Fairdo - but the original iPhone is many years old vs the N900 which is only 5 months old and is still being released in some markets. Plus of course the original iPhone does what it should have before being abandoned.

Bug fixes of course but here is what I realy realy want

a) portrait mode for lockscreen so you can unlock with one hand
(don't need portrait for desktop or browser)

I can unlock the phone with one hand easy, you just press the power button twice with your thumb, then use it to swipe the unlock. Give it a try

c) Integration of MSN Messenger like Skype
Add an MSN account - but no video calls yet.

Read the parts

a) I am talking about lookscreen when you look it to enter a lock code.

c) I did that but when I click in conversation - new IM - I only see the skype contacts.

Regards Markus

Try CTRL+SHIFT+R in any app and it rotates. Maybe, it is an easter egg and a hint at the next update. Just like it was with the browser prior to pr 1.2.

Do I need to click on CTRL + SHIFT + R everytime that I need to rotate the application?

Yeah and they must be running windoze :(

I bought a Linux phone for a reason... couldn't even test this feature with a mac.

I guess I am now waiting on Skype for new Mac & Linux clients.

But we still don't have video calls in the sense that 90% of my contacts have had video calls for 3+ years now: 3g video calls over a cellular network. I know exactly 0 people who have either an N900 or a Windows PC with a webcam & a recent version of skype (the conditions as I understand them to make a video call now). Maybe one day I'll find someone..?

It seems like Nokia did the minimum possible work - integrate an updated version of a third party library (skype) - to enable some use of the front facing camera. Nice, but not great & still not meeting my expectations for this great device.

I just wish that i have never updated it to PR1.2 I should've waited for the next release.. oh well..

Re: N900 Post PR 1.2 Update what do you think?

For me, the update was.. well, pointless.

It seems to have introduced more problems than it fixed, the ones it fixed never affected me anyway, and in the end there's nothing really new that I use. QT? That couldn't have been pushed as a dependency on a newer version of the hildon package? Doesn't seem like a fair justification for a whole new firmware release.

Seems to me PR1.2 was more about generating hype and buzz. Whatever the devs are viewing as innovative and progressive about this release, I just can't see it... I can however see the people of southpark yelling 'shenanigans!' and 'rabble rabble rabble'.

happy camper here.

no OTA luck so tried NSU about twenty times with "connection failure" errors before giving up. later on, tried ota again and all went well.
Didn't bother with emmc flashing, just the plain upgrade. restored from backup, downloaded all my apps again and everything is working fine.

Overall, seems a bit more responsive.
Not sure if I'm loving the new virtual keyboard, but otherwise, I'm happy! :D

Overall improvment BUT am i the only one missing the "search" function in the application manager?
And the browser fonts seem much smaller then before, even on highest setting.

Re: N900 Post PR 1.2 Update what do you think?

I have no idea what a lot of you are talking about.

What did you expect, fairy dust? 1.2 was a bugfix release. There's a list of bugs that should be fixed (and they are), and a few enhancements that were easy to do and a braindead monkey could implement them (type to search, who sent that message, etc), plus, promised QT and whatever stuff I don't understand like libStuff.

It delivered like Death itself. It works fine, bugs are fixed, leaks are plugged. Also, some stuff was in development, so they left it in, like rotation and a few previews. As an added bonus, some stuff is way faster, like MicroB, media player UI, camera.

How exactly is this bloatware? Or a disappointment? Is it not exactly as listed months before release?

This does not work on My N900 (version 10.2010.19-1; keyboard: "Suomi, Svenska").

I got another small update at about 2 a.m. today California time when I updated using App Mgr. Haven't seen anyone else mention it. I haven't seen any changes.

I waited for the PR 1.2 for a long time and I think that brought some functionality to the N900 and resolved some errors but I think it is not enough. I miss some things:

video calling
create folders in the menus
voice navigation
Voice Recognition

I have a friend who has a blackberry storm and can do what I do with the N900 and has many more features

Video calling works fine -- I've talked to Moscow from Calif using Skype to Skype, could see the twins!

The other side has to have an active webcam and up-to-date Skype.

It is definitely not enough, there's at least a 1.3 in the making. Hoping for more.

It was an interesting read up until you said Storm has the same features plus. This is simply wrong.

The list of hardware differences is humongous. I'll just tap:

Screen
BBS: 360 x 480, 3.25 in (83 mm)
N900: 800 x 480, 3.5 in, transreflective TFT

Camera
BBS: 3.2 MPx, 480 x 352 video
N900: 5.0 MPx Zeiss. 800x480 video

The list is extensive. N900 is superior in every way, save for a few where they both hit the technology limit. Plus, FM radio, transmitter, TV out, hardware keyboard, the works.

As for software, We're open. They have a wider feature set in apps, but next time he's hassling you, remind him that your phone doesn't revert to stone age when blackberry servers are down.

Well, I kid, partly, but N900 is a better hardware platform with an open if young OS (that will probably never grow up on this doomed device), whereas BBS is a mature product. Not that it doesn't have its quirks, but your friend probably never advertises the lack of decoder support, poorer browser, lockups, but boasts Office.

As soon as we can edit a spreadsheet we're going to take the battle to them.

I did a video call over Google Video Chat, was working pretty nice, including N900-to-N900. Handled poor WIFI surprisingly well.

Re: N900 Post PR 1.2 Update what do you think?

I haven't had much time to use it but there appeared to be an increase in battery life and some fixes of things that caused the UI to become unresponsive and cause CPU usage spikes, and that was my main gripe. The improved Qt behavior of an app i had already compiled and installed is nice. Now the number keys work for a certain UI widget, whereas they didn't before.

Seems all win here.

Re: N900 Post PR 1.2 Update what do you think?

Ive just got my phone back from the Nokia care centre, the morning after I updated the phone it froze and I couldn't get it up and running, so Ive only just had time to have a play around with it after the new update.

I cannot say that I am disappointed as there have been some nice enchantments, the battery life seems better, skype video, portrait for the web, Im for Facebook, and it does seem that bit faster. but admittedly I was hoping for a bit more.

Regarding the news that they are not going to update to meego, It doesn't really bother me, but I do hope they do keep working on the Maemo platform and continue with software updates and improving the phone and functions at least for 2-3 years which will see most owners through there providers contracts , at the same time I hope we get lots more applications, which are really lacking.

In truth I'm not sure how motivated developers, maemo and nokia will be bearing in mind Maemo are not part of the future plans.

Only time will tell but I lets hope they do not let Nokia N900 customers down after we bought into this fabulous phones potential.
