MeeGo will definitely bring more hardware choices (the Maemo situation so far, ie 1 new device every 1-2 years can hardly be called "choice" anyway), perhaps even to the point of commoditising the hardware.

But there's also a software side to it: because the OS will be fairly open, most of the hardware is likely to be too. So if it turns out that we don't like the manufacturer's MeeGo offering it should be much easier to install another Linux distribution without chroot hacks, being stuck to a particular kernel version etc. Won't it be great to be able to run the OS of your choice on the device of your choice?
