I also thinks the settings menu is the place for that, but as qwerty12 mentioned, it's pretty undocumented and it's much more easy for me to do it in the status menu, so that's my current direction. Nevertheless, in the future I might know enough to move it to the settings menu. And again, thank you (and everybody else who's testing it) for your help! |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
First of all -thank you omeriko9 for putting your time and effort into this app!
Second I want to share few ideas for improvement: 1. Add vibration 2. Add configurable time period for sound/vibra notifications 3. If you have hard time developing GUI - why don't you use a simple config file that users can edit? With clear options like "enabled=YES", "sound=NO", "sound_file=/usr/home/MyDocs/...", etc. Yes GUI is nicer, but takes more work. Any way this can turn into "must have" app for N900! |

waste battery on a phone which has poor battery anyway? all this is meant to do is show you if you have miss call or text "if" you have not changed LED colour notification and if you have then its just an extra add on. |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Just updated, will let you know if I see any more notification issues. Thanks for the hard work.

Re: [Announce] Call Notify
@Ronaldo
Because you have ALREADY missed that vibration when incoming call or SMS arrived. And if phone is in your pocket you can not see the light. And if noisy you can not here the beep. The same as sound. And I don't know what is the author's idea, but ideas evolve in time. |

what if i do not want to check the phone because i'm in meeting or other situation where i'd hate to have continuous vibrate, one it would be annoying and two it would kill battery. :) |

never 1 minute 5 minutes 10 minutes 60 minutes would be a brilliant option in the settings of it! |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
by the way, great app ... my phone is in for repair at the moment but cant wait to try this one out ... definatley a missing essential part of a phone ... how did nokia manage to leave this one out???? its beyond me!
|
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
If there was a settings panel these could be user configurable settings i.e. Notify user every x minutes via audible alarm or vibrate.
I understand your concerns Ronaldo, I would not want continuous alerts period as this unnecessarily drains the battery and can be annoying for others (i.e. you forget your phone on your desk and it continually beeps or vibrates annoying your coworkers around!). If this was user configurable it would be great. |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
when I have BOTH a miss call and sms, opening 1 of them will get rid of both notifications. This should not happen because I have not open the other one.

I will add vibration notifications as well, that's a good idea. If someone afraid of his battery life, they can turn it off. I definitely want a editable configuration file, but that IMO must come with a GUI, for two reasons: 1. This app started as a small script for my private use, I didn't thought about configuration (everything can be configured from code, right? ;) ), and now I'm working on making the app configurable - a GUI is the easier part :) 2. I believe that this kind of app needs to be accessible to as many users as possible. Although I (and you?) do believe that manipulating an XML file is not a hard task, I think there are a lot of users here that would disagree. This app has functionalities that relevant to a large target audience and that's why I think GUI here is inevitable. |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
@omeriko9
Totally agree on GUI and wider accessibility of this app. As I said earlier - it is a must have app for everyone using a phone. Just wanted to give you a suggestions of easy(and still usable) configuration if you have difficulties with developing a GUI. |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
it's app's like this one and Connect Now that offer me reassurance I bought the right phone. especially with all the FUD floating around (myself included) about the flaws and how unpolished the OS is (this phone really is/was lacking so much that should've been there in the get-go, and I did a TON of research pre and post-purchase).
I want to thank you - and the other dev's - for helping tip the scale. I've been thinking about getting another phone until Nokia/Maemo irons out some issues and updates provide more features, but every 2-3 days I see a development that makes me think I won't need a sidekick for the N900 in a month or so time. |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
i am still seeing problems where the notifications are getting stuck, i just sent out a couple of sms messages, both sent successfully but the notification has been stuck with a flashing S and envelope for the past 5 minutes....

Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Today I installed call notify, but I don't get notification of sms or missed call. Am i missing something? Haven't tried to reboot yet. Looked up in processes list but nothing on call or notify.

Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Good little app - been testing it for the past day or so.
Not sure if this is what is meant to happen but when I send an SMS it flashes the message icon and what looks like a +S or +5...(see images below) this carries on for a while (it seems to generally go away after a few mins) or goes away when I shut that conversation window.... Ideally I wouldn't want a notification when I send a text as I know I've just sent one! Also, when I get an incoming SMS and have the conversation window open for that person keeps it flashing the SMS symbol, plus the number of messages, until I shut that particular conversation window.. is that what it is intended to do? Thanks for taking the time to make the app :) http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/...ac4c2e5e_o.png http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4003/...94c26690_o.png |

This is not what I meant... Currently I'm identifying the "SMS has been read" event by the closing of the notification window or the Conversations window. I'll try to do it by identifying the "opening" event. Also, the +5 icon (which originally mean "more than 5 missed SMS/calls") appears also when there is a notification and no new SMS/calls, which means that something is wrong... Anyway, I'll keep doing QA and testing it, also please make sure to download the most recent version 0.0.4-1 when it will be out to the extras-devel (should be shortly), it has a "manually clear notification" option in its GUI. |

You won't see anything like that in the processes list because it's a python script, what runs it is probably "run-standalone.sh", and the father process is "hildon-status-menu". If it's not a dependencies problem, you can try running: "killall -9 hildon-status-menu killall hildon-status-menu" instead of restarting. If it's still not working, it's probably a dependency problem that silently fails. Please let me know. Thanks! |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
I give a miscal after installation. But couldnt see any notification..why??
|
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
same here! no notifications. I just uninstaled waiting for a functional version.
|
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Actually I restarted.. Then I give miss call again and got the notification this time. But there are some bugs/
a. I make 2 and then 3 misscalls.. But it still shows 1 (it should be 3) b. I send an sms. It is showing sms only.(it should show call and sms) c. I again give a miscall and it shows 1 miss call only (it should show call and sms) I appreciate the work, but i think the above said bugs should be fixed |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
@omeriko9
Restarted status menu as you suggested. I can see status menu disappear and then loaded again, but still no notification is seen for received sms. Haven't tried missed call yet. |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Just installed the new version! Didn't know you had implemented sound notifications so it made me jump! lol
Still getting the persistant icon and +5 notification when I send an sms (and consequently the sound notification too!) but the option to clear manulaly works fine and is very welcome. One other thing: When I save changed settings (ie notification settings) should the menu disappear after I press save? It doesn't at the moment and I need to click outside the options area to get it to go away... Thanks for the update :) |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
hey i really dont like the call notify settings in the status area, id prefer them in the settings menu... thanks :D
sounds and vibe are cool, but can i change the vibe setting? i want it more noticable.. :) thanks |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Tried to update app - I don't get new version. Reinstalled - still no notification present in status.
|
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Don't like the idea of settings in status menu .It will be nice if you put the Call notify setting in "Settings"
|
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
What a great little application loaded up last night and worked perfectly this morning when i left the phone on silent and the wife called instead of me not realising for a length of time i was alerted by the vibrate every 5 mins.
Nokia should be sending you some sort of thanks (seeing as they forgot this minor issue) as yesterday I was ready to consign the N900 to plaything and emgency phone and buy something that woiuld let me at a glance see if i missed a call or text as well as the blue flashing light. Im sure im not the only one who is happy to have a cutting edge phone but needs some basic features in their primary phone they use day to day otherwise divorce is on the cards if i keep appearing to ignore calls from the Wife:rolleyes: |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Hi,
I installed this application and now I have 2 .desktop files on my device. /usr/share/application/hildon-status-menu/CallNotify.desktop /usr/share/applications/hildon-status-menu/CallNotify.desktop Are both necessary? nicolai |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
@nicolai: No, the application (without the 's') is a leftover from a typo I had :) you can safely remove it. By the way - I think I've removed it in 0.0.4-1 - which version do you have?
@zlatko, @puiradu and @ammaditra - I think there is a dependency issue and the application silently fails in your N900. I'll try harder to figure out what I was missing and update that for the next version. By the way - do you have the status-menu GUI (if you do, it means the app doesn't silently fails)? @zail, I'm sorry for the +5 notification, still working to improve this kind of bugs. Regarding the save button - well I thought of that - do you think that it should close the window? I had doubts about it. @f2thak, @plaban & @pillar, I understand why you don't like it. I believe that the natural place is in the settings menu. But as long as this is an alpha version - you need a quicker access to the "manually remove notificaion" button, and more important - I don't have the technical knowledge yet of how to add a python setting menu icon (and believe me, I've searched pretty hard for how to do that). Really hope that in the future I would be able to move it to the settings, but right not it's a bit over my head. |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
I don't like it the settings in status bar because my status bar is already full and I don't want to scroll down to go to the settings.
|
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
By the way, it might take me some time so continue working on that. Because except all others commitments I have, by accident I did a "rm -r *" on /var/ - never do that - and now reflashing... :)
|
Re: [Announce] Call Notify

But as I said, I also think it's not the natural place for the GUI, I just don't have the technical knowledge to overcome this issue for now. |
Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Actually what I want is to keep my status bar clean.Take your time, hope in future it will be in "settings" menu.

Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Tried to update to 0.0.4-1 from the previous version - response "Unable to update..". So I uninstalled the previous version and installed the 0.0.4-1. Doesn't seem to work - neither did the previous version.
And now I also can't uninstall it - getting response saying "Unable to uninstall Call notify".. Any idea what's wrong and how I can remove the app? |

Re: [Announce] Call Notify
Thanks for this real great app!!!
Notifikation of Email, sms and calls works fine. But there is no notifikation of IMs (skype). Further there is just a notification of the last event. E.g. if I recieve an sms it shows it by blinking in the statusbar. When I then have missed call, sms notification is replaced by the one for missed calls (same with email). So I just see the last missed event. |
