For the guys trying with Win7: have you tried to enable XP compatibility mode? If I remember correctly you'd need to right click on the mapload application icon and (under properties / compatibility) check and enable "run this program in compatibility mode for Win XP".

Somebody try and report back?

I have tried that in Vista 32-bit. Does not help. Nokia Map Loader can't find my N900. And I have used the map application on the N900 before.

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader

I can hereby confirm that Nokia Map Loader works with the N900 using Windows XP 32-bit. And that it does not work when using Windows Vista 32-bit.

I can also confirm that bunanson step by step guide is correct.

The Nokia Map Loader can be downloaded here:
http://europe.nokia.com/support/prod...d#/nokia-n900/

Also, there is no need to have installed or install Ovi Suite or PC Suite. The Nokia Map Loader will be sufficient.

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader

For those that don't have access to a computer booting Windows, I managed to make it work (or at least to make it seem to work) in XP 64-bit under QEMU.

I have to say that I did not finish the download (it was taking too long and I had to vacate the computer), and I ended up downloading the maps in a Windows computer at work, so YMMV. But I see no reason for it not to work. :-)

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader

I can confirm that bunason step by step guide is correct and Ulrik's post - YES, it will work on a XP machine, Service pack 2 machine. PC Suite is not required. I used an old Dell laptop with XP home edition, put SP2 with .NET. Loaded Nokia Map Loader fine and all steps work. I suspect it is due to the XP SP2 OS

It does NOT work on a MacBook running Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit even if you use the compatibility set to XP Service Pack 2 for the Nokia Maps Loader.

Hope this helps.....

It took me half an hour, OMG, how to creat landmark on Ovi maps, 1.01 (after PR1.1), with internet connection

Right lower corner arrow>Places>any business (for e.g. pizza city state) and click the icon i > return to your map. You just created a POI/landmark of that place, it stays even if you close and reopen Ovi maps

Yes, works only with business with the icon 'i'.

To create a landmark of your home address?
1) use the above method ONLY if you home address is a business
2) find any business, restaurant or anything next to your home, and mark it. DUH, you just created a landmark for your home address

Pic posted: click the blue icon will create a POI/landmark that Ovi maps will remember for the next time.

Watch: I have yet to figure out how to delete them, so, dont create too much till you find a way to remove them. Yike!

Who said Ovi maps is useless. :D

I live too far from GA :D ... btw what is the advantage of installing the maps? besides offline navigation?

1) World map is all with you, preloaded in your N900, do what you want. Say cant go to hochiming city for pho, you can always look at it and salivate with your eyes closed, just an example.

2) Planning between trips, again, the whole world map is in your N900, offline planning is convenient

3) Online search for some "pho" in a new city, say charlotte NC when drive by, just to check how much detour I have to go in order to get there before the restaurant closed, sure it comes with phone number that you can call and plead "I am only 5 miles from your restaurant and we are very hungry, my little kid would go banana without some "pho" tonight, please ... we will try to get there very fast." It happens to me for every single trip!

4) Locate yourself and orientation as well as tracking. This N900 does very well.

5) Need to go to a wedding in IOWA a couple month from now, has NO squat idea which airport to take....

Sure, you can always argue to do this with your 2 lb netbook or something like that, but you can beat a N900 sitting at the back of a car/plane with only so much space without bumping into your neighbor's ?

number 3) is my MUST HAVE and tracking on hiking is also a fascinating experience. Would you agree?

Not working on Windows 7 (32 bit). Not even in compatibility mode. Installation on Windows XP (32 bit) was fast and trouble-free though.

You should be able to "navigate" around without any internet connection if you already have the appropriate maps installed, however, voice navigation on ovi map is still not available for n900, so it's pretty much useless at the moment.

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader

i got a question:
dies ovi maps route you as you drive or go?
i played around wth it and when i entered my location (or rather let the gps recognize where i am) and the destination i wanted to go to, it wasnt starting any routing (ie a voive telling i have to turn left in 200 meters or so)

i just could look at a text list that told me step for step what to do. but thats really not useful if you're driving, i could just as well print out a description then.

can you use ovi maps to actively route?

Yes, it painted a red thick route for you to follow, as long as your tracking red dot is on the route, you are on the right tract, literally. No, voice to voice turn by turn is not there yet.

Since I am here, let me say something about this thread. I post this thread by no mean I am saying Ovi maps is the best thing in the world or is a top rate finished product GPS. My philosophy, if you already own the device, may as well 'learn' how to make it work. To keep saying Ovi maps is useless is NOT going to get you anywhere. Please do not get irate/upset, it is my way of looking at this world, ABSOLUTELY not direct to any particular posting.

On Windows 7, you can use the virtual OS program "XP Mode" (Available from microsoft website). Thats the only way.

I found this out as well - I was thinking Wow, OVI maps actually does do turn-by-turn tracking, what are all these guys talking about when they say it doesn't???....until I took a wrong turn!

The OVI map software doesn't really seem to care if you don't follow the route it tells you to and it doesn't go about trying to compute an alternative route once you stray off. This is really too bad since it seems it wouldn't take much programming to just have it recompute a new route automatically once your actual GPS coordinates are a certain distance away from the planned route.
I don't consider voice directions very important but certainly telling you how to "get back on track" once you deviate from your planned route is critical. Maybe next version...

Would be nice to check if a Windows 32 bit, running on top of a Linux 64 bit system with VirtualBox, could be used with Map Loader? If that Windows installation would recognize, and more importantly, install the maps.

This is regarding the problem of getting the n900 to work with map loader in win 7. I'm running win 7 64-bit and and been fooling about with the .qt file sitting on the n900's flash memory. Not sure if anything works yet but would appreciate some help from everyone verifying what is going on. My posts are here:

It took a few tries to work on mine. Make sure you're connecting in mass storage modes, and that the virtual drive(s) are showing up in explorer (one for MyDocs and one for the memory card). Also make sure you have at least version 3.0.28.0 of the map loader.

this changes nothing for me, i still get waiting for phone, tried every possible combination of connecting and all the suggestions in this thread and many others, nokia map loader just dont work with my n900 on vista32, but it does with my n97, ive actually got all the map data on my n900 just copied the cities folder from n97 to n900, but id rather maploader did it, as the maps app keeps giving me 'cant download data' warnings, when it dont need to download any data, cos the map is already displayed on my screen?
and ive got no voice directions, ill dump it for sygic when that is ready for release, due to the nightmare ive had with n900/maploader
