Pretty much everything on the hardware side is better than its older brothers. The ones that aren't better are..

- smaller screen (4 inch to 3.5)
- no more USB host =(
- no SDHC slots =( (can't use my 16 GB SDHC cards I have in my n800 right now).

Software side the OS is better for finger usage and it's alot faster. But at the same time due to changes from Maemo 4 to Maemo 5 alot of things have to be retooled.

Hardware is mostly significantly better.

The chrome around the flash can ruin pictures and the flip out stand is pathetic.

Hard to say how the GPS compares because of the problems with the currently available software.

The software is wildly mixed.

Probably nothing.

Just my side. I've had mine 4 four days. 2 days in and I realised that email wasn't working. The email side is horrible, the N900 won't cache emails and folders locally and doesn't like to update on its own. Every time I want to look at my email I have to wait 20 minutes for the device to download the folders and headers again. I've gone back to my BB 8700 just so that I get email again. My opinion, if you have cash to burn and like to tinker, get the N900. Otherwise, I recommend waiting till the device works as advertised.

Was on the plane, running music in the background, pdf reader, word to go, and Dr. SNES ( or w/e it's called ), running very smoothly, no issues at all...

Can the FailPhone do that? NO!

i don't think the firmare is going to be the be all and end all software update we all hope it to be, It's going to fix bugs, over missing functionality. No portrait mode in most apps isn't a bug for example.

I agree.. there will be several firmware updates over the lifetime.. that's pretty much guaranteed. This one firmware update will not fix everyone's complaints.

Re: Is The N900 That Great?

As a netbook and media player- nothing touches the N900 in a phone-size form factor. It is KING.

As a phone, I am beginning to despise the N900 due to the continued weak GSM reception in very low signal areas (which is common for Tmo where I live). The signal is great in medium or better signal areas, but is poor everywhere else and takes too long to reacquire a signal.

I now use my N900 as a netbook and media player and went back to my G1 as a phone. I will probably go ahead and get the damn Droid, since Verizon coverage is pure 3G everywhere in my area, rather than one & two bar GSM with the G1 and one or no bars with the N900. Either phone I have poor data connection in many areas. Seems to have gotten worse, rather than better.
