I am having exactly the same problem. I would love to have this up and working for me as I don't find Mauku or Witter terribly practical, particularly as Mauku has no way to view searches and the search function on Witter doesn't seem to work for me. Having my searches in my Conversations would be fantastic. If anyone knows how to fix this bug, would be very grateful. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the plug-in several times, rebooted numerous times, waited a bit and tried again, nothing seems to work

Thanks for a great app. I have a suggestion though. When you tweet yourself, the message appears as:

user @user Message text ...

Amongst other things it breaks the twitter plugin on facebook as it does not allow status updates other than original tweets (as from your twitter homepage).

Would it be possible not to prepend the @user to the message text when you tweet yourself, making it behave like a "native update"?

Also, tweeting yourself makes the twet "echo" back to the conversation in the N900. Seems a bit redundant...

ive tried uninstalling any test or dev apps apart from the twitter plugin and still the same.might do a full backup and start fresh to see if that works.

i would love to get this working as id prefer to be using the integrated im/messaging client for everything.

Re: Twitter plugin for N900 Contacts and Conversations

Just some thoughts...

I have installed this app, and while there are bugs, I think the potential is there...

One big feature of Twitter that is missing though, is the Timeline...and I read here this is wanted by many in some form or fashion...

I too wanted this, but having thought about it, having my Timeline implemented into the Convesation app would be to messy, I would be receiving notifications all the time, so it is not pratical...

So I then realized another way of recieving my Timeline...my RSS reader...

I have my RSS reader on my desktop, great little app, keeps me up to date with the latest from my favorite sites...but why not also the latest from Twitter?

Looking on my Twite page, sure enough, enough there is a RSS feed I can view/read and subscribe too for my own Timeline...perfect, or so I thought...

But when I go to save this RSS feed into my N900 RSS reader, it says the address is invalid???
I can go there, I can view it, I can subscribe on the PC...but not on my N900 RSS reader???

I thought this was the perfect solution to his problem...it gets your Twiter Timeline on your desktop, and you recieve all your @, DM's and RT via the Conersation app...

Can someone else try this, see if it works for them...as I would love to get this working.

Re: Twitter plugin for N900 Contacts and Conversations

I have another "problem" with the twitter plugin... It shows every contact i have as online, which is kind of misleading, because it is me actually who's online, not the contacts. I'd rather have no onlinestatus for twitter so the onlinestatus in the adressbook really means the contact is online...
I hope my description is not too weird, it's kinda hard to explain for me.
The second thing i'd really like to see is support for identi.ca which shouldn't be too hard as it uses nearly the same api as twitter...

Thanks for this very useful addition and i look forward to its future.

just to update, i have done a reflash of the firmware and i have the twitter integration working fine now, must have been a conflict with something i had installed from dev or test.

happy days.

I also failed to get my Twitter home timeline with N900 RSS reader. I think the reason is authentication - N900 RSS reader probably doesn't support that.

I have plan to implement home timeline as what search is implemented now. See previous discussion in this thread.

The problem is that Twitter contacts don't have online/offline concepts, but in order to integrate with Contacts and Conversations, this plugin has to implement Twitter as IM which must have online/offline status.

So the answer is that you can't get rid of online status of your Twitter contacts. However, the positive side is that we have plan to make it more reasonable. See http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...9&postcount=29

Re: Twitter plugin for N900 Contacts and Conversations

looking very interesting.

I've had a few trouble with blowing my API limit -- maybe as I was runnign multiple clients. What's the impact of this client on API calls? (I have 700 contacts)

A useful feature might be the ability to:
- somehow not show every contact as online just because a twitter address is configured (I realise this could be tricky as they are kind-of online. Maybe "idle/away" is more true.
- just subscribe to a subset of those you follow, perhaps by use of a twitter list(s)

Hi. The plugin works well, would be great to see a timeline too somewhere.

A problem I've found since installing it is that the screens back lamp seems to come on randomly every now and then. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

i'm new to forum and this is my first message, so if there is more proper place to write in just say me that.

First of all, thanks, it is great app. But i would suggest some improvements. One of the things i don't understand is why some of contacs are shown online with twitter, i don't think it would matter(even if people have some apps keeping them online , cause you turn it and you go away from computer, it still running, and the point of twitter is not to be IM). and also conversation integration is good idea but not that way, it should be used only if there would be ability to make folders their (e.g sms/twitter/facebook) cause for now everying is just messed up together.

Re: Twitter plugin for N900 Contacts and Conversations

Twitter plugin 0.2.0-1maemo2 is available in extras-devel now. New features:

1. Home timeline imported to Contacts. Starting a conversation, you will get your home timeline updates

2. Fixed sign in issue. You don't need to reboot device anymore after installing Twitter plugin. Moreover, account with large following list can be signed in easily now.

3. Added an option to disable importing Twitter friends to Contacts (only search keywords and home timeline will be imported).

Saw the update, downloaded and installed but I can't work out how to get my Timeline to show. Do I just need to enable it in Advanced Settings and then it just appears in Conversations or something more subtle ??

Thanks for the great app, the timeline will make it perfect!

Re: Twitter plugin for N900 Contacts and Conversations

Worked it out .... Timeline: Home is listed as a "Contact" when you go into the New IM section of Conversations. Selecting this will bring up the Timeline and off it goes.

Would it be possible to set the Avatar image in there to the Twitter t ? Might make it easier to find, maybe also adding the twitter account name instead of home would be great for multiple accounts.?

Great Work ! Many Thanks

Echoing Reggie's request from Twitter:

I wish tweets from the Twitter plugin would show that it came from a "Maemo device" or "Nokia N900" rather than just "API"

In short, it's a libpurple plugin that integrates to Maemo platform via Telepathy (http://telepathy.freedesktop.org/wiki/).

So if you want to integrate an IM or social network service to Maemo contacts and conversations, you can either:

1. Write a libpurple plugin, and depend your package to account-plugin-haze (this will install haze plugin when installing your plugin).

2. Write a Telepathy connection manager (in N900, cellular backend, Gtalk, Skype, SIP, etc are all Telepathy connection managers). You can find Telepathy resources from the above link. BTW, you can use Python here, just like butterfly MSN plugin.

Wish these would help :)

Would you please provide more information as to how to do this..

I want to add an existing libpurple plugin - MXit to the N900.....

Maybe the maker of this plugin could edit the API information that comes after you Tweet. On twitter.com it says from API maybe it could be something like "from Nokia N900"

Nota bene: here be dragons. Software in -devel has not been through the quality checks of software in the main Extras repo and may cause unintended problems on your device, even unto rendering it unusable. Do not go there if you are not familiar with the potential issues and confident of being able to resolve them.

Sorry if this seem dense, but I've gone through this thread & obviously something isn't clear to me.

I haven't been a twitter fan up 'til now so am not a all familiar with the service, but after noticing this great app I figured 'd try it out :). I've started following several news tweets, and while I can see recent updates on the web page nothing has come to my phone even though I've entered my account info & my Availability is a green dot. Is this the "issue" that we can't see tweets not addressed specifically to us? TX

generationally 2010-03-25 07:36

Re: Twitter plugin for N900 Contacts and Conversations

In order to receive the tweets as they happen you will have to have your Twitter Timeline contact open.

So open Contacts and find the contact named Timeline. This will open the IM window and it will update and then show the tweets from your Timeline. Keep this IM window open and you will get the new tweets whenever they happen.

This is a rather clever way of doing it. The user then gets to decide whether he wants to be alerted in real time about new tweets or not. This is probably quite useful for those who are following hundreds of Twitter users ;)

Thanks for that. I agree, it works & is very clever. :) I'll try reading news this way for a while instead of through google news & see how it goes.

One "problem" I've noticed is that I'll clear all the messages & the next few updates will only show the new tweets, then all of a sudden I'll get 20 tweets all at once, new ones plus a pile of old. Is that a bug or just "the way it works"?

Like others have posted before me, I'm also having issues signing in. I've installed the plug-in but whenever I go to create a new account, after entering my Twitter username & password, the plug-in just sits there doing nothing...?! Also, when I click on the Advanced tab, there are no settings whatsoever - it's completely blank??!

I don't even get that spinning icon that shows it's trying to sign in.....it literally just does nothing?! I've tried uninstalling & rebooting my device but it's still giving me the same issue....

Shall I just keep trying or is there something else that's stopping it from working...?

Update. It seems that it's not just re-displaying the last 20 when a new post comes in, it's doing it even when there hasn't been anything new since the last update.:confused:

On the first page of this post the Options of the twitter plug-in are explained. It says about one of them:

Quote:

Therefore, whenever a mobile user goes online, he may want to check all replies tweets that were sent to him while he was offline. "Retrieve Tweets History AfterLogin" is for this requirement. By enabling it, this plugin will save a user's state when he goes offline. It can restore the state when the user goes online next time, thus retrieving replies exactly since the last reply he received.
Maybe this has something to do with it. But I don't really understand what that means ;) Also I cannot access the options anymore so I can't really play around with it to see what difference the option makes  Anyway I also sometimes get the old tweets again - somehow it seems to happen whenever the phone temporarily loses connection and gets back online. So it might be a feature or it might be a bug?!

After you open the Conversations app, you select Accounts, select your twitter account & then select Advanced Settings.

I figure it's because I have Autodisconnect installed, so it's effectively logging back in every time. That's just a theory.

I've changed this option back-n-forth several times & don't notice any difference. I have noticed that it seems that old messages are only retrieved when there aren't any new ones. The times when there are new messages it'll only retrieve & report the new one(s).

I had left the timeline contact open overnight & there were over 300 new messages, but I could see that they were the same block of old ones, retrieved over and over again. So it doesn't make a difference if I clear the current messages or not.
