Code:
cat /etc/resolv.conf this is the default setting. to use a different nameserver, you can again use echo in an xterm as root: Code:
echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" > /etc/resolv.conf |

instead of automatic DNS enter "8.8.8.8" and "8.8.4.4" as DNS. those are the IPs of google's dns servers you could also enter those IPs into your modem as default DNS servers, but keep in mind that your whole network uses them if you do that. |

I changed the Google DNS on the N900 and nothing happened, but ... when tested with OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 208.67.222.220 he was able to access the repositories of Nokia and send SMS via Webtext. ... now I just need to resolve the MaStory, but is another problem that I will search now. Thank you very much, friend! You were persistent! :):) |
Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
Hello,
I am having the exact same problem as Maya. If I use the GPRS connection everything works fine but with my home WLAN I cannot install apps from the Ovi Store etc. I tried the OpenDNS and Google DNS servers listed above but it didn't help. Any ideas? |
Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
Can you use anything with the WLAN at home (browser, repositories, etc)?
|
Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
The connection is working fine (browser, email etc.) but I always get this error when trying to install something:
Resolving host timed out: downloads.maemo.nokia.com I can install apps with the GPRS connection but I'd like to get my N900 working with the WLAN. And there are no problems with my PC. |

There are times that goes well, sometimes simply do not connect. Exist a Google software called namebench and found the best DNS for my network. And it really worked. But have to configure the N900 also and not just the modem. |
Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
Facebook and Foreca widgets won't update when I'm in my home WLAN.
Update: I changed both phone and modem DNS settings to OpenDNS and the problem seems to be solved. I hope it stays. Thank you very much for everyones help in this thread. :) |
Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
I had the same problem with failed repositories and like maya once I changed the DNS settings to the OpenDNS servers everything started working again. I had also been having problems with Foreca not updating but this too is now OK. So what changed out there, because previously having auto DNS was no problem? Judging from other forums I have looked at this is quite a widespread problem and maybe needs a lot more publicity. Not everybody is a Linux guru, we are just mobile phone owners. Same with non-availability of PR1.2 for people who have Vodaphone 205 build even though we bought generic phone from - in my case - Expansys, and I am on O2. I do not fancy risking bricking it by trying to flash build 203, and I worked in IT for 20 years.

Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
same problem here, because of this DNS problem, hope nokia does something about this quickly

Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
My problems started when I moved to a new service provider (and a new ADSL router), as I explain here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=63416
Does anybody have any news about this? Thanks. |

DNS or some other DNS errors. The DNS stuff has to be done by ISPs and not by the phone producer. |
Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
I solved my problem editing resov.conf file. However, I'm not so sure about nokia's innocence regarding this problem.

1) How should Nokia know about all the different DNS settings of all the ISPs worldwide? 2) Nokia does not -as far as I know- provide internet services These settings come from your provider. If your ISP messes up his DNS then Nokia cannot do anything about this. |
Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
My ISP's DNS resolve correctly all the names in my PC and in N900 console (nslookup). The problem is in the 127.0.0.1 that nokia writes in the resolv.conf file (directed to the own N900). If adding to that file a DNS server from my ISP solves the problem (or an open DNS server), then I cannot be sure about who is responsible. Can you?

there's a reason the default nameserver of the N900 is itself - it's running dnsmasq to cache lookups locally, which is actually A Good Thing on a device that can constantly change connections - f.ex. your ISP's nameservers probably won't do you much good on a public WLAN. now, why the dnsmasq on your device doesn't work properly is a whole other story :) edit: Rob1n has already posted instructions in this thread on how to best set custom nameservers. |
Re: [help] Complicated problem of connection with N900
Yes, that's why I have added a public DNS server (google) to resolv.conf. I have not removed the first nameserver (127.0.0.1). Then, if it fails, it goes to google's DNS (8.8.8.8) which should work for any ISP and connection.
I'll look for more info about dnsmasq. Quote:

127.0.0.1 should not be the problem since I have that one in my resolv.conf too and no problems going to internet. Although I do not use the same ISP on PC and N900. |
