Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
No problems with both of the updates over the air. All stayed like they where before update and i got the goodies from the update :)
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
i also used OTA, no problems at all
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Everything went very smoothly here using OTA.
When I first tried to install it said that I didn't have enough free space, so I deleted some apps that I had downloaded from testing, cleaned my apt archives and removed orphaned deps. After that, I was able to install fine. It took about a half-hour, with the only oddity being that the window manager crashed somepoint during the update, but I could still see the progress bar :) After a couple automatic shutdowns, everything was working great. All settings + apps remained :) |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
I had 45MB free rootfs initially, and OTA told me to use the pc suit. I started deleting apps starting with the big ones like the ones from OVI. Got to 55MB still no joy. Started to delete the small stuff , lots from Extras Development. I must have cleared out a problemmatic package at some point, cause it then gave me the all clear and went in like a dream over WIFI.
It has kep all my settings, and I have not needed to use my backup. I have since re-installed updated dev packages for Qt and Python, as one of the major changes was a move fromQt4 to Qt4.5 |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Very reassuring to hear that OTA seems to work and that most of the catastrophic cases are due to NSU. However, I read so many posts elsewhere reporting problems with WiFi having become less reliable that I'm somewhat scared off as this is my main internet connection. I'm not referring to the vpnc problems, but the changes in the WLAN itself, which seems to have been trimmed towards more aggressive power saving. Nobody in this thread mentioned any problem with that, though. One feature that one seems to have to accept is that the sshd server becomes inaccessible from the outside (e.g. a laptop) after a few minutes of idleness, which is perhaps only an inconvenience to a minority. Other than that, everybody in this thread happy with WLAN connectivity in PR1.1?
I'm now reconsidering my strategy of waiting a bit more, for I noticed that since PR1.1 came out, OVI store is again closed for me. Not that I really need it, but those little gadgets like the anglemeter are just cute! |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
OTA (using WiFi) - all good for me. I forgot to do a backup before, and the update prompted me to do one. I did, haven't needed to restore. Everything remained in place.
I did the python cleanup (installing the new 'optified' version) prior to the update. That's the only precaution I took. All the apps I've installed are all still in place. Videos I've played picked up where I left off in them. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
OTA worked for me just fine.
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
OTA for both firmwares, not had a prob, updating to PR1.1 was easy and took around 10 - 15 mins, got no problems using the device after the update, loving my n900.
Apps i had installed as i did the OTA update: Adblockplus, Custom operator name widget, MSN protocol plugin, OpenSSH Server, Personal IP address, Petrovich, Simple brightness applet, Unzip add-on for file manager. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
OTA, have all kind of apps installed (no un-optified), no problems at all.
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Had to flash. Tried OTA but I got the suggestion to flash. So I uninstalled some programs, to no avail. I did a backup and tried apt-get which didn't work so well. So I just decided to flash. Did it at friends place with a Vista (32) machine with NSU. Restored, no prob whatsoever. Total success, the restore also successfully offered to reinstall all my pre-flash programs, so I did that too. The backup also had my settings so afterwards everything looked exactly as before.

Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
I had one :)
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
HAM wouldn't update requiring a USB and some software which wouldn't run on linux anyway... so i did some apt-get upgrade and apt-get -f install and dpkg --configure -a and optified a few folders during the operating to free some space on / ...
After that it rebooted, upgraded and worked fine, nothing was lost... (With lots of extras testing/devels too) |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Problem free OTA while waiting in a airport on 3,5G.
A coupple of apps installed, nothing from dev tough. Everything went fine and i connected and synced Mail for exchagne just before boarding :) |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
OTA over 2.5g, no problems what so ever. Lot's of apps installed both from extras, ovi and devel.
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
I updated over wifi @ ~15mbps. I did a backup because I thought I might lose some settings but everything went smoothly.
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
via apt-get @xterm, ran out of memory but got over it with reboot and continued updating and everything works perfectly.
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Eveything went almost fine. Have to do couple of reboots before i got rid of jerkyness. Now its faster than before but off course lots of stuff to fix even after this update :)
Why you didnt put poll? |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
i just updated and it went smooth as a** , At 1st i didnt plan on it, until i turn away from all the bad post even mines, just from reading all the fallen newbie but after taking to RevdKathy she gave me a few tips, Now Os is a lot better so far not one bug ,slug or roach..
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Absolutely no problems here at all. N900 works better and is smoother after the update, I highly recommend it!
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
I saw all the complaints about un optified apps filling up the root directory so I avoided installing anything that was not available on the regular repos until the smoke cleared and we got our first FW update.
Now with latest update I am getting no more re boots. I am happy and grateful we are using an open OS. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
No problems with OTA-Update here, though I am having testing and devel repos enabled and some programs from there installed.
Worked like a charm :) |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Everything went very smoothly- Can't wait to see what the next fw update brings.
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
mine worked perfectly, done via app manager
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
You can read detailed `story` on my update HERE
As for the apps I had, given that I had the device less than 3 days prior the update I didn't have lots of them, at least not problematic ones, only the essentials (for me). The list is: 3G/2G Mode Selection Applet, Bounce Evolution, Cellular Modem Control Buttons, Decoders Support, DOSBox, FM Radio Player, GUI frontend for rsync, load-applet, Mirror, Ogg Support, OpenSSH Client and Server, Personal Dataplan Monitor, Personal IP Address, Petrovich, Pidgin Extra Protocols (Bonjour and Sametime), Pidgin protocols plugin for Conversations and Contacts, Recorder, rootsh, Simple Brightness Applet, SuperTux, vim, vncviewer. I think I had also AdBlock Plus installed, but it was somewhat quirky so I removed it... Which caused my only problem so far, although I think it's more due to the microB itself, than the update - it wouldn't go away from my Addons panel, and even when I did override of it with 1.1 version from HERE it was still showing as 1.0.2 (if I remember correctly) and for some reason it didn't allow me to subscribe to a filter list. I tried to clean it up but it kept poping out from somewhere, even tho ~/.mozilla/microb had no mention of it (true, I forgot to look into prefs.js). So I removed the whole microb folder and let it rebuild (I had to reboot tho, microB was bragging about some session stuff and such). After that I had a little problem that almost made me write a bug report - it wouldn't remember typed links and didn't offer me autocomplete, but it fixed itself after 10 or so minutes. Then I installed AdBlock Plus 1.1 and everything is working fine now. Well, maybe a bit slower (I get far more `grid` render and ghost rendering on pages than before), but I think it's due to AdBlock Plus and not microB itself. The only other thing that I noticed, although it might be purely subjective opinion, is that video player is a bit `jerkier` - before the update it was working butter-smooth, now I have an occasional jitter, but it happens quite rarely and I might just have not noticed it earlier. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Yep, installed OTA and updated itself without fuss. Remarkable, really.
My first update download corrupted itself but Application Manager re-downloaded the bits missing, and I had to optify Python and remove some apps to free up space (though that's my fault for being a nosey developer and checking them all out :)) |

Then make sure you have enough rootfs, and you should be good to go. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
OTA over WiFi went without any problems on my N900 with lots of applications installed (from OVI, extras, and extras-testing).
I had only 40 MB free on rootfs, but this was enough. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Didn't work out here. I was optimistic because the previous mini-upgrade worked.
At first it appeared to have worked, as it went through the motions and then rebooted. It was suspiciously fast though, from what I'm familiar with from normal Debian upgrades with that amount of download. But it looked OK, until I tried to connect to wi-fi. It associated to the AP but never finished (never timed out), didn't go through the DHCP phase. I switched to 3G, which worked, and visited the app manager again. Pressed update. It again showed a Maemo 5 upgrade, this time a bit smaller. I hit it. It went through the motions again, rebooted. I visited the app manager again, it _still_ showed the Maemo 5 update. This time only 21KB though. When I hit it it told me I would have to flash. And sure enough, shortly after the device complained about read-only filesystems, and 'dmesg' showed ubifs errors. And then it died. Now I'm stuck because tablets-dev.nokia.com is down. I shouldn't have been that optimistic, the right way would have been to get hold of the firmware image and flasher in advance, to be prepared for the worst, before attempting the app manager upgrade. Argh. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
I HAVE nokia applications
nokia system software updates and ovi |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Just did an OTA update; media player and streaming works as it did before the update, no problems with wi-fi as well.
I'm still observing battery life, but seems the same as before the update as well. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
no problems here. in fact i think it helped me quite a bit.
updated in the okinawa airport (terrible idea, i know -but i couldnt wait!) and i think the battery is a bit better. on the way to okinawa i watched three eps of Nip/Tuck and i had to turn the n900 off to conserve battery for when i arrived. on the way back home, i watched FOUR episodes and i still had over 50% battery remaining. oh, mscim is a little weird now. it doesnt show the input method when you type kana, but if i press spacebar the kana appears in the text input box anyway. |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Perfect update....via Flasher for Mac....took 20 seconds and worked perfectly.
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
Did the two firmware updates via OTA, no problem at all. All my previous apps, settings, contacts, calendars, etc, are all there. Working normally as usual. Hoping to see more firmware updates soon.

Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
I had actually thought of waiting some more in view of what I've read about issues with WLAN connectivity, e.g. that one cannot access the N900 by ssh after it has been idle for some time or, more worrying, a significant reduction of WLAN connectivity itself. But not least because of this thread here I finally did it. Since I'm using vpnc from devel, I started by de-installing that, de-installed a couple of other packages, and then the OTA upgrade went very smoothly. After the reboot everything looked fine, except that I already knew that WLAN wouldn't work before I did
Code:
mv /etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script.dpkg-dist /etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script Next, a reboot to have everything in order. The fly-by boot video flew by, and then  a blank screen. Not completely black, but almost. Like the screensaver having kicked in, without having made it to final darkness. But it couldn't be woken up. Then I tried using the camera. Funny, the camera seemed to work. However, closing the camera brought me back to the previous state. Why did I do this not entirely necessary upgrade? I had been so happy with my N900, now it seemed gone... However, pressing the power button for somewhat longer brought up the Nokia boot screen, and pressing some more, turned the phone off completely, after which it came to life at the next boot. :o I've now tested the upgraded system only so much, but I'm pleased by what I see. It seems it is quite a bit smoother in every respect, also the portrait mode of the browser is a nice additon (after 4 failed attempts with ctrl-shift-o, which only brought up some file dialog). So except for this brief shock of one failed boot-up after the manual installation of the new libicd_network_ipv4.script, it seems I also had a problem-free PR1.1 update. :) So far, I haven't even seen the sshd to become inaccessible. If that happens only after a rather long time, it would actually be no issue at all for me - I could accept it even as a security enhancement. I'm just curious now: has anybody seen his N900 in a similar coma-like state after the upgrade or after this manual intervention with libicd_network_ipv4.script? Be that as it may, I'm happy now and above all very grateful to those who figured out how to handle the issue introduced by vpnc (for which I'm also grateful, because I need it for work, although this package clearly needs some maintainance.). Thanks, folks!! UPDATE: Another scare on day 2 with PR1.1: all video clips and music files have disappeared. With the file manager I could see that they were still there, started a video clip successfully from the file manager, but when I tried the same with my music files, the file manager crashed. I tried a few more times - whenever I tried to scroll down my folder of mp3 files, the file manager stopped working and had to be closed. However, a reboot solved that problem. Now all my video and music files were again accessible by the media player, and also the file manager could handle them. I guess that tracker-processes had not been refreshed before my first access of video and music files and the subsequent reboot. So still no real problem with PR1.1 so far. Most imporantly, so far I have not encountered any of the problems that others have reported with WLAN connectivity. ;) |
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
No problem for me...10 minutes to upgrade, everything's ok
|
Re: Anyone had a problem-free PR1.1 update?
As I had the American model and am in Australia, I downloaded the global firmware in Debian and flashed without a problem.
