Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

- facebook and twitter application. Nokia should build one for the N900. They must
- Portrait keyboard with T9
- Swype
- Ovi Maps, something as good as Ovi Maps 3
- Media player - I have over 2000 songs, when I click shuffle, it starts after 10 seconds, i click videos and the videos load after a minute, and it takes like another 10 seconds for a video to start. This isn't acceptable if a cellphone claims to be media powerhouse
- random restarts. They have to stop.

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

Same version of ovimaps that symbian just got.
mms

And flash 10.1 with the hardware acceleration that it is supposed to have.

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

1. when scrolling any list, it sometimes selects the item on the screen rather than scroll. it should not highlight the item when scrolling. scroll without highlight.
2. better media player. Many useful features from n95 can be copied.
3. music sync feature with WMP or any other supporting player
4. navigation with ovi maps
5. portrait mode
6. 2 way sync support for google/ pc suite
7. MFE working with google
8. table clock mode/ any app with cool clock
9. full screen youtube videos (real full screen)
10. better phone app

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

I'd like to see the PIM/PDA/Phone features take a huge step towards being serious business apps instead of "touch" toys. Sorry for the nasty tone, but I bought the N900 thinking and hoping that for the price and given the platform OS and the general state of the art (Palm, Blackberry, WinMo,etc.), it would be a serious business tool. But so far, it is a disappointing mess.

There are many large and small examples of this:

- I have over 3000 contacts on the N900 and performance in the Contacts app is very slow. I had pretty much the same contact list in my old Palm III and it performed a lot faster. Part of the problem is the N900 tries to search while you're entering the search key, which means you don't even see what you typed until AFTER it finds the search results. This maybe cool for small numbers of contacts, it's royal pain when you have 3000.

- no global searching / sorting through tasks, notes, calendar. I have over 200 notes in the N900 (synced from Outlook) and the only way I can find things is to scroll them serially. That's just terrible design.

- no categories.

- cannot edit a contact from the call history. I have to leave the Phone app and start the Contacts app, refind the contact, make the change.

- no idea what number the caller called you with, so you can call back at the same number

- Outlook to N900 syncing through Nokia PC Suite stops working when the database gets large like mine.

- Calendar doesn't support very common, but albet complex repeats, like 4th Tuesday of every month.

- when setting a date, the device doesn't even display the day of week for you or a mini-calendar selector. Just some silly odometer-style touch wheels.

I could go on, but the point is the built-in PIM/PDA/Phone suite is not ready for business users. Many of my complaints have been filed as bugs or enhancement requests by myself and others, but I'm not confident the built-in PIM/PDA/Phone package can be "bug fixed" into shape or if Nokia is motivated to make a truly killer business app.

So I'm looking for a competitive package I can load on the N900 to replace the built-in package. Does anyone know of one?

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

1/ MMS
2/ txt2speech ... mostly speaking out the name of people ringing you (I luv that feature on S60)
3/ Flash 10
4/ Free OVI Maps navigation
5/ 3G and SIP Video Calls
6/ MSN/Live Messenger latest protocol (allows to be signed in in several places)
7/ T9 keyb + portrait mode in conversations
8/ Lock ur N900 with a specific SMS like S60 can do ... nice feature if phone got stolen
9/ Native Google Maps application ... but that's something google will have to do.
10/ Chose ringtones for specific callers

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

My wishlist, in no particular order:

1. Better PIM capabilities. The calendar that comes with the N900 is a joke.

2. Syncing of calendar and contacts with a local Linux box

3. Better GPS. It is off by a hundred meters.

4. Repair of the blue haze problem, possibly by issuing a different battery cover.

5. Handsfree dialing.

6. A commitment of Nokia to repair hardware problems that stem from faulty design (I worry about the usb connector).

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

Some stuff I can think of right now:
1. Media player with more features. (Equalizer is a must, both presets and custom)
2. Customizable launcher menu. Creating folders, rearranging icons etc.
3. Auto sort, snap to grid, variable size shortcut icons for the desktop.
4. Able to drag vertical scroll bar instead of "only" kinetic scrolling.
5. Able to control CPU speed. (Auto, 75, 125, 250mhz etc. Extend runtime at cost of speed)

CormacB 2010-01-25 13:48

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

1. Email client which can display most emails, or at least have a switch for plain text view
2. Better media player including:
a. proper support for WMA tags
b. group albums by album artist not artist
c. lower CPU usage
3. Flash 10
4. Various DNS fixes
5. Send/receive files via IM

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

All n1ce to have stuff:
Media Player: Auto-resume, pitch, shownexttrack, folder browsing, id3-edit
Headset: Music control buttons for wired headdsets
Hildon: (coloured) IconSets, menuui (entries and descriptions)
Maemo: change partitioning or use ~/.local instead of /usr for installations
Drivers: GLes-Wrapper for Open GL
to be continued...

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

The should fix following email/contact sync issues with exchange/google.
1. On Gmail email client : give option to download xxx messages.
Currently it tries to download the all the gmail message thereby slowing down the email considerably
2. Enterprise exchange: They should support server provisioning request such as device lock request from the server admin. It works on 5800 music phone but their star smart phone lacks the server provisioning request. A glaring omission.
Fix all the sync issues.
3. iSync plug in for mac
2. Search in email or entire N900.
4. Native Cisco IPsec VPN client just like iphone.

They fixed that in PR1.1.

Also, I don't want most of what you (all) want. I want my voice-over-ringtone so I know whether the take my phone out or not. Such a simple feature. Replaces ringtones for contacts IMO.

And a friend of mine desperately wants to edit a spreadsheet.

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

:o you really think there will be a new update?

Ok, my girlfriend wants selectable ringtones for every contact she chooses. Yes when i got the N900 i could not stop her.

I remember a story on Maemo.org frontpage the day after 51-1 update it was brilliant about how Nokia decided to open OVI Store and bla bla.... anyone that think the Ovi Store is brilliant now ? Anyone from Nokia have any info on what is going on? There must be a gasillion bugs filed by now.

at least ALL functionality of Nokia 5800 Express Music AND MORE OF COURSE.

- Video calling
- Voice command
- Hand write recognition
- No lag while you run and switch between apps
- Native/OS portraid/landscape mode
- ...

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

The issues I would like resolved, whether in the next update or later, are:

1. Auto connect/disconnect to wifi/3g/edge. Would be nice if it could download email and disconnect automatically like S60. I think there was a workaround script somewhere though...

2. Web browser tweaks:
a. Full screen mode shows forward and back buttons.
b. Ability to disable history mode for back button (or perhaps tapping would do a quick back whereas holding it would show the selectable history?).
c. A button for quicker access to create a new window.

3. Portrait mode.

Arif 2010-01-26 20:41

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

Support wired remote controls (The N95 8GB remote for example)
Portrait mode in AT LEAST the media player
Better Media Player (Stereo widening, loudness, EQ, and whatnot)
A menu where you can make folders & move the icons around
....I don't want much do I :p

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

Hello to Everybody !

Many of the things listed here are all very important.
I'm really thinking if switch to N900 as my primary phone because of many of the issue/lack of functions listed in this thread.

I wrote only the most important:
1) REAL DECENT PIM apps: Modest email and Calendar are really too...modest! . For business it would be nice to have GTD functions, but at least we need serious calendar and email functionality

2) Portrait mode for SMS with T9 support (you don't need a real full keyboard..just give us T9 !! Sometime it is much better than full keyboard)

3) Phone app with much more functions than actual (seach, filters, etc etc)

4) Full MFE functionality without bugs (like the one in 2003 calendar sync even with PR 1.1)

5) Local search in all the phone contents (contacts, email, calendar, notes ect)

6) better Bluetooth functions for the car system integration

I can go on with much more..but they are already listed and I would like to see these functions implemented as soon as possible and not in Maemo 6 !

We'll see...

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

just one thing : Better MfE support

Meaning :
- be able to use MfE even if corporate locks are required
- handle meeting requests
- better integration of corporate phonebook

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

Off the top, so I'm probably leaving out my most wanted...

) Ability to delete .mp3 file (& remove from gPodder?) from Media Player App

) Ability to return to Player app (W/ controls) after hitting "Back" button to see playlist

) Personalized Ring Tones

) Speak (Text2Speech) name of incoming caller

) Full Call Log (e.g. when did someone start calling me and how many missed calls am I getting in trouble for?)

) <Shift><Rub> should be <Del>

et cetera ....

RWFarley 2010-01-26 21:25

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

... one more

) short (e.g. 5 sec.) forward/backward in Media Player.
If you can navigate to less than 5 minutes of what you want in a 90 minute podcast, you've a steadier finger than I.

bonerp 2010-01-26 21:30

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

Personalised profiles - can't believe this still isn't available.

Portrait SMS

Portrait Browser

Auto disconnect 3g/internet connection

Better media player options with sound off when disconnecting headphones

More integrated SMS with auto connect of MMS APN

Improvements to battery management - still

Would be nice to see some more games to show off the capabilities.

Improve the phone capability

Voice control and voice calling

Text to speech and speech to text

Ability to save my contacts on the N900 to my sim card!

OranAgra 2010-01-26 21:51

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

  1. being able to connect to both 3g internet and WiFi at the same time (i want to use 3d internet, and access LAN computers shares samba / VNC)
  2. be able to disable alarm clock vibration
  3. also being able to specify the audio and vibration of an incoming message
  4. also, when defining alarms and such, it should be also possible to enter the details (e.g. time) with a t9 style entry field (like in s40), instead of many scrolling lists (takes longer time)
  5. i think there should have been a built in countdown timer
  6. video calls (both 3G, and Skype)
  7. group messaging (skype and other supporting protocols and maybe even sms)
  8. samba / ftp / zip file support in the built in file manager
  9. improve performance of Youtube inside MicroB (or any flash file playing)
  10. specifying contact groups with different ring-tones
  11. it happens to me a lot that in the browser i click a link by mistake, then when trying to go back to where i was it takes a long time (first seeing the list of pages in the history, then clicking and reloading the last page), i wish there was a faster way to go back one step
  12. built in java / midp support
  13. flash 10
  14. more codecs in the built in movie player (e.g. mov files)
  15. more built in IM protocols
  16. being able to copy text from an email
  17. see what is the current battery charge level while charging

SilverX 2010-01-27 05:24

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

another one ... long press a key should give the 2ndary character of they key.
I know there's auto repeat now for long press ... maybe some people think that's useful ... so for those it would be nice to have an option somewhere in the settings to chose if long press should auto-repeat or give the 2ndary character of the key.

has there been any mention of upcoming firmware? or at least any more bug fixes being released in near future???

venusrising 2010-01-28 09:43

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

1. PLEASE-support for wav gsm 6.10 codec.. Cannot access our vm attacments that are emailed OR via web as maemo or fennec browsers cannot open file either.
Many VOIPs use this old standard like ringcentral.com etc. they do not offer mp3 format like many others.

2. No Logmein.com support yet for N900 and support say they have no plans yes so cannot access my remote xp desktop. VNC work but like logmein.

3. Ability to edit word excel and pdf docs like on my dash. Why didn't DataViz do a premium version for this beauty.

4. Native MMS already. this is still popular feature in the states. using FMMS in meantime but really miss contact integration.

5. N900 does not read outlook ext # field so is says invalid number. workaround for now was to remove X and just ram # at end a glance before you dial to see it.

6..Did I mention more wav support.

7. bluetooth keyboard support missing is nuts for such a mini
computer. I have enabled HID in config can pair but no input ever occurs. will try chinook from threads to see if this works.

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

I would like the ability to choose where I want the portait mode. I'd like to be able to sent sms that way, I'd like to call that way. That's it. The n900 is too good in landscape for me to want it to flip to portait each time i wobble it a little.

[DarkGUNMAN] 2010-01-28 10:52

Re: What would you like to see in the next update?

Java (J2RE / J2ME) to expand the app capability of the device. eg Opera Mini

Persistent web cache in the web browser available after the browser has been closed and restarted, so regular pages don't take up unnecessary bandwidth downloading images again. Useful for people on a limited bandwidth mobile tarriff.

Quick option in web browser to enable / cache / disable images.

Theme Edior / manager to allow easier changes to system icons, colour schemes and fonts/font sizes. this is especially useful in relation to apps which need a smaller font to make better use of the desktop space (ftp / irc). Maybe even allow changes to the size of the window title bars allowing for scalable icons

Portrait mode optional. I know some apps are hard coded as portrait, but system views could be supported. Only issue i could see is that each desktop would need another layout saved for the position of the widgets in portrait mode

The purpose of theme edting and portrait mode is to let people optimise their experience. For example switch between primarily one-handed with thumb operation if they are on the move (larger icons / fonts) and two-handed / desktop operation with stylus (smaller fonts / icons). Or through TVOut (even smaller fonts / icons / windows).
All of this to customise the experience based on what they are doing and what the needs are at time, all of which could be achieved through customisable themes on the device.
Three main layouts for casual / non-power users, but all customisable for power users to save as separate themes.

'ld love to see portrait for music player and texting even if the keyboard was in numeric format instead of qwerty for texting still be great! and also the SES (System Event Scheduler) not destroy my battery usage!! Oh and an easier way to get album art for the media player I hate no album art!
