It's the center button between the direction keys. Could not do anything since it also appears that "clicking the screen" is the same thing as hitting that button in most cases.

EIther way though, I had to pull the battery.

Currently using F4 (menu button) But that may prove problematic on the road since i use that key to get to Maemomapper menus when I'm on the road. Other apps I'm not to concerned with.

Didn't try Esc, I'll try that later.

Here's an idea... might actually be a good one too. :)

How about using Xbindkeys and mapping a hardware key for us N800 users that would execute this simple command?

matchbox-remote -next

Anyway, open up Xterm, keep your browser running in the background if possible, and run that command in Xterm.

It's actually quite faster and easier to manage than the task switcher thingy.

Anyway, I like how you have that switcher button on the status bar. That's such a smart idea. :)

Quick question.

Do you think it's possible to hack something like
/usr/share/applications/hildon-home/homeclock.desktop
and have that instead display something like
/usr/share/applications/hildon-status-bar/hildon-status-bar-battery.desktop

I'm trying a few ideas but I'm not getting anywhere with them.

Basically I'm asking if there's a way to pull those status bar items out of the status bar and have them treated as though they were widgets.

Does that make any sense to you?

I think it might look pretty good if there was a way to remove the status bar alltogether.

Actually not mine. And I don't know whom.

I tried to copy the statusbar's applets to home's applets directory, but it doesn't work. I don't think u can find a source code of homeclock.desktop so u have to make a request to somebody for create such applet. I think it's not very difficult work.

I thought about it. You have to check the applets (battery or wi-fi, or BT, etc) very often so it will not be so comfortably if you will have to minimize all windows to look on the wi-fi signal...

I had a crazy idea to make all windows work in fullscreen mode by default and all this stuff (applets) will go on the System Desktop — It is a concept of new task switcher with its own desktop to show important info like a battery, tasks, CPU and RAM usage, instant wi-fi and BT buttons (on/off).
I don't know about the first idea (all windows in fullscreen), but System Desktop will be a real: it will be a part of skippy-xd.

That's an awesome idea!

The only thing is that I think you need to have "home" installed somewhere, otherwise you can't load up the background image and the desktop will just be white.

But still, you sir are becoming my new, personal hero! :D

Can you start a thread on your creative genius somewhere else besides this thread?

Kroll, I already have the application menu in the statusbar. What I can't figure out how to do is move the statusbar to the top-left and move the application menu (the bar that has the dropdown menu for each application) to the right of the screen like you have.

hm. You have to edit 89 line (status bar applet panel) - x=0, y=0, w=285, h=50 (my settings) and 85 (area that launches application menu) - x=255, y=0, w=400, h=50 (my settings).
Than restart hildon desktop (sudo killall hildon-desktop) or reboot tablet.

I got it to work with the echo theme, but by work I mean that the statusbar is in the correct place, the application menu is not. However I cannot seem to get this to work on any of the other themes (Yes, I have edited their files)

Kroll, could you send me or post a copy of you work in progress theme so that I can see what you did and how you did it?

I got it working now. But now I am having other problems. Skippy XD no longer works, when i press the switch task button the screen flickers and nothing else happens. I have tried reinstalling but have not had any luck.

Also, is it possible to have more than 7 icons in the statusbar without it going onto a second level? Is it possible to make applications start in fullscreen by default?

I know about flashing skippy-xd and had the same problem. In a few days Telescope (task switcher) will be usable in alpha version and you will able to use it...

I don't think that you can place more than 7 applets in the statusbar. May be you can find something in /theme/%themename%/gtk-2.0/gtkrc but I didn't find anything about nomber of applets...

It's possible if developer made his application fullscreen by default.

I gave telescope a try today and it works great. its much better than skippy-xd. If possible I would like to sugjest adding a close button to the telescope view. (I know one is there but it would be nice if it was a button, rather than just an aria to click on.) Also it would be nice if it used the desktop wallpaper rather than the included image.

as root: That fixed the problem for me! I don't know why the dependency was not resolved on its own because the package is in multiple repositories.

AFAIK, dependencies aren't automatically installed when installing from .deb file, only when installing from repository, so libimlib2 must be installed by hands. When (not 'if', with your help) telescope gets into Extras, this will no longer be a problem.

The battery icon will be changed and wallpaper will be changeable.
The first icon from the right — options, the second — closed windows (like in the Opera Web browser or like in PalmOS when you hold the «home» button). четверг — it is Thursday in Russian :)

Hey Kroll, I had an idea earlier and I don't think it's something that has ever been discussed before.

I know it's possible, but what are your thoughts of having multiple desktops for the N8x0 series? :)

I was thinking of having a main desktop, and on that, have like 5 personal launcher icons that would completely change the overall desktop theme depending on my mood or what I am currently doing at the time.

For instance, I would have one theme just for games, another for my electronic books, maybe a news desktop with RSS reader, a weather applet, clock, calendar, etc., yet another one for all of my medical apps, a desktop just for PIM, and probably a final one used only for listening to music.

What are all of the configuration files that would be required to backup and restore all of the settings on the desktop? Also, what would be the best way of switching all of these values back and forth? Would symlinking them be the best?

Everything on the desktop that would be either saved or loaded for the complete desktop theme would be the following...

Icons in the Task Navigator or even all of the icons in general
Icons and layout for Personal Launcher
All applets including each of their sizes and positions on the screen
Desktop background image
Possibly the current font be used
Personal Menu and all of it's settings
Hopefully Xmms along with where on the screen it's located as well as if it has a graphical equalizer, playlist screen, etc. attached to it.

And anything else that you can think of.

Does this make any sense to you? I could put up a few pictures to help you better understand.

Yep, you are reminding me about PalmOS. Heh, my Palm T|X is much more comfortable to use then n810...

Anyway, you are talking about new Window Manager. It's possible and Mitrandir (Telescope creator) thought about it other day. It's difficult, but it is possible. If he will go on with creating WM - i think he will use your ideas in this project...

And yeah, there's so many files to back up and restore that I don't trust myself doing it on my own. *lol*

I think probably the worst of all this would be the need to sometimes kill hildon-desktop which I'm sure would be an ugly transition from one complete desktop to the next.
