Re: When will the next firmware update be released?

Nokia needs to assign some CSRs to just this forum. Or atleast to tweet updates and info.

In 3 days it wont happen. Nokia lied to us again.

Re: I thought there was a firmware update this month

I thought the announcement was that the update was 'expected' before the end of the year but might be wrong. Do you have a reference to the announcement from Nokia?

Re: I thought there was a firmware update this month

Seems to be that way, sadly :(
Although upcoming FW has been already released for the selected bug-reporters.

Personally I don't give a damn whether it will include portrait web browser view or not, but would be honestly disappointed if Nokia won't include voice guided navi for OVI Maps, 'cause bundled GPS receiver is completely useless now.

PS. It's not just Nokia, Sygic also promised to release their navi software at the end of December '09 and yet still nothing happened so far.

The firmware has been sent to selected testers on Christmas. This process will most likely take a few weeks to a month or two depending if there are any major bugs related to the new firmware.

Agree.
I hadn't appreciated when I upgraded from the N95 that i was actually losing functionality by forgoing the turn by turn navigation. i would have had second thoughts about the N900 if i had realised that this wasn't there straight out of the box. I saw the reference to sat nav on the specs and assumed it could do what the N95 already does. I guess the N900 will get there - sooner rather than later hopefully.

The world and more judging by a lot of posts on this forum!

Re: I thought there was a firmware update this month

Well, fact is that every major review site has written "the device is lacking this and this and this, but this will all be fixed in a firmware update in december" and Nokia has done nothing to dement or confirm this. However you look at it, customers have been expecting an update in december and whether Nokia is at fault or not, customers are now disappointed because of this unfulfilled promise.

We all know that firmware updates being late isn't exclusive to Nokia though. Htc Hero, iPhone and several others come to mind.

I've looked at the software for updating the n900 firmware and am a bit concerned that it only specifies 32 bit systems, is it possible to update via a 64 bit system?

You won't have to reflash the N900 using Flasher or PC Suite software, It will be an incremental updates you'll insall via the App Manager. The usual routine is that you will get notifiction when it's available.

When you go to installed it it will say that you should make a Backup of your device, before proceeding. You should follow that advice. When you proceed, the N900 will start performing the update which will take a bit of time. After it's done, the N900 will reboot (usually). And then.. well that's all.

With 64bit linux no problem. Just manually unpack from .deb flusher and it is work

This is why I still carry my N95 around wherever I go. The only problem is I have to be switching SIM card every time I need to use the GPS on the N95. It is a pain....

Well, that's not fair then. Nokia have lied to us, again!
First the release of the N900, now new firmware!
They promised new firmware before the end of the year, it's their fault they are unable to do so!
It's the principle of the whole thing that pisses me off, not that i have to wait.

To find out how much how much credit left with my 'pay as you go' account with vodafone I dial *#1345# and on my Samsung E900 back would come a text telling me how much credit I have left.

This does not work with the n900, I am informed this is a bug and will be addressed at the next firmware upgrade, how does this relate to your telling me, I do not need to reflash the n900?

I am rather puzzled as to why Nokia says it will upgrade the firmware and you saying we do not need to upgrade the firmwear. Thx.

Rushmore 2009-12-28 15:08

Re: I thought there was a firmware update this month

IF Nokia stated that they "expected" an update to be published before the end of the year and it will not, common communication courtesy (aka customer service and relations) would be to update the statement.

Leaving people hanging is lame, but has there even been a statement implying a release by EOY?

When the new firmware is available, you will be able to upgrade to it using the standard 'app manager' upgrade path, without needing to do a full reflash. 'Upgrade' and 'flash' are not necessarily the same thing: you don't need to completely reinstall windows every time windows update detects something new - it'll be the same with maemo.

He didn't say that. He said you don't upgrade the firmware by reflashing the device, you upgrade it by installing newer packages, just like on a normal size computer.

Me too with my G1;)

I use Navigator, voice search, Shopsavyy, Shazaam and other fun apps too much to stop cold until the N900 matures with apps. My G1 is a nice reliable bridge until this happens.

N900 rocks without even considering the smartphone function, but I got mine at $422 after rebate. My opinion could be different if I paid considerably more, but the more I use the N900 for media and web function, the less I think that:)

So is reflash purely for unbricking an n900?

If this is the case I misunderstood.

But what bothers me is, If I ever have the misfortune to 'brick' my n900, I can only use a 32 bit system to reflash it.

Re: I thought there was a firmware update this month

If there is one thing I learned from dealing with Nokia is to never believe what they say in regards to dates.

The only thing I really wish for in the firmware update is some improvement with my reception. It seems the N900 radio is worse than that of my G1 and my battery is suffering because of it.

According to this reply 64-bit (at least with linux) is possible to flash.

Yep, I reflashed it several times.... You can manually extract flasher or install with ignoring Architecture.

Re: I thought there was a firmware update this month

Nokia has not lied to anyone.

I can't remember Nokia EVER setting a release date for any new firmware on any of their products. Why don't they set firm dates, you ask? I'm pretty sure that if they had set a date of say, December 27th, 2009, and it didn't get release by yesterday because of say, a bug they were fixing, the forums would be full of "Nokia sucks! They lied to us! There was no firmware update yesterday!"

All these "when's the new firmware coming" threads are just a waste of bandwidth.

Will a new firmware come? I hope so. When will it come? I'm sure someone at Nokia has a good idea, but us lowly peons are not allowed to know.

Now, I know some of you have practically un-useable devices, and I sympathize with you. But taking your frustration out on Nokia through these forums doesn't help speed things up.

You got your rebate back already? I have not filed mine yet. Rumor has it that those that purchased from D3LL with the deal, just like me, are not eligible for the rebate.
-How did you file yours?
-Did you have to copy the IMEI code on the box or did you cut it. I definitely will not cut mine if that's what have to be done.
