Yeah that's a must. All those apps that run in landscape mode will magically work in portrait mode. :D

I'm calling shenanigans on the "universal portrait mode" requests--much like the endless yammering about "capacitive", it's a hollow criterion for merit based on iWannabe rather than an actual need.

Sure it's useful for one-handed txting, and a handful of apps, but it's hardly a universal necessity. A lot of the Maemo 5 apps are best used with keyboard opened, anyway.

why come up with this point when it's been confirmed officially that universal portrait support across the whole OS will not happen until Maemo 6?

Just to answer the factual parts. Qt 4.0 came out in 2005, 4.2 in 2006. Maemo does not include KDE so stability comparisons based on it are dubious at best.

.

Qt != KDE :)
Just forget about KDE and look at Qt with new eyes and without prejudice. Nokia did (IMHO) a good thing liberating Qt a bit from the K grip by buying Trolltech. It's a fresh start and who cares if KDE is using Qt? :)

OTOH, Qt is stable and has been used by commercial software (Opera, Google Earth, Skype, etc) for years.

probably: bug fixes, bug fixes, bug fixes and uhmm oh yeah! bug fixes.

We wont get any extra's! only when we yet again buy a new phone

- Portrait mode accross the UI. (I know it prbably wont happen before Maemo6)

- Flash 10.1 (Sould be 2010 Q1 so might even happen)

- Ovi maps free navigation (as mentioned earlier, Nokia has said every phone with GPS will have this from marh onwards, so in principle it should include N900 hence it will be sold also after march.)

- Some useful Java runtime (probably wont happen ever at least by official Nokia implementation, but it would be very welcome. I have heard of some NWR Nokia Web Runtime or someting like that coming to Maemo5 & 6 but not quite sure of what is it capable of)

- SyncML or some other built-in solution for perfect syncing with Google mail, contacts & calendar. (also won't probably happen by Nokia, but thereare some promising community projects going on that probably will solve this in some point)

- many others ofcourse but this was from the top of my head...
that would be really nice.

i doubt we'll get half of those.

You should double your expectations.

I doubt we will get even one of those.

I dont think Nokia will be so dumb as to not to implement it on N900. It is quite aware of the popularity of the device and know that people will stop buyin if its unavailable. My guess we should hv it till march. Till tat time jus lets put all the pressure on them by spamming all nokia centers with free turn by turn navigatio questions;)

Its a great idea to not be prompted for an action you have already tried to execute.

for example...lets take the iphone, although I think the N900 is a better device and highly more configurable. Has anyone ever noticed that when you ask the iphone to do something there is no response back to the user unless the action failed which make the UE (User Exprience) in the GUI so much nicer and slick, not to mention faster. Where nokia falls down on the GUI side of things is that their interfaces sometime provide too much feedback.

For instance why do i need a message from the hildon desktop saying "bluetooth activated" when i have just selected to turn the thing on. wouldn't it be obvious that it is activated if i just asked the system to turn it on. In the event of the system returning any sort of message back to the user, it should be an error message ...i.e "bluetooth activation unsuccessful" or something like that. My point being many more notification messages generated by the UI should only be there to display error messages to inform the user that the required action had failed. If no message was displayed when the user asked the system to do something then take it for granted that the task was executed successfully.

If many users disagree with this suggestion then as an alternative maybe have a confirmation one can switch on and off i.e "supress system notification messages"

Cheers

Thoughts and comments on a postcard please

i don't think portrait mode would be possible on N900 without reconstruction the layout of the OS. there is a rotate.py script but the layout wasn't fitting the screen. I think QT4.6 might fix this problem if Nokia build OS function in QT4.6 instead. So auto rotation and scrolling would be more fluid.

And also the physical keyboard... so we can get a much thinner device just like the iPhone. This is what I hope for next FW.

Yeah, me too...

I m waiting to have the below ones in my N900...

Portrait mode
OVI map route-by-route navigation
Most important one, USSD bug fix

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2?) and its release date

If the next firmware doesn't introduce (at least 75% of) :
- MMS
- Ovi + Step by step nav.
- Front camera videocalls
- Night mode for video and image camera mode
- Fixes for wifi.

I'm ebaying my n900, going back to N95, and starting to look for a nice HTC with android, which has all those stuff.

So I won't be able to type ifconfig, top, and schedule tasks with crontab.
So what?

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2?) and its release date

seriously though, what about some kind of option to tell background tasks to 'pause'. Sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes, you want to keep some things open, but you also want something else which you are concentrating on to work a bit faster, without being willing to close those other things right now.. So, keeping backround windows in a state of suspended animation would be a good idea. then when you are ready to come back you could wake them up, perhaps through an option on the power button?

If this is an old idea I'll sod off, but if it's a new one I'll take it to brainstorming.....

And where I live, i'll get 90% price on it, as its being sold here at highly over priced prices, 900$.

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2?) and its release date

Whilst most people are posting wishlists I think I'll post a don't wish list:
  • MMS - firstly functionality exists from community, secondly do people really use MMS? I used it once about 5 years ago and never tried again
  • Front Camera videocalls - meh. Why do I want to have the person I'm talking to see a grainy picture of me? Only time I'd want this would be when I'm sitting at home, and my laptop has a far better camera than any front facing camera on any phone
  • Night mode on camera - All the night modes I've used just produce terrible grainy photos or video that I normally just delete.
  • Java runtime - flash is enough of a performance impact I wouldn't want to encourage people to write java apps ;)
  • Other Stuff I don't give a crap about

these are of course my opinion but feel free to flame me.

Things I'd wouldn't mind seeing:
  • Portrait keyboard
  • Flash 10 (only if it supports hardware decoding)
  • a better ovi maps (faster start up and saving placemarks would be fine)
  • improved video capture (sometimes not very smooth)
  • MFE for google support (though nuevasync works well)

Things that I want:
  • Official QT 4.6 support (granted)
  • performance improvements (fingers crossed)
  • battery life improvements (same as above)
  • less Zealots and FUD spreaders on t.m.o (in my dreams)

Then I would be even more happy with my N900.

I have the same opinion, all the rest I could wait for being implemented/corrected in future releases... Just one thing that must be fixed ASAP is paid content on Ovi Store, and I suspect PR1.1.1 wasn't able to fix apt to allow a reliable anti-piracy protection...

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2?) and its release date

The only crucially important update i want in the next firmware is a fix for incoming calls failing while 2G/2.5G packet data is connected.

Vote for this fix here if you want it too:
GPRS/EDGE data connection prohibits incoming voice calls

currently, despite the network fully supporting the proper signaling (which suspends packet data for incoming calls on N95, N82, N97, and 5800xm when on 2G/2.5G), the N900 doesn't suspend or drop the data connection for incoming calls - they always go straight to voicemail.

it's the #1 most critical bug for me, since i'm always on 2.5G network and don't want to miss incoming calls, i can never allow my N900 to connect automatically to packet data; and connecting manually is done knowing that while i'm connected if my wife calls she'll get pissed that her calls go persistently straight to voicemail.

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2?) and its release date

Turn by turn navigation should really be just a matter of time. In last interviews on All About Symbian, the clearly said Maemo/Meego will focus on maps and augmented reality. These will be some of the most important features.
They also said in some other interviews that every Qt realese of Nokis Maps will be the same for Symbian and Maemo/Meego.
Of course, it's hard to say when all this is going to happen, but I suspect that March could be an interesting month for us.
