Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
Mostly.
If you already have web and walk, then they will take that off and put the web and walk plus on. which results in paying an extra £5. I couldn't get Skype to work under 3G, but meh, that was either bad luck, or incompetence on my part. |

The web n walk plus has a 3gb allowance and allows voip. He upgraded me to that for a two-day trial and I was able to sign in to msn via pidgin and amsn. It normally costs an extra £5 a month for this. I was able to connect to msn via windows live for s60 on an n95 8gb while on web n walk. So it seems either the windows live software is specifically allowed or it is using different ports or protocols from pidgin/amsn on n900, which does not identify it as voip. |

I registered to a public jabber site (i used jaim.at) but there are loads. Try here for a list http://www.jabberes.org/servers/ I then installed PSI http://psi-im.org/wiki/Main_Page on my PC Logged using newly created jabber account Used the service discovery option and added msn. This allowed me to log in to msn using my msn details. On the n900 I added my jabber account from the IM accounts section etc and all linked up Hope this makes sense? |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
Thanks darlomrh. I'll try this out in a few days when I return to the web n walk.

Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
Those of you with problems, refuse to talk to an agent, ask to speak to a supervisor. No one else is of any help at T Mobile.

Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
Just been testing with my friend's recently ordered N900 T-Mobile contract and found a way around it.
Use home Wifi to connect and setup/signin to your account, then switch to T-Mobile Internet Let me know if it's working for you too ;) Package he's on was the £30/month MPD with T-Mobile |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
So I am back to Web n walk now and have lost access to msn via pidgin internet and amsn on n900 tmobile contract.
I followed darlomrh's instructions above (#43) and I was able to have access to msn via jabber. The only issue (for me) with above is that msn contacts get integrated into the phones contact. To keep contacts separate, I have tried to sign in to my jabber account via pidgin internet messenger but that is not working on tmobile (works on wifi). Anyone else managed to make it work via pidgin? At least I can have access via integrated IM section of n900 menu. |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
Im on tmobile in the uk and I can use skype on web n walk... ive just turned off my home wifi and connected via 3g and done the echo test, is a bit jumpy but it works... I had no tmobile bumf with my contract so if I was unable to connect I would cancel as I asked in the shop to make sure I can stream music and use voip! the dude told me of course, infact he looked at me like I was from 1998! ;)

Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
My month of handset as modem has finished and I'm back to msn and facebook chat not working. So I guess it's time for the jabber workarounds *sigh*

Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
*UPDATE*: A provisional win I think. I called T-Mobile CS again last night and tried to ask why is this happening to one of the overseas call centers.
They hadn't got any idea what I was talking about and did the sensible thing and passed me on to a guy in Tech Support (Mark I think his name was). I explained this issue and told him that on Handset as Modem I had no issues but now I'm back to WnW Plus the services are blocked again and so on. So he went away to do some digging and within 15 min called me back. He though the issue was an option called "Capped Daily Rate" which was enabled. That has been removed and at the moment msn/facebook plugins seem to be working OK on my WnW plus plan. I haven't tested that much as I'm at home and connected via WiFi but initial tests look promising. |

Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
It took a couple of minutes and I am on WnW Plus so there may be more restrictions on WnW

Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
darlomrh
Is your problem different to mine then? I was on the standard web n walk and couldn't connect to msn. I was upgraded to web n walk plus for a few days and was able to connect. But you cannot connect to msn on web n walk plus? That right? Guy on tmobile customer services told me web n walk plus and mobile as modem were the same. |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
I would just like to chip in my tuppence worth...
I have been experiencing the same problem and am on WnW Plus. I also have another T-Mobile contract which I have had for ~4 years with web and walk plus. My old sim would connect to MSN but my new one wouldn't. More importantly I couldn't connect to anything on port 21 (FTP) with my new contract either (couldn't really give a toss about MSN tbh). Bizarrely, port 22 (SSH) was open though, which was lucky as I could use it to SSH to my home PC, pull down the file and resend it from my home PC over SFTP. I called T-Mobile twice about this today. The first time, they insisted it was due to content lock being activated, despite me having it deactivated as the first thing i did when i received my fone (and having no trouble browsing 'Adult' web content over HTTP via 3G). The CS claimed that this would fix my problem, and encouraged me to hang up the line to check. Needless to say, this didn't help one iota. After having spent a few hours perusing talk.maemo.org and t-mobile's terms and conditions, I called tech support again. This time, I was connected to possibly the most unhelpful person in the world, a guy called Scott. Scott claimed that any use of WnW Plus other than WWW was unsupported, and that it was just hard luck. He outright refused to even try to do anything about my problem at all, and tried repeatedly to get me to hang up, which I refused to do. I asked to speak to his manager and he tried to fob me off with a 2 hour call back promise, which I also refused, insisting instead on staying on the line until my problem was resolved. He even tried to claim that I was being unreasonable in expecting anything other than web access. When I tried pulling out the 'not fit for purpose' line, he threatened me with cancellation of my contract and to transfer the entire charges for the length of contract remaining to a debt collection agency and inferred that this would ruin my credit rating and it would serve me right for complaining !!! Eventually, after about an hour of me refusing to hang up until my problem was resolved (I have a funny feeling T-Mob's CS reps are unable to hang up on you so rely on you dropping the call), he finally relented and put me through to his manager - Paul. Paul, on the other hand, seemed to know exactly what was going on. I suggested removal of capped daily rate as suggested here, and he concurred, suggesting that it was the only difference between the two contracts I have. The instant he disabled said 'service' (ironic isn't it?) MSN connected on my phone, and FTP worked too. TL.DNR: 1) If you have any issues with blocked ports, get 'capped daily rate' removed from your account and everything should be fine. 2) The lower level monkeys at T-Mobile are either unable or not allowed to hang up on you, so just keep them on the phone until you get what you want. Bonus points if you call just as their shift is about to end and they want to go home... |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
Sorry for the delay....
I can confirm that my issue was the capped daily rate. I have always been on WnW Plus from the start. I went for the £5 for life of the contract. There is a subtle difference between WnW plus and broadband as modem. The latter allows VoiP such as sipgate etc. For another £5 on top again I didn't think it was worth it. Hope this helps |

So, if I was to ring and speak to TMobile and try and get the daily cap lifted on an ordinary Web and Walk account would that work do you think? |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
im really confused... I just signed up to a 2 year conract with tmobile (to get the best phone ever of course hehe) the guy at carphonewarehouse said it was good for skype, youtube etc i have checked on a number of occasions and yes i get skype, youtube and all that but now hear people having problems with skype. I suppose my questions is, whats the crack?

These are the correct ones as opposed to the one T-mobile will tell you which are not... The whole MMS wiki is worth reading too... Don't forget to install fAPN too if you already haven't so you can set up the 2nd APN for mms and keep the settings for Web N Walk too. You need to be connected to the mms APN to both send and recieve. You will get ordinary SMS to tell you that an MMS has been sent - then you can switch to the mms APN to collect it via fMMS. |

YouTube = no problem msn = people not on web n walk plus having issues, some issues still been seen on web n walk plus until daily cap lifted ftp (port 21) = possible issue until daily cp lifted I have web n walk on the £35 mnth 24 mnth contract and can use skype on wireless and gprs but can only use msn via pidgin over wireless. However, if you read contract T and C, use of VOIP is excluded from internet fair use policy ..... |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
of all things, why block msn? and why have a web n walk plus? surely if you dont go over your cap you should be ok...? i dont use msn so am not having any problems if however I start to experience problems and am unable to gain access I shall be phoning tmobile to complain, I was not shown the t's and c's when I signed up. is sooo lame!

Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
msn uses a wide range of ports and protocols so tmo must really be doing some work to keep it out..
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927847 in diagnosing your IM connection issues you could do worse than to pick up a copy of the telnet app (https://garage.maemo.org/projects/telnet-client/) for the n800 (works on my n900) and test the tcp port connectivity as given by m$ You could also connect your IM over wifi and use netstat to see the established connections.. For those people who complain that msn live client works on their n95 or whatever; possibly it is using a different port, or using a port that tmo cannot easily block (a web one) N95 has wifi, I suggest you get your laptop, wire it to your router with cat 5, then use the wireless card in adhoc mode, connect the n95 to the ad hoc and sign in to msn through the laptop. this will let you run net analysis software such as wireshark to see where the packets are going. you might also have a router that will display all the connections it has set up in its status pages, so you can see what your n95 is connected to.. then its just a matte rof lobbying the IM developers to add that port alternative |

just change provider if you don't like it; £20 a month gets you 800 minutes, 1600 texts (or 400 mms or a mix) and unlimited data from o2, and msn and skype calling and im works.. |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
o2 were the first to complain about skype and were the ones to liken themselves to dumb pipes, I am already on contract and I get 900 minutes and 500 free sms's, I already use facebook to message people so why block msn? facebook and msn and basically the same thing except more people are on facebook so I chat to more via that method?!? seriously where is the sense there?
I am from South Africa and when the interent started to get popular over there there were talks of the telco (there is only one) banning voip as it would prevent people from using the actual phones service... Did this ever happen? no, so why are we here again but this time Im in the UK? Sorry im moving horrably off topic here so I shall stop my rant there ;) |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
sorry one last question, how can I check to see if msn is blocked on my account,i.e is the website blocked?
|
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
see the ms kb article i linked earlier; it gives the ports and addresses used by msn. there are many other sites aswell that list the ips etc that msn uses. use telnet to connect to the same places. if you cannot get there with telnet, msn wont connect
msn is much older than facebook chat so it might simply be that it thasnt been blocked YET. as far as i know FB doesnt allow voip calls etc, so its not likely to be hated as much by the networks.. add that to the fact that the networks know that billions of kids use facebook every day, they even offer stuff like free facebook if you have at least 10p credit on your pay and go phone, just so they can get the kids onto their network.. banning facebook chat would be a dumb idea, commercially.. did you ever see the networks advertising "free msn chat on your phone!" ? nope.. its not as killer-must-have as facebook, from a revenue point of view |

Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
I have installed msn pecan on my phone, I entered my msn details and then attempted to sign in, it thinks about it then closes and says "not signed in" is the me being blocked then or should I get another error message? bit odd I dont get an error message
|
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
@Spotfist
That is the problem we all had, you don't get any error message. Ring T-Mobile, ask to speak to a supervisor, explain to them that msn gets blocked unless you upgrade to web n walk plus (mobile broadband plus), and that it SHOULD NOT do, there is nothing in their policy that states msn is blocked unless you upgrade, then you'll get web n walk plus for free and you'll be fine. Make it clear many other users have this problem, if you still don't get the point across, ask to speak to a team leader called Richard, he knows about the problem. |
Re: T-mobile UK users help needed
thanks guys, I shall phone them tomorrow!
Well I phoned em and they basically gave me a load of tosh about how it was the phone blah, blah, blah finally spoke to someone who knew wat the problem was, as stated on this thread I conplained and asked to be swapped to webnwalk plus but it doesn't show on my online account but msn is now unblocked... should it be showing on my online account? |

Now t-mobile do not supply the n900 (check their website) and so do not have any information on settings to help resolve the msn problem. I have checked on their website and all the smartphones they offer come with the unlimited internet booster (same as web n walk plus I think). Because the n900 has been obtained with a third party, you will only have the free flexible internet booster. But of course the n900 is a smartphone. Mentioned that n900 is using new linux software so no official clients, only opensource. As a compromise, they will hopefully upgrade you to web n walk plus for free as they can't help you with settings and it's a smartphone. Mention that you have searched various forums and this seems to solve the problem. I did not need to speak to a teamleader but you may need to. |
