Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

MicroB is vastly superior to Firefox Mobile RC1. IMO the best feature of Firefox is the addon install interface. I tried the Shareaholic addon but I was unable to use it. The button in the main window and the option button in the settings pane don't do anything. I'm a bit disappointed...

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

As a owner of prehistoric N810 I have disagree many of the posters here. RC1 is great! Better in many things than MicroB that N8x0s have in my opinion. Definitely not "firefox rc1 sucks" or "premature ejaculation".

Previous beta was already quite stable in my N810. Cannot say much about the new RC1 after few minutes of browsing. But I can definitely notice the improvements over old version (maybe something to do with JavaScript?). Good work Mozilla team!

Damn.. Didn't think it could be THIS slow :)) Just tried it, played around with it for 5 minutes, time in which I tried installing adblock and subscribing to a list (which I have no idea if it worked), waited for the interface to load and respond and loaded half of a pretty complex page. Uninstalled it, it's not worth keeping in my opinion, like browsing in molasses :).

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

it doesn't really compare to microb. yet. I've chosen mozilla for my computer for its speed and usability; both are now with rc1 far beneath my expectation

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

Is it optified (beta 5) ? Coz i have just like 23Mb free on rootfs...

By the way...as much as i like Firefox on PC...i have to say that this mobile version so far sucks... and it's beta 5 lol...they have a long way to go to make it even comparable to MicroB...

At the current speed, I highly doubt the Mozilla browser can really much up with the speed of MicroB browser. Premature ejaculation.

It also appears that the Mozilla folks don't know how to run a repository properly, otherwise we'd be getting update notifications.

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

I have no interest in trying out a beta browser because MicroB does everything i want it to, but for a completely free piece of software some of you are being pretty rude, tasteless, and vulgar...

On a completely unrelated note, there was a free trial of Wifi on my flight last week, and i was IMing my friends with my brand new phone from 30k feet. My status was set to "sitting in a chair in the sky". It was so amazing.

For free software community feedback is a good thing. The entire point of releasing betas is to find out how they fare in real use. If you're not even going to test the thing you're contributing nothing at all.

Nor do i moan and whine about things i'm not willing to help with. I have three separate port projects for Fremantle to keep me busy, thanks.

It's more the maturity level of the feedback and quality of the testing reports that i'm pointing out. "It sucks." isn't helping anybody make it any better. The adolescent references to sexual dysfunction are just juvenile on top of that.

I suspect posting the feedback in a coherent form here would probably be more useful.

I really like Fx 3.5 even it is not the fastest browser for windows.

But Fennec is definitely too slow! The only benefit is the possibility of using Weave...

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

yes..its too slow. i prefer microb. it is 10 times faster than fennec.

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

Performance of Firefox 1.06bpre improved significantly with firmware 2.2009.51-1, to almost (but not quite) MicroB levels.

However this 1.0rc1 release is a step backwards in terms of stability, and it's integration with the virtual keyboard is woeful (so bad I wonder if anyone even bothered testing with the keyboard closed). Accessing bookmarks when the hardware keyboard is closed is a complete pain.

Performance of the rc1 has improved slightly over 1.0b6pre, but this is nowhere near ready for release.

Other than plugins/addons, I really can't see what this has going for it on the N900.

Is that one "IP based"? I used the "Near Me" plugin, and its exactly the kind of app I was looking for (to replace Windows Mobile "Live Search"), but it doesn't seem to have much "range". Only finds (4) pizza places "near my address", and none of the big chains (Pizza Hut, Dominoes). Doesn't seem to be a way to "expand" the search area or return "more than (5) results.

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

Posting with rc1 version. I am a die hard firefox fan and I thought this version runs better than the previous one. still not as fast as microB tho. ONE annoying thing I encounter was the amount of accidental opening of links when I am scrolling up and down. It's either too sensitive or wrong in some way. Opening firefox and getting to this post to create this reply alone had me closing about 5 unwanted tabs.

I like the addons but at the moment, I want speed and usability instead of feature. I totally understand mozilla's aim to keeping fennec faithful to firefox but this is mobile browser, not desktop.

It could be IP based. I've only tried it with my Verizon DSL service, I'll hop onto TMobile and see if it puts me in Kansas like Speedtest does.

Edit: Hmm doesn't work at all with the TMobile internet. I'll disable this and try out Near Me.

Edit: Going to Flickr and using their location also puts me in Texas.

o.O

Fennec is slow, unresponsvive, no zoom

Why firefox why?

anapospastos 2010-01-01 21:17

Double tap for zoom. No circular zoom like on MicroB.

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

I have to agree - I will happily sacrifice a little speed for a better feature set - but the latest release is beyond slow. Sometimes taking 10x as long to render a page as MicroB.

While I appreciate what firefox is trying to do with the added functionality - they cannot lose sight of the fact that the primary duty of a browser is to view web pages.

To all the people groaning about firefox/fennec, you do realize that microb is built upon them, don't you? It is using xulrunner which is from the firefox/mozilla project.

i"m with you on this it's needs more work have you seen how it works with youtube i'm just and end user, so i'm sure a lot was put into it but compared to the rest of microB out man o man its not looking good as far as user friendly, wonder what those guys over at firefox are doing during work hours :)

Yes, and while they share a lot of common code there are also obvious differences (in particular, the UI) which result in MicroB giving the superior browsing experience.

Obviously Firefox has a newer build of gecko than MicroB, which may explain the increased instability of Firefox. I had Firefox 1.0rc1 close with no warning about 5 times in 15 minutes, whereas MicroB has never done that to me in 4 weeks. In fact, 1.0b6pre was more stable than 1.0rc1.

Nokia have done a much better job with MicroB than Mozilla have done with Firefox. Period.

Can't tell (much) and I have no idea when it will be out (when it's ready, I guess).

Have a look in Bugzilla to find out what bugs are fixed in version "5.0+"... battery life is significantly improved though, which is great.

There is no additional functionality in this "preview" release, just core bug fixes. Hopefully the public release will include new functionality (in particular portrait mode etc.).

Okay but this device is one and far as I know the only one with this browser, We would expect the best from it you can lie and say it function like you hope it would. There's a lot of other device no way as advance as the n900 and everything about it should carry the same Reputation great powerful and reliable, Lets raise the bar, this isnt the n800,even our beta should be the best.I know I'm talking alot of sh*t for a guy who dont develop or write codes, but come on I would love the n900 to make its name in the end user best device list, it cant be the best just for power users

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

Hm, I read a lot of critical words in this thread. Firefox for maemo5 is not in a final state but it's significant improved. My impressions:

+ scrolling is nearly as smooth as it is in microb if the a site is rendered completely
+ featured extensions are working fine.
+ AdblockPlus works without complaint and is configurable in the same way as it does in the desktop version
+ youtube works fine

- Initial start takes more than 10 seconds - that's the most annoying thing for me
- If AdblockPlus is activated it takes some extra seconds
- scrolling stumbles if site is not rendered completely
- On screen keyboard does not work correctly - this was better in older releases, as Milhouse already wrote

I think the line there is IF its rendered completely. Just a couple of test I did on pages I often go to. All tests done over wifi.

Slashdot.org

MicroB: 15 seconds to render entire page
Fennec; 40 seconds

Engadget.com

MicroB: 18 seconds
Fennec: 2+ minutes - I gave up.

Add to that the fact that I can scroll the loaded content as it loads on Micro B and you have a far better experience with it over fennec.

Also I havent had any issues with adblock on MicroB. Perhaps just lucky.

Re: Firefox Browser is out!!!!

Hmmm.. Installed Firefox and weaver and adblock. I installes fennec befoe on my N810. My secret phrase was again??? Took me a lot of time in trial and error. Not very 'intuitive' there. That's no problem, but the usage of the browser is: the loading time for each new page is not appropriate for me. MicroB got me spoiled apparantly. I saw some results form syncing Weaver with my desktop, it seems to work, at least in a way.. But using firefox? Crome on my PC is way faster IMO. Moreover, MicroB started to slow down as well!! Memory problems? I un-installed ff mobile, rebooted and MicroB is back to normal. Sorry I'll just stay with MicroB again...

[iīm using n900]
I donīt understand people praising MicroB speed. In my opinion itīs quite slow. It shouldnīt take more than ~5s to load for example slashdot.org.

btw.
Why it feels that scrolling and overall responsivness in microb (when page is loaded) is faster than scrolling in menus, pictures, desktops etc. When scrolling imagelist with thumbnails I can see tearing and its bit jerky.

..edit
Sorry for offtopic.

Um it takes me 6 seconds to load slashdot from pressing enter using firefox on my Quad Core desktop with 4gb RAM. So expecting Microb to do it in 5 seconds is a bit much dont you think?

Even Google Latitude reports me in Texas. o.O. Makes me think it's a problem with Fennec itself.

Something wrong with your computer? With my pentium 1,5Ghz 512mb after getting connection to page it takes about 1-3 seconds to render. Using windows xp sp3 and firefox 3.5.6

No it's not too much.

Takes me 3 seconds (or rather 3 Mississippi) on a Dual Core system with 1 GB of RAM (running latest 32 bit Ubuntu and a nightly build of Firefox).

It's probably more dependent on your internet connection if anything. Verizon DSL here.

I test from the moment I hit enter - not when the connection is established as the creation of the tab etc I consider part of rendering.

With Near Me, I drag my finger from dead area of the 900, on the "right", onto active area of the screen. This pulls up the menu bar, where Near Me has an icon (picture of the little house above the "settings" button)...click on it, and its "interface" opens. You can click on the preset searches "coffee, pizza, libraries, etc", or just type in your own.

You may be getting location wrong via "IP" becuase it seems like T-Mo has regional APNs. Internet2.voicestream.com has me making "speedtests" somewhere in Kansas. epc.tmobile.com gets closer, but its somewhere in New Jersey...I'm in Maryland.
