Because porting something from a VM language like Java to native code is simply not an easy task.

Yes, there's A LOT more devs for Android nowadays than for N900.

Porting a java application for Google's java-like language is really simple, there exists even applications that do the work for you. So yes, in this case it's easier to port the app to Android than to N900.

I got FrostWire to work as well but instead of Sun's Java I used Icedtea6 (based on OpenJDK) from the repos.

1. Install icedtea6 from repos via App Manager.

Then the rest is the same as lq_sunshine's steps.

2. Download the frostwire tarball
from http://www.frostwire.com/?id=downloads and extract it to a folder like /home/user/Mydocs/

Code:
tar -xvzf /YOUR_DOWNLOAD_FOLDER_PATH/frostwire-X.XX.X.noarch.tar.gz -C /home/user/Mydocs/

3. Launch it with

Code:
java -jar /home/user/Mydocs/frostwire-X.XX.X.noarch/FrostWire.jar

(note thate your Frostwire folder or archive name may be a different one, replace X.XX.X with current frostwire version number)

Dont know which is faster as I havent tried Sun Java, but I think the Sun version has to be licensed otherwise it expires in 90 days.
I could be wrong but read it in another thread.

Dont expect it to launch apps from /home/user, That is totally wrong. Write full paths, like /home/user/MyDocs/... That would work. The menu doesnt launch from a folder in the filesystem by default, kinda. You have to cd to the desired folder. I'd make it like this:
cd /to/folder/with/full/path/ && java -jar java-file.jar
And put that into the .desktop-file without an external launchpad.

Speaking of icons, I have Transmission on my phone. I have the icon in the app menu but when I try to add a shortcut to my desktop it doesn't show up in the selection list. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

hi and tnx for your help in getting frostwire running on the n900. unfortunately, i am unable to get frostwire working. i've tried loading frostwire-4.21.6.noarch on both microemulator and java. on microemulator nothing happens when i click the frostwire.jar file. in java, using x terminal, limewire starts to load but crashes when i get to the internet connection and username settings page. i searched for frostwire-4.21.1.noarch.tar.gz file but had no luck in finding it. the link u provided here is no longer valid. is there something wrong with frostwire-4.21.6.noarch? any suggestions or advice?

Re: Is there a Limewire like program for N900?

When I try to run it, it won't start. I get this in terminal:

Code:

1: Main.main([Ljava.lang.String;@1186fab)
class path entry = ../frostwire-4.21.8.noarch/FrostWire.jar
java.lang.ArithmeticException: / by zero
        at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main.getChosenSplashURL(Unkown Source)
        at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main.showInitialSplash(Unknown Source)
        at com.limegroup.gnutella.gui.Main.main(Unknown Source)

Any idea how I stop it from dividing by zero?

Re: Is there a Limewire like program for N900?

Using Frostwire version 4.21.2 bypasses the offscreen button problem.

tan 2011-07-06 06:27

Re: Is there a Limewire like program for N900?

You should give a try with version 4.21.2

Clear any of the Frostwire folders under /root/ and /opt/ before you start. (You will see two folders related to Frostwire under /root/ and you should delete both of them.

If you encounter a problem deleting one of the root folders start deleting from the inner folder following the tree structure.

After deleting the locked folder you may encounter a network connection problem, if that occurs restart your router.

I have tried versions 4.21.2, 4.21.5 and the latest version 4.21.8.

4.21.2 is the only version that worked for me. It takes about a minute (or more) to load up, but once it's done it works really fast & flawless.

You can dowload the old version from :
http://www.newlinux.ru/download/fros....noarch.tar.gz
