Sorry, i still have the issue with the replaced binary..

This is excellent and works fine. There is a slight pause before each voice sound byte. Also cant get past the first level due to the Enter key not working. Hoping for a fix so my 5 year old son can also become addicted - hes just discovered RTS

Didn't work here. Replaced /opt/maemo/usr/games/opendune with your binary (ungzipped), is that correct? The game works but it doesn't accept <ENTER> nor any combination with Ctrl, Alt or Shift.

Yeah the performance is great other the the slight pause that happens before playing sound most of the time.

I didn't hear any music either? Not sure if these issues are related to OpenDune or to the port itself. Good work regardless, much more playable than playing the original version in DosBox for me.

Are you sure you want that? :)

I was like 15 years old when I had my Dune II-addiction, and I was not sleeping in a week, just playing the game and going to school.. ;)

Have you thought about entering this is the coding competition? I know it's based on opendune but I reckon the porting effort makes it worthy of an entry.

Any comments/suggestions/proposals on the problem of not getting past level 1?

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

Well, I started to complain it didn't work, but discovered HAM says nothing if WGET fails. Uninstalling and reinstalling a few times dislodged the DNS and it went ahead.

Strongly recommend using CLI for the first install.

Anyhow, great, great work. Dune is a monument.

And finally, any speed increase would be much appreciated ;)

ETA: Drat, it hanged on the first level as I was trying to have it build a refinery. I was under attack. Sigh. The intro again.

You may tap the screen to skip the intro.

opendune_0.3-1maemo2 fixes the return key issue and fails installation if data was not downloaded correctly.

Updated maemo1 version with maemo 2 but there is the return key issue. Maybe i have wronged something?

Damn you, Smoku, damn you to hell! You would port this AFTER I lost my stylus. Hopefully I'm getting some new ones soon, lousy eBay.

Anyhow, awesome work, even though I can't really test it yet.

You rock, but are also damned. :D

By the way, I wonder how many people in the long run are going to be fired from there jobs because Smoku is porting such awesomeness? 'Cause I definitely envision myself spending more time than I should just playing games at work :D

I have to wonder what you're going to work on next. May I suggest something like xu4 or exult? Those would simply rock on the N900.

Still stick at high score screen. Tried pretty much every variation I could think of. Using latest release

Patola 2010-06-03 04:58

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

I confirm Bratag's position, installing opendune 0.3-1maemo2 did not solve the <ENTER> key issue:

Code:

[user@n900 user]% dpkg -l opendune | grep opendune
ii  opendune                                            0.3-1maemo2                      Classic Real-Time Strategy game

If we sets sound effect to off is there a chance to eliminate the little stuck problem? Even it is not a big problem...

Strange.
I haven't played through the whole mission, but I'm able to start a game by pressing enter and skip the dialog pages with enter, so it definitely works.

Are you sure the intro screen is enter key related?

Do you plan a N8x0 version too? That would be great ;)

The only thing that we noticed it's that we can't pass the insert-name screen. Maybe in the original game we need to press Esc and not Enter? I don't remenber...

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

I'm pretty sure it was enter..

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

Is there a way to have the game fill the entire screen?
After installing Timidity I hope to get the MIDI music working, but alas. Dune 2 is without it's awesome music.
Is that a hard thing to get working, Smoku?
Other then that it runs really great and I have no "pause" or hiccups when I click units etc.
Stock clock settings on PR1.2.

I was previously unable to launch the game using the icon, so I grabbed the latest version just now from Extras-Devel and it worked, but the intro video lacked subtitles. All other text appeared normally though. Weird.

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

I tried installing this just now and it would not completely install. So I did what any Debian geek would do. Run 'sudo apt-get install opendune' from the terminal.

It was erroring out due to a 'sed -u' the -u not being an option supported by the version of sed that is on the N900.

So I 'vi /var/lib/dpkg/info/opendune.postinst' and removed the -u from the sed line and then it installed fine, with the zenity dialog and all :D

Now to try to play it, but just letting you know.

sed version 4.2.1 that I have installed on my Arch Linux install has a -u option for 'unbuffered' but the version of the N900 is 4.0, and apparently does not.

It's only in the high score screen where you have to enter your initials that it stops. Not the start game screen. I could try and remap <RTRN> to output "Return" instead of "KP_Enter" when pressed with the blue arrow, but as the game isn't accepting blue arrow + keys for the numbers yet, I knew it wouldn't work.

It installed fine on mu N900. But I may have GNU Sed installed ;)
Thanks for the info. Fixed in repo now.

Installed this version. Can't get it to skip the intro sequence, tried short and long taps on the screen (long taps pause the intro sequence for the duration of the tap, but nothing else), also tried every key.

Edit: Waited it out. Also found no way to enter numbers on the save game screen, and the first attempt to place a concrete slab alwas complains "cannot place foundation here" even though a second click in the same place places it just fine.

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

I noticed this too.
The game registers click before moving the mouse to new position, even though SDL layer first moves the mouse, then sends the click. Fixing this will be hard - it's in the original game code, not the DOS emulation layer.

Couldn't one make the sdl layer forward only the move if a key, say ctrl, is held down when the screen is tapped or tap-dragged? Then you would have normally move+click, but only move with a certain key pressed.

smoku 2010-06-05 07:18

Re: OpenDUNE - Dune II remake

Good idea.
In 0.3-1maemo5 you may Fn+Tap to move the mouse without clicking.

Presumably wherever it downloads the data files was unavailable when you installed, or you had no active internet connection - give it a little while and try again, i've had no problems with it fetching the data files and i'm assuming no-one else has either from the lack of mention of problems.

Hi guys. Thanks for fixing the return/enter issue Smoku. I now get past the highscore inpjut screen at the end of level 1. Another problem arises now though - the security sequencde that asks me about armaments of different units doesnt seem to accept the answers. I suspect its because I cannot enter a capital letter and enter 'light' ,'medium' or 'heavy' instead of 'Light' 'Medium' and 'Heavy'. Has anyone else encountered this?

Tried about 2 dozen times over the space of 3 days, from home, from my 3G connection and from a McDonalds wifi.
