No, it's not the same - see towards the bottom of http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras for details about the various extras repositories. The linked pages contain details about how to set them up (pay attention to the warnings though).

You can use the new version without activating the extras-devel repository if you download the package from http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d..._0.3-2_all.deb and install it manually from x-term:
Code:

sudo gainroot
dpkg -i pedometerhomewidget_0.3-2_all.deb

Re: [Announce] Pedometer Home Widget in extras-devel

That is a great application. I like it very much. However, as I like to keep it running all the time in the background, I forgot to stop it in the evening. My monday steps seemed to be added to tuesday. Suggestion: Is it possible to save and restart the counting at midnight if it is running?

Thanks for reporting this. I'll try to upload a new version that will fix this bug tomorrow.

To avoid such situations when the user forgets to stop the counter (running over the night is definitely a waste of energy) an option to schedule start/stop times might be added. How much do you think this would be worth implementing?

luipaard 2010-03-18 12:11

Re: [Announce] Pedometer Home Widget in extras-devel

The scheduling sounds a nice option, if the user interface is kept as intuitive as it is now. Perhaps it should be voted.

I have been using this while walking on the school run for the last two weeks and am loving it. Top stuff! :)

thank you, although I'm being a complete wimp and too scared of the extras, and as for using x-term, oooh no!

Will wait a bit as I'm sure it will make it into the other catalogues!

I've promoted the new version to extras-testing.
Please test & vote: http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...ewidget/0.3-3/

Thanks!

Not sure if I'm the only one, but I can't seem to change the aspect settings to show anything other than current + total + graph. Did I miss something? I goto the settings click widget aspect, choose show only total, click okay..and nothing happens.

Same here. I set it using gconftool: gconftool -s -t int /apps/pedometerhomewidget/aspect <number; "current + total + graph" is 0 and the number is incremented by one as you go down the list of available aspects>

You're right, there's a bug with that option. I'll fix it and upload a new version to extras-devel and extras-testing as soon as possible.

Thanks for reporting.

I've uploaded a new version (0.3-4) that fixes this bug.

Please test & rate http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...ewidget/0.3-4/

The new version (0.3-4) has passed QA and is now in extras. Enjoy! :D

Is there any chance of having the Start Button turn GREEN when it is monitoring and WHITE when it is off? I am sometimes not sure if it is on or off and the small icon isn't that visible to my fading eyes.

Yes, I'm going to improve the UI for the start/stop button. Thanks for your suggestion, I'll probably implement it. Also, I'm thinking to make the entire region around the play icon clickable (the region with the labels:time, steps, etc.. ) in order to increase the usability.

Indeed it is one of the nice apps that i have seen for the N900. However accuracy , I am not very sure. It would be nice to give a small help or manual for the application. There should be a provision for downloading the data (statistics) to the PC.
Calibration of the step length is also required.
Of course using the gps would drain the battery.
Thanks for a nice application. Let us know when the next update is due.

Re: [Announce] Pedometer Home Widget in extras-devel

Just for information:

I have finally tracked down the cause of my cpu-usage problem.

Having the pedometer turned on boosts the cpu usage of hildon-home up to about 8-12% and total cpu usage up to 22% on average. This results in a significant battery drain over the course of a day.

This compares to an overall cpu usage of 8-10% average when pedometer is not monitoring. Having the widget loaded causes a negligible difference, having it turned on is when it takes the hit.

Your pedometer is probably one of my favourite applications for my N900 but I am not keen on sacrificing so much battery life; I wouldn't have thought it required too much in the way of cpu cycles to keep it ticking over. I generally leave the pedometer on permanently so this is a bit of a bummer to discover.

ps. Latest version of ped + PR 1.3 clean flash.

While the pedometer is running it is polling the accelerometer every ~50ms, that is causing the increase in CPU load.
To avoid frequent situations when the user forgets to stop it I was thinking to add an option that will automatically stop if no steps are detected for x minutes ( x to be defined by the user).
Also an auto start feature might be useful ( check for steps every 1-2 minutes and start if movement is detected).
I would really appreciate some feedback on these ideas. Thanks!

All data is stored in an xml file in ~/.pedometer. How would you like to have the data exported?

Re: [Announce] Pedometer Home Widget in extras-devel

These additions could prove extremely useful and save a fair bit of battery life by the sounds of it.

In my usage, I am not forgetting to turn it off. I work a physical job and like to keep a running tally of how many KM I have covered in a week so I was leaving it on all week long which leaves me scratching my head about what is happening to my battery.

Since I stopped using the pedometer my battery life is up to about 36-40 hours.

Having the application automatically cease monitoring the accelerometer during break times, driving times, home times and boat times might save enough to be useful :)

Thanks for your response and your excellent work so far!

ah, though this would be an app to help identify pedofiles.

The absolute path would be /home/user/.pedometer/data.xml
I don't think it's possible to see it using the file manager.

Found it, thanks!
I don't know if I just missed it the first time, or if it was due to enabling root access and hidden folders in FileBox, but I now found it using FileBox nonetheless.

Re: [Announce] Pedometer Home Widget in extras-devel

Hi!

Thanks for a really great widget!
The software works as described, however I find myself more often than I'd like to forget to turn it on.
Could there be some kind of smart solution to this besides something that would involve my door and a note with font size 80?

GPS, would be a powerdraining overkill.. how about looking for WLAN SSID?
I don't know if this would fit Pedometer Home Widget's roadmap or if this would take a lot of effort to implement not worth the gain from it.

Oh, right.. and please consider signing up on Flattr!
Since I'm more than willing to contribute, however I'd like to give a little many times and for a long time, rather than a somewhat bigger amount just a few times. Thanks!

thanks for the app. it's great to have pedometer widget. however, i found there's a little error counting. i normally use the phone landscape. when i rotate the phone to portrait, either left or right, it jumps the counter by 2 to 5 pts. is it affecting only my phone or everyone else's? thanks

Is this project still active? I've modded mine to to add the autostart option I filed as an enhancement request ( I carry spare batteries, so power drain isn't an issue - remembering to start it is ;) )
