First I really appreciate the thoughts expressed. That was unexpected.

I don't want to look like a "childish quitter" so I'll think about what's been asked. That said, I'm still embarassed at not being a little stricter in that now-infamous thread. I don't have actual moderation duties in that thread so all I could do was talk, and in hindsight part of that should have included:

- strong warnings against filesharing;

- an earlier escalation to other moderators in the hope that one with jurisdiction there could edit threads as needed

If failure to do those things was incompetence, well, mea culpa.

One thing that was driven home for me in the outcome is that we need not simply more moderators but broader time zone coverage. I was only up due to being on call for work... and would have welcomed one or two others online to discuss the issue with in the background.

Anyway it's clear now what's what but I should have worked harder. I apologize to the community for that lapse. If I do stick with moderating it won't happen again.

Thanks all.

You know, I think this whole spat is a fairly clear example of Dunning-Kruger in action... Various people whose self-confidence is greater than their competence warrants start making claims and demanding action, more competent people point out the flaws in their reasoning, the first group get loudly angry and a generally-acknowledged hyper-competent individual second-, third- and fourth-guesses himself with 20-20 hindsight. To lift some quotes from the wiki linked to above:

“The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity." — William Butler Yeats

“In the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.” — Bertrand Russell

Texrat, you are a great donor of this open source community called Maemo community.
You do this with great devotion, passion, diligent, and humor. You do all of this on your own spear time, without any benefit but our appreciation.

I think that your resignation is an act of taking an over-responsibility that blew out of proportion.

Regardless whether links to leaked firmware are banned here or not it still would have gotten into the hands of many of the same people. Other forums don't have the same policies imposed here. Not once did Texrat encourage installing it and I don't think he should be labeled a scapegoat.

Re: Support Texrat for being a great moderator

I haven't bothered to read all tour posts and if someone mentioned this earlier then feel free to ignore me.

I was up in the wee (EST) hours of the morning as well. I stopped paying attention when the thread was only 3 pages long as I thought it was another hoax.

Got on this afternoon to watch my TMO soaps and saw the thread had gotten a little unwieldly. I read it to the end though and never once did I see Tex snap. Even after people were obviously being rude Tex just issued a mild caution towards the FW followed by a smile (God knows what he may have really been thinking inside). And what do you know, now Tex can say "I told you so b!tches!".

I thought about posting saying hes a much bigger man than I but by that time I had noticed that the thread was closed.

I had a 770 back in the day and was on here when it was ITT but I was just a lurker then (much more than now) and I do agree that there's alot more "noise" than there used to be. But the flipside is having a larger userbase is also great for the platform.

My advice is continue taking in stride because you're doing a pretty good job and besides, I thought I heard you mods get health benefits.

I know my posts won't have the greatest impact since i'm not a usual poster most of the times I only read threads and joined in the N900 crowd.

I'm a moderator on another forum and indeed I believe your course of action was the best, I joined the thread in the early beginning and kept reading until it was closed.

Lets face it, it wasn't an area where you could actively do something, you warned people that should be over 5 years old and have a brain that it could damage their device or not be a final version, you tried to guide the thread to keep it has controlled has possible.

Imho you did all you could and when you saw things were getting out of hand you escalated exactly like you should.

In my point of view your acting method was indeed the best and I could only hope all moderators would be the same has you in every forum I ever used of moderated !

I don't know if the reason for quitting was only this thread, and I sure do know moderation is hard work that takes us a few hours without getting any retribution and sometimes only the dislike of most forum members.

Hope you continue with us and that i don't get many crappy posts deleted from you ;)

Re: Support Texrat for being a great moderator

I thought Texrat handled it very well. Profesionally, actually. I stayed up till 5 am, and I just got online again right now (so what happened after is still sketchy to me). Bummer was taking abuse, sure, but it was pretty much deserved (at least until 5 am, I don't know what hapenned after). He was repeating his arguements even after he was told that they weren't relevant. And he was dishing out his own eloquent abuse, at that.
Texrat did what was right. Based on previous experience, he allowed the debate to go on, jumping in frequently to remind everyone what was going on, and to cool the debate when it got heated. Bummer can claim victory all he wants, but when the thread was developing Texrat took the appropriate and correct decisions.
Hats off to you, Texrat.

Re: Support Texrat for being a great moderator

First post here. I will be getting my N900 in a couple of days time. The threads about PR 1.2 can drive anyone insane. It's been told so many times by Nokia officials here that N900 will not be abandoned, in fact they are working hard to port MEEGO to N900 as they have declared N900's cortex processor as the reference hardware which is a good news for all current/future N900 owners.

Also if Nokia had to abandon N900, they wouldn't be launching N900 in other countries like Hongkong, India etc.

So people here need to relax and should help the newbie's to get acquainted with N900 as it is a device which has a lot of hidden potential which if utilized constructively will turn out to be a real competitor for OS like Android, Iphone etc.

Sorry for going offtopic. Coming back to the topic, this forum need people like texrat who are matured by all sense.

Thumbs up!

Thanks to nokia for N900 and I hope N900 continues to be be the first device which brings Innovation at its best.

Well, I don't know Texrat personally, but he is the kind of person who is always there if someone needs help.

In every new thread, he usually is among the first to answer and help where he can.

I haven't been on this forum uber long but the time I have been Texrat was always a cool person and now he's a mod he bring fresh life to this forum not only is he cool and level headed he has a since of humor. I've been on forums where mods and they way they act and handle the forum made me just stop coming ex. the sidekick forums back in the day they think cause they are mods they know it all and no one else knew anything but they didnt know my ties with danger and the tech dept for the sidekick and had to prove them wrong many a times got to the point I just gave up and stop coming and alot of people was disappointed cause I usually can fix there problem without them calling tmobile csr which people know the hassle of calling csr . Alot of people changed they phones cause I left lol. Bottom line is this is a great forum great people and great mods/adm. So keep up the good work and Viva la Texrat lol

The more I thought about it the less I liked the title to this thread. Don't get me wrong-- I appreciate it, but I'm a very minor player here. Many others have moderated a lot longer than I have here and deserve the kudos more... and none of them has shown the bout of exasperation I did earlier.

So I changed the title, and please: recognize your hard-working moderators and admin (Reggie) here. I can't hold a candle to what they've done.

Well i tried to change the title to make it " support Texrat for his great moderation on the PR1.2 leak thread " or something on those lines but it never changed after my first post.. That was the idea of the thread and it would be nice to switch it back to its original purpose..

I do agree that I love this forums, its moderators and its users and all of them are the best one can expect.

So the OP can't change his own header but a moderator can?

Why don't the moderators write the messages too -- it would save the rest of us a lot of trouble.

Re: Support all the great moderators here

Moderation is an art, not an exact science. And a very difficult art, at that. Which means that just occasionally one makes a judgement call, does the best one can in a situation and then looks back with the benefit of hindsight and thinks "You know, if I had that day over I'd do it slightly differently". That's the price we pay for being human. Don't beat yourself up, Tex, for making the best decisions you could in a situation you had no actual power over and no fellow mod around to discuss with. And that goes for all our mods who have on occasion to make difficult decisions in a forum with no formal posting or moderation guidelines (note: meego.com is creating guidelines before the crowds arrive for exactly this reason).

There are no formal qualifications for the post of mod. What we need is people who care passionately about the community and want the very best for it. After that, the ability to stay calm under pressure, make judgement calls and defend why you made them, and consider that sometimes you might have done better are the qualities we need. In all these Tex excels.

Personally, I think losing Tex from the mod team would be a tragedy for this place. But I admit to being biased. I suggested on twitter last night that we consign yesterday to the crack in the universe and unwrite it as it never really happened: I stand by that suggestion.
