Simply one word: amazing!
Works fine for me. The N900 sends by email and by sms his current location. The photos were totally black, but we know that the quality from the front camera isnīt quite good.

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Also someone may want to send only SMS not email, because getting Internet up may be a problem and allowing smtp-server may be unknown if there is new SIM-card or WLAN-connection. Or it should just be able to tell phone to ignore failed attempts.

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Could you please add another option?
It should monitor the motion sensor and the charging status and after a threshold of movement or time without charging the phone should start to play an alarm sound as loud as it can.
This could be handy if you are travelling and you have to leave your phone unattended for a while (but near by) and someone wants to steal it or check out information on the phone.

- make sending SMS and mail seperate options. e.g. i want to set it up to send mails but not SMS. I haven't configured a number so now i see a message popping up saying "SMS has failed to be delivered to " or similar.
On the way, will come later tonight

Quote:

- explain better what is the password and when the user sets it.
This will be added also later tonight

Quote:

- make an option to use a different email provider.
I don't want to take responsibility for someone cracking the password to your e-mail :D For know I have selected the best e-.mail provider in my country with the most often visited page( we have 40 million people ) should be fast enough even with 1000 e-mails sent at the same time. I am using more than 40 character password and is hardcoded in the code. I have implemented my own e-mail client, that is specifically adjusted to that certain e-mail provider. This e-mail account is created only for use of the application, I will never use it for any other purpose. I don't have any info of how many and what messages are being send.

One more thing. Implementing e-mail client supporting different kinds of protocol is fairly complicated. I prefer to keep it simple and working :D

My intention was to increase the possiblity of finding the phone back, but maybe I can implement someday another app, that would prevent it from being stolen or lost :)

It tries to send an e-mail, if it does not succeed in specified time, it won't try anymore.

If you don't check any of the options in "mail" configuration window, you will not get any e-mails

But..., I have a version (not published yet for above reasons), that does not show itself in "Uninstall" part of application manager and does not allow you to remove it with dpkg :D I will upload this version later to the garage, tonight or tomorrow night

yep, i was sure about it
so...can you prompt a password request when user try to unistall it?

rachol 2010-04-17 15:33

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Yes, that would be an option, I will try to get it before tomorrow morning:)

The problem is, that it starts to get complicated, text messages for:
-config,
-uninstall,
-start reporting
-stop reporting

and optional:
-start only sms,
-start only mail,

Well, not so bad maybe:) Remember to store "passwords" somewhere else than your phone:P

i've found i little bug. when runnig config(after sms) it doesn't show "next" button but "finish" button instead!

This app sounds great, im always worrying about forgetting my phone in the pub or something, sometimes people can be honest but would be nice to know for sure that u could tell that it was still in the pub or had been moved to another location.

Cant wait for this to get to extras!

Thank you for your time and answering my comments.
Please consider if you don't want to support other clients to support the ability of changing the email account and password on the same email provider.
That is, I create my own account in onet.eu and configure it in the application.

rachol 2010-04-17 17:11

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

I will consider writing a complete e-mail client with good password encryption, but that requires a lot of work, so most probably it will come one day in later versions. I just don't want to make anything that would create some kind of a security risk.

The security risk i am talking is for example native e-mail client on nokia,
if you let me hold your phone for 15 seconds I am able to check all the passwords for your e-mails and a lot of other stuff. Please don't ask me how, I will not show it, will not write it, will not say it :)

Briefly:
I will take it under consideration, but in later version of the software.

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Rachol you are doing a great job, please keep it up

I havnet been able to test it my self but is it possible to get vital information in the email, like phone number and provider of the new sim card, that can always help to find the phone. I know sms will have the number but it is incase you do not activate sms.

also if he is only conecting to wlan to send the wifi name and ip, if you can get to the gps position and get near it you can ssh on the same network and or be easier to ping point it for example in a building with several floor (the stronger the signal the closer you get right) and if your savy enough - same network means getting into laptops, network drives etc. photos and documents are available making it easier to find the perpetrator.(unless he is also stealing the neiborgs wifi)
It seems like too much trouble to get your n900 back but i know id do it.

Are you planning to release the code and if yes under what license?

rachol 2010-04-17 17:56

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

I don't have plans for releasing the code for now... After it gets all the functionalities, have proper doxygen comments and it is secure to show the code and I am sure no one can break it, then I will consider releasing the code :)

I will also edit the first post, when the update comes.

While testing the application, please DON'T set the same password for every action, because you will not be able to configure anything anymore. I fixed it will be fixed in newer version.

This problem can be solved by taking a picture with the front cam only when Phone UI launches for example or when the screen is turned on or when Task Switcher is activated. Assuming the thief is making the call or playing with the phone with the screen facing toward him/her. This will 80% capture the face.

The positioning of the front cam is great and will not get blocked by the hand in both landscape or portrait mode.

@rachol: could you do something like this?

rachol 2010-04-17 20:54

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

I have implemented it already :) I am testing newer version now including:

-checking battery status,
-taking pics with front when keyboard slides out,
-possible to set auto-reply, you get notification on a phone number you have sent password from
-some small bug fixes
-more configuration options like possibility to start only e-mail or only sms notifictions and more...

I should have new version tested in less than hour, if goes well, then maybe 30 minutes

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

I just installed the new update and it seems to be not working?

it sort of hangs during install.

Loading simple Config module....
Creating backend....
Loading socket FrontEnd module....
Starting SCIM as daemon....
GTK Panel of SCIM 1.4.7

then it just sits there. I don't get a config wizard screen.
I've tried uninstalling imhere and reinstalling. still same.
Anyone have similar problem with the newer update?

EDIT: Okay. Seems the config windows does come up if I send an SMS with the previously setup config password. =)

I set start report if SIM card changes on...
I usually travel and change my sim card.. will it automatically start reporting?

Yes. That's what it is supposed to do if you have the second option enabled. It will only report once however unless you have enabled periodic reporting of sms and email. (and will also keep sending emails with front cam pics whenever keyboard slide is opened if you have that enabled. :p)

bachagabriel 2010-04-18 06:14

Re: [Announce] I am here - Request GPS position and more with SMS

Also I tried it out and I received the sms but not the email...
I've noticed the connection dialog keeps popping up. This happens when I'm on my GPRS connection or WLAN.

Am I not supposed to configure the email account from which the email is sent?

rachol, thank you very much! I think you should add feature: run configuration wizard after updating/reinstallation.

Please, fix bug with '-' symbol in email-address!

If you have previously installed "imhere" and you have configured settings at least once, it will remember all yours settings and it will not show the configuration after update.

Reason: I am planning to add an option of uninstall password, that will enable you to uninstall application only if the password is correct, so the outcome will be:

-If you configured it once and someone gets your phone, he/she is not able to get into configuration wizard by booting the phone or updating/upgrading application. Moreover without set by you password cannot uninstall the application.

I am also planning to add option of remembering the state of reporting, so if you send a message to start reporting, it will continue doing that after update/upgrade or reboot.

Those functionalities might come tonight or tomorrow night, I will let you know guys :)

Should I ask the user of a config password after update/upgrade?

Hmm... this is interesting... I don't know what might be the problem.
Edit: You might have configured "Always ask" in connection settings?

I am working on auto-connecting to the network, even if you have disabled networking in settings. It should do it in the background without the popup that comes currently. Unfortunatelly there seem to be a bug in some of the libraries provide by maemo, I am looking for a workaround, might take me some additional time

Just a thought, Could that person start the phone without simcard, and just go and DELETE the files of IAMHERE ?
Or put a script to delete them upon boot before they get started?
How about killing them in a terminal?

There is always an option to connecting to some WLAN if available, so after booting it might find some network and send an e-mail first.

It is linux world, you are root, you can do whatever :D

However,
In newer update I will try to make it as hard as possible for the user to find out where are the files and what is the running process :)
