Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

once i added the facebook plugin and enabled the account I only see a few of my facebook contacts. why would this be. are there setting for plugin or in facebook that affect this?

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

I tried the Facebook chat and it was really neat and worked as expected at first - but then I started noticing that as I am simultaneously logged into Facebook from my desktop web browser, that session gets continuously logged out as long as I have the IM part in N900 enabled. That's not nice.

Really? I always thought only MSN Protocol Plugin for Conversations and Contacts is part of Extra Protocol Plugins for Conversations and Contacts where both uses telepathy-butterfly for MSN, while Pidgin Protocols Plugin for Conversations and Contacts uses telepathy-haze on the other hand. Packages included in both "Extra Protocol Plugins for Conversations and Contacts" and "Pidgin Protocols Plugin for Conversations and Contacts" are different as well.

@biggzy: have you tried restarting the device after the update? Try apt-get update then apt-upgrade in xterm if you still don't see the plugin for facebook

What does that mean?
If I installed Extra Protocol Plugins For Conversations And Contacts 0.8, which MSN I need to use? Pidgin MSN or the other one?:confused:

Only MSN Plugin for Conversations and Contacts is included in Extra Protocol Plugins for Conversations and Contacts.

You can see all packages actually installed if you go Application Manager > Uninstall > Extra Plugin for Conversations and Contacts > Details. You'll find MSN Plugin for Conversations and Contacts inside

Does this mean If I install Extra Protocol Plugins For Conversations And Contacts 0.8, I am really just installing both of those, and there is nothing different from the pidgin plugin?

apt-get update ensures your device's database is in synced with respective repository and apt-get upgrade "updates" out-of-date packages on the local device with new versions available on the repository. You'll need internet connection for this and make sure application manager is not running or apt-get will return error.

One good example is if you previously had pidgin extra plugin protocol for contacts and conversation installed, you'll notice another app called pidgin bonjour and sametime will be installed along with it. For some unknown reason bonjour and sametime will not be removed even after you uninstalled the pidgin extra plugins. apt-get update then apt-get upgrade can get rid of it.

I can merge to their relevant contact profile (on N900) but, if i log out of FB, and then log back in, the FB chatters are no longer assigned to the relevant N900 Contact Profile. Merging becomes pointless because everytime i merge (from loggin in, and out) it adds another FB field into the N900 contact profile with the same details.

Is this something everyone else is experiencing??
(hope iv explained that ok).

Same here.
btw. Would it be nice if Hermes fetches the chat ID and merges it into existing contact?

That only works with apps that use libcurls. and when you add your proxy to /etc/profile guess what would happen. The browser would cease to work. so yeah you might be able to get gpodder and maemo and some few apps to connect to the internet. your broswer would stop working. and to use the browser, you would need to open terminal and use vi to comment out the http_proxy line. reboot the device and then you can use the browser ( which would mean you wont be able to use any other app till you uncomment the http_proxy line and reboot the device again). you also have to do the same thing if you want to use a 3g network or use another wireless connection which doesnt require proxy.,. now if add proxy to /etc/profile fixes all the problem than i would be a happier man but it doesnt. it works with only apps that use libcurls which are much. so you still miss out on internet radio, qik, conversation and all the plugin (twitter, irc, yahoo, msn etc) wikitunes, mastory.
I have used symbian, windows, mac, iphoneOS, LInux (kde and gnome) and maemo has the worst proxy support I have ever seen in an OS. Appalling is an understatement

I have tried it and its still didnt work. I have a bug filed for like every internet aware 3rd party app I use because they all dont work with the system wide proxy settings you add to your wifi profile. I feel the pain so i know exactly what am talking about. 100% of 3rd party apps on maemo dont have proxy support. It has been a problem with the N810 but things just nose dived with N900. If you are behind a network proxy like your main connection is through a proxy (like many university students and cooperate workers) Just forget the N900 infact only the web browser and skype works.. no other core app works. no Internet radio, no gtalk, even though application manager works you need to use your proxy IP address instead of the hostname other wise the nokia repo wont load... Has if that is not enough.. you wont be able to use gpodder, mauku, qik,OMWeather, all the cool conversation pluggin, wikitunes .. i mean just think of any application that requires internet to work.. there would fail on the N900 if you are behind a proxy. and yeah I have filed a bug against almost everyone of them.. so am not just sitting down groaning

Facebook only exports contacts which are online in their chat API, so the remaining ones will be added as soon as they log in to facebook.

Check the dependencies of telepathy-extras (Extra Protocol Plugins For Conversations And Contacts):

Code:

Depends:account-plugin-haze, account-plugin-butterfly, account-plugin-salut
So, if you install telepathy-extras, you would have both telepathy-haze, and telepathy-butterfly.

If Skype works, Facebook should as well. They both use telepathy, so they should both be equally aware of proxies.

That's not the right way to set the proxy: Settings -> Internet connections -> Connections -> (select connection) -> Edit -> Next -> Next (until you see the advanced button)

Then you'll see a "proxies" tab.

I've no idea what actually makes use of those proxy settings, probably nothing from telepathy does it.

I I'll read that from msn-pecan, and maybe try to patch telepathy-haze as well.

Wrong. AFAIU telepathy doesn't provide a centralized way to get configurations; and even if it did; one telepathy CM might have proxy support implemented, while another one wouldn't.

Same goes for libpurple plugins, although libpurple makes it easier for plugins, so chances are if one works the rest would too.

IOW you can't really assume anything.

No they dont. were they heck did you get that from. skype is one of the most advance piece of technology when it comes to getting round wirewalls and proxy. Infact skype calls and IMs dont get charged by my network carriers I can even make calls even when am out of carrier credit. I could make a 3 hour calls and wont get charged a damn.. skype on the N900 is the full blown skype integrated to Conservation and the call app. It has nothing to do with Telepathy. gtalk doesnt work on the N900 because it uses telepathy XMPP/Jabber framework and there is a bug on maemo about telepathy jabber not working with network proxy that bug has been filed since the since 2006 and still yet to be fixed.

Skype is a telepathy connection manager named telepathy-spirit.

Normally that is how proxy should be configured on the N900. But if you do that alone on the browser and skype would work. Nothing else would. I mean not one thing that requires internet would work.. no 3rd party app, no core system app nothing.. you device would be an internet lemon if you connect via a proxy. I mean its that bad.. Bad is actually an understatement. the only work around which would make the pain a bit bearable is to add http_proxy to /etc/profile and hope your favourite app uses libcurls otherwise just forget it. even then its still a bit PITA.. One can almost think that Maemo was designed not to be used behind proxy and the proxy settings is just some piece of config file no application respect. The saddest part of this is that no one seems to be paying attention to it cus not many people are affected. But every OS I have tried even symbian and Microsoft windows have excellent http proxy support. the situation in maemo is beyond pathetic. Seriously

and is that what the N900 use? because on the N810 skype was the only application that worked with proxy. Infact ask any sysad there would tell you skype is notorious for getting round firewalls that is why its hugely popular and why it just works. I dont know much about telepathy-spirit but I know that Telepathy (and any of its non skype plugin just doesnt work with proxy)

NB indeed skype on the N900 is based on telepathy-spirit which is closed source btw the underlining protocol is proprietary. I think its just a way to port the skype proprietary protocol to N900. Its just a shame that such closed source protocol is the only component of telepathy that works with and respect the system wide proxy

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

Facebook Chat works great on my N900.
When I sign in, my facebook friends who are online (on fb chat) appear in my contacts.

HOWEVER, I noticed something odd.
I merge the FB contacts with their corresponding existing contacts (so that they appear under the same name). So far so good.
BUT when I restart the N900 and sign in again, duplicates of all the fb online contacts (including those that I merged earlier) appear again...

Kajko 2010-02-01 20:56

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

Facebook chat works on my N900 but with some odd behaviour ocasionally. Sometimes when I get an IM it shows two of the same, like a duplicate.

Re: IM Protocol Plugins v0.8 release - Facebook Chat!

I had to disable chat history because it kept bouncing all the messages from history again and again when I had some disconnects with plugin. (So basically it worked as it should but there should be some sort of timeout)

As i said couple of messages before its just history popping up again and again when it reconnects. You can disable history from accounts settings.

No, it's not. You're still connected. It just sometimes bounces back the same messages and appears that your contact just repeated what you said. History clearly shows who said what and when.

I dont know exactly, as i installed many things yesterday, but from the first sight it seems like facebook chat drains the battery very fast.
I did now deactivate the facebook chat account, and battery seems now draining slower.
Can someone confirm this, or maybe i am wrong, and some other of my yesterday installs is responsible.
