Serious?? This thread is ridiculous. If your game needs NeYo playing in the background to woo a lady, may I suggest fastseduction.com to sharpen things up.

The camera issue seems legit to a degree, but it's not that hard to redial someone.

I total agree with OP with capabilty of playing media file while calling. It is a great feature to have, espcially for those of us who had other symbian N-series phone prior to N900. I vote that we have our Maemo community brainstorm on this and add a great enhancement/feature for our awesome Linus phone N900. :)

I think some of you are missing the point.. No one's looking for an alternative to file sharing over the internet- they've heard about the internet, they know the wonders of e-mail, messengers and file sharing in general.
They're asking a simple question- Can I make sound files play while I'm on a call? Is it blocked in any way? Can I unblock it?
If you have an answer, or something that might lead to one, then by all means, reply.
If you haven't, then you're just wasting everyone's time.

Has anyone of you have tried this before?I was actually surprised to see that this wasn't there on the maemo.Basically what this is,when you are in a call with someone ,you just open the music player and play a song.Now the music wont play through the speakers but it does in the call so the person on the other end can hear it.:)

This is actually a cool thing for me as I play romantic songs to my girlfriend at night in our long never ending conversation..lol.So does anyone have any idea about this and is it possible to get it on N900? Oh c'mon !! if symbian phones can have it why cant a mulitasking genious.

Maemo cannot do it and it also cant use the camera application while on a call. That is my biggest disappointment with Maemo. I saw a car accident while on the phone with my wife and I had to tell her I would call her back so I could use the camera and by the time it loaded, I missed the opportunity for footage and pics. On my N82 I just point and shoot no matter what else the OS is doing.

Sounds sort of like that app "Call Cheater" in s60v3 that i used to have but just using different sounds

Yeah i agree i hate that you cant use the camera while on the phone too. The craziest stuff happens always when you cant take the picture!

I'd assume PulseAudio has the underlying capabilities needed to make this work, but it wasn't really a priority.

did you try with musicbox or (k)mplayer ? they use a different method to play sounds than the standard media player, maybe it works. (no guarantees, though :) )

... so what we'd probably really need is a generix mixer application that can use the output of applicaton A ist input for application B, plus some fancy controls for volume etc.

A version 2.0 would then allow to add some distortion to whatever you're piping through the mixer, so you'll have a romantic song on the media player plus the microphone set as input for the phone application; in addition to that, you distort the mic somewhat so you're voice sounds rough and sexy... I can feel this will be a top download. ;)

Well, mplayer also doesn't work. From what I can tell this isn't just the phone app muting the volume or something. There appear to be 2 alsa playback devices, I am trying to play with them but so far no success...

Perhaps we can one-up this idea and add real-time voice distortion and auto-tune so we can just sing to our girlfriends (or make anonymous ransom demands).

FWIW, Sygic voice-over works when music is playing. I assume it's using the pulseaudio daemon and just ignoring some sanity check.

Were talking about playing audio while a call is in progress. Pulseaudio supports mixing from 2 different audio sources, something special happens when doing a call and we are trying to figure out what that is...

What if mediaplayer starts itself (there is a bug) after watching that movies (yes, THAT ".xxxtemp" movies...) while talking with our wife???????
I see myself trying to stop player or hanging phone call without result and throwing n900 against floor for "fast-logout"

Does sygic voice over work when you are in a middle of a call? if so, does it play the to the speakers? You were talking about together with the media player, which is something that is supported by default...

Also, camera cuts all audio because it needs exclusive access IIRC.

It's unfortunately designed that way. I forget the specifics, someone explained it a while back. Has to do with the phone call stopping the gstreamer backend from playing the call.

As far as I know no. My post was just saying

1) It's intentional by design
2) That someone had a more in depth explanation of what's happening (but not a solution sadly).
