so has anyone considered the possibility that upgrading pr 1.1 to qt 4.6 results in some serious issues.

Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
To me, far more significant than what version Ari Jaaski is running is what he had to say regarding mobile OSs and the internet. He's absolutely correct that if not already, certainly soon 'mobile OS' and 'mobile internet' are dead terms. That the 'mobile internet' never really happened.
And his point that with Maemo/MeeGo Nokia has positioned themselves well for future expectations of mobile hardware and software. They know they have the OS to compete with anyone. Now it's just a matter of MeeGo and Qt getting to a tipping point in terms of market share and consumer awareness. Now as to PR1.2...clearly, Nokia has not released RCs of PR1.2 for general testing because they want to tightly control test conditions, local versions, installed software, etc and maybe most of all, reduce the feedback noise level. IOW get truly meaningful feedback not just complaints. For all I care they can - and should - test PR1.2 as long as they want/need to. The important thing is when it goes out OTA to thousands and thousands of users, remember most who never used a terminal in their life, it just works and nobody has their N900 bricked or loses contacts, etc. etc. PR1.2 is not a big deal, not gonna turn my N900 into a N920 or anything. Probably actually of far more importance to developers than end users. It'll get here when it gets here. |

Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
It may also be that the PR 1.2 is just that, 1.2. It is not 2.0 or 3.0 or MeeGo or whatever.
The changelog is nice and the features it mentions are certainly welcome, but expecting PR 1.2 to CHANGE the N900 into something different is in my opinion wrong and misguided. I actually feel for Nokia, now that they have started on this path, they are kind of stuck with it. I bet you that even the more rational and emotionally balanced posters on this forum will feel a great urge to start 352345^n+1 threads about how PR 1.2 failed and how it is not possible to understand why it took so long to release it.... It's tough...but yes I also cannot wait to benefit from this life transforming miracle called PR 1.2 :-) V. |

Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
Seriously, PR1.2 will make a good device much easier to use. Isnt that we are all expecting? Ive had mine since the end of Nov. and some of the changes are very welcome. I hate waiting as much as the next guy and I think the fact that Ari kinda threw it in there that he was using a RC 1.2 was a snub to us....

If you don't continue to make sacrifices to Saint Texrat, he'll make your N900's USB port fall right out.

here you can find, but it's a chinease forum... http://maemoers.com/thread-3040-1-5.html |

Even now, simultaneous with the cries of "stop the overblown, boogieman warnings about Extras-devel" we also get posts condemning those "horrible developers" for putting untested code into that repo. Head or gut? Either way, you're getting hit. I'd like to see more open beta testing of Maemo software too, but I can understand how the very thought might give Nokia's lawyers the willies. I'll just keep hoping they can slowly adjust their internal processes to support smaller, more modular updates. |
Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
release for general public beta test? looked what happened to the early meego build
|
Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
There's a certification process that each public release must go through before release both for Nokia requires and third-party components (Flash). This process is involved and takes a number of weeks to complete, cannot be bypassed and must be restarted if bugs are found.
So, no, it's rarely as simple as Nokia just deciding not to release an update. :) |
Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
the pr 1.2 bring features that the n900 should have been originally shipped with, your basic gsm phone features with added Qtr4.6........

Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
The guys who shout out "horrible developers" should be ignored. By providing such warnings, Nokia is not liable legally in anyway and that guy who said that will be treated like an idiot by multiple guys from here. Even with all those idots, having extras-devel is a gondsend. If it wasn't available, we would not have at least around half the apps which are currently available to use. (well, either that or we'll have more buggy apps in extras-testing or extras just to push it up)
But if it's all closed off like it is right now for the firmware itself, it creates a even bigger number of users being frustrated. (points to Chuck Norris thread) Some bugs were fixed months and months ago. But we can't have it as Nokia want to package up with 300 other bug fixes and test it all out before releasing it MUCH later. Bigger OS'es with much bigger user base such as even "Windows" does not have such closed way of fixing issues. (hotfix, beta, rc then final) |

Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
I will only say that people ask quick and quality releases. Can't have both, period. I would rather have quality and late releases. In fact, if anything, what Nokia needs is quality and polish.

I'm of the "release early, release often" crowd and wish for faster releases even with more bugs. So obviously Nokia, and no company in the world, can really appease us both. Unfortunately because, even if Nokia (or generic company) setup a "devel" repository, for example - just for people like me that don't mind breaking their phones randomly... somehow - the people that want the polish and shine and late releases find their way there.. And then complain. No easy solution unfortunately :(. |
Re: Ari Jaaksi begging to be kicked
I don't mind waiting longer for a more polished or featureful release, provided I'm somewhere comfortable enough. Right now, I'm not happy with my N900's base functionality that I leave it on my nightstand most of the time.

I think it's safe to agree with what was said earlier about what would likely happen if testing was opened wide today: people would ignore warnings in the hopes of getting features and fixes before "everyone else" and all hell would break loose. Nokia would be blamed for the chaos. That said, I don't see the same sort of problem for a somewhat wider testing protocol that insists on a few hoops for would-be testers. When I tested heavily for Microsoft, I had to take tests, fill out questionaires, submit a reasonable amount of bugs, etc-- or be dropped if I was even admitted in the first place. OS testing is not for the fickle and faint of heart. |

I'm someone that can break a device and find a bug and then even help troubleshoot or fix it -- but I'm not about to apply for a job just to get devel software :(. However, I could see Nokia putting up an online 'test" that validates a fundamental understanding of Linux and development and assuming you pass getting a special URL to download "untested" software from. There would have to be a user-based infrastructure for that though, in case someone shares their URL they can disable the account. But - more to the point of these forums and the repo's (something people here *should* have control over) - Our current system of 10-day quarantine, 10 votes, and reset every promotion is very anti-"release early, release often" philosophy. If you're releasing patches and updates often enough.. you'll never get an app into Extras. So it just seems that the entire Maemo (and by extension Nokia) atmosphere is against the philosophy that I tend to prefer. |
