Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

I prefer using swype, compared to the cramp stiff keys of the N900. Using swype to type this post. Seems a resistive screen would be problematic for swype. Perhaps it would work better using the stylus?

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

i was using swype on a resistive screen all day yesterday and had no problems at all, if anything it could work better than on capacitive b/c higher accuracy

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

i thin that any choice is good, some people prefer this and some that. i would like to try out swype, as i heard from friend it's really uncomfortable only on the begining but when u used to it, it rocks

Swype for Symbian why not Maemo/MeeGo

http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian

So dying platform is getting this really nice feature and we dont :(
I think PR 1.2 vkb is just horrible

Ok so anyone knows who should we contact? (council maybe?) to get this thing working on N900

Re: Swype for Symbian why not Maemo/MeeGo

I'm good with being patient and of the opinion that when MeeGo lands, the application written will also work in Maemo 5.

That being said, someone could get an early head start and code one NOW for Maemo and be that much more ready for MeeGo. ;)

Re: Swype for Symbian why not Maemo/MeeGo

Why would you need that when you have such an awesome keyboard?

Inacurate 2010-09-06 08:30

Re: Swype for Symbian why not Maemo/MeeGo

Always better to have more options! :) I'll still use the keyboard 90% of the time, but if Swype worked efficiently enough, I could start using it less personally.

Re: Swype for Symbian why not Maemo/MeeGo

two reasons:
hardware keyboard already present

swype doesnt work so well on resistive

since future meego devices will have capacitive, it will probably be available

Inacurate 2010-09-06 09:22

Re: Swype for Symbian why not Maemo/MeeGo

Nah sayers. :)

Why can't we have both? There is no logical reason to not have both, there really isn't. It's no different than people wanting a portrait VKB or portrait mode at all. We already have landscape, why do we need another option?

If it doesn't work well on resistive screens, it's only because the code wasn't perfected. Just as capable of a screen, since you are holding a finger on it. Needs a little pressure, sure, but just another of the things you pick up with experience and learn to adapt too.

It should be available, eventually. Be interested in seeing how well it works on the N900, since it does have one of the better resistive screens out there.

Re: Swype for Symbian why not Maemo/MeeGo

If you have clicked the link u would saw that Swype is also avaiable for N97 which has a hardware keyborad and resistive screen I think its just Nokia who still experiments to see how it works but little they know that Maemo communty is much more capable and willing to help the'. IMO if they really wanna push it and MeeGo is considered their future high end OS then they are doing it wrong

Re: Swype for Symbian why not Maemo/MeeGo

I would think/hope that we would see swype in MeeGo at some point at least. Samsung and Nokia together invested $5.6 million to swype and while that's not huge amount of cash i'm sure Nokia wants to add it to it's future phones like what Samsung is now doing.

I miss good old HWR. This swype looks to be terribly slow way to input long words. New Zealand guys from Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakit anatahu would go crazy. :D :D

N900 needs it more. Symbian phones at least have T9

Swype works well on the N900 using Nitdroid :)

Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

Is it possible to have Swype - Text Input For Screen in N900?

bunanson 2010-11-02 08:37

Re: Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

Yes. We have been using Swype since 8/2010. Where were you :) ?
Download from market and install. You have to pick the one with correct screen resolution though.

That's in NITDroid, not Maemo.

But he was asking about n900 specificly not the os so bun is right:)

i was asking about Maemo since it is an official OS for N900 & not NITDroid.

Re: Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

Swype is closed source, so you'll have to ask whoever makes it.

droll 2010-11-02 14:48

Re: Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

it may be closed source but the patents by the IBM Almaden researcher is not. the patents detail how the swype algorithm work and would be a good basis for someone to pick up and implement something.

look for patent number 7,251,367 B2, filed Jul 31, 2007 (System and Method for Recognizing Word Patterns Based on a Virtual Keyboard Layout) and 7,453,439 B1, filed Nov 18, 2008 (System and Method for Continuous Stroke Word-Based Text Input).

good luck :)

Re: Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

Nokia IS one of Swype's sponsors though, so I expect to see it in MeeGo, but Maemo wise I'd say perish the thought, Nokia wouldn't do that much for us. :(

ZogG 2010-11-02 14:54

Re: Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

there are several threads on this topic and open tickets on swype website for support. as well there were several small talks of dev in twitter about maemo support, but nothing happened till now, so i would say swype devs don't really care. maybe meego would change the situation

How exactly - its closed source. If the swype team don't provide the source or a port its pretty much a dead issue.

Re: Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

Well we have a hardware keyboard so Swype is not that important but its pretty cool in action, if we didnt have it and this stupid vkb without any letters appearing (as in Opera's kb) than we were screwed :D

droll 2010-11-02 15:31

Re: Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

the vkb is quite useless to me. it has this weird "lag" to it that makes typing fast annoyingly painful.

as an alternative, maybe someone could ask shapewriter inc to do some work for our n900?

richwhite 2010-11-02 15:33

Re: Can we get Swype - Text Input For Screen for N900?

We don't even have a portrait keyboard and people are hopeful for swype?!

Symbian is not dying, Nokia just dragged it all back in house.

I don't disagree that the virtual keyboard is not terribly good, I really do like swype, keep in mind Nokia didn't make it, historically the company that did (swype inc) only ever sold it to manufacturers and carriers, never to end users.

There are a few old threads kicking around in which people have toyed with the idea of replacing the virtual keyboard, but none have really ever progressed very far on the N900 unfortunately.

Who should you contact? The best place you can get answers from is at the source: info@swypeinc.com

Swype does work as a bog standard virtual keyboard, you don't have to drag your finger around making lines - I was skeptical at first, but it is pretty damn nice.

[Maemo 5] [Request] Swype

there is a function on many android phones and some of the nokias(5233 if im not mistaken)

on the virtual keyboard you can drag the stylus on the keyboard and it will recognize what word you are trying to write like a swipe word complete(dont know the technical term for it)

searched the forums and didnt seem to find this particular feature any where..
any chances it could be made available for the N900

thanks

Re: Swipe

+1 for this. i love using it in nitdroid, so fun! :D
its spelt swype by the way, with a y.
but your only option would probably be to email/ask the swype people to port it to maemo.
