problems. But there might be other ways to do it, such as opening the lens cover while covering the proximity sensor.

Roger

Re: [Maemo 5] LED Flashlight / Torch Application?

I wish there were a way to use the LED Flashlight in conjunction with the camera application, instead of the two uses being mutually exclusive. That way, the N900 could be used as an illuminated magnifying viewer.

I have updated to version 3.x which I don't like.

Is there a way to get back 2.0?

Many thanks

I can't use this app/widget. i installed it and worked fine, then installed a few more apps and games. now the flashlight button is gone, uninstalled it rebooted and reinstalled it and rebooted, still missing. i uninstalled all apps i installed and rebooted then installed flashlight and rebooted and it's still not showing up. i'm not sure what broke it. i'm only getting familar with the linux shell. i'm going to try uninstall everything again and see what leaves a mark, i think the codecs for the media player don't uninstall when u uninstall the app as i'm still able to play video's which aren't out of box supported.

Edit:
i got it sorted. dunno what was the problem but it show's up now.
