!!Nokia N900!! 2010-06-23 21:49

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

;)i am switching to 2.5G all the time & rarely doing browsing. Only making & recieving calls ( sometimes a lot) + daily updating my application manager once/day to check if any new updates are out.

With the above i have a battery life for 3 days & really happy..:):D:p:o

my biggest problem with my n900 actually is the bad battery live (respecting my using behaviors).

I'm always online with skype, icq and sipgate, download emails one time per hour and my battery lasts only 7 hours :-(

I liked the idea to have a "computer" in my pocket, but like this it's not quite usuable.

I bought some more batteries, but changing battery twice a day sucks. When I'm at home, my N900 is on charger all the time.

I know, that it's not Nokias fault, but that's so disappointing.

What are your experiences?

MPW

My 1-year old laptop lasts about 2hours when running on battery; so 7hours with N900 is not that bad :)

Now, the laptop has the duel-core whatever running; 4gig of ram; so it is a bit more powerful on paper; but I actually do not do much on it other than running a spreadsheet or viewing pdf and being connected to the net.:D

If I use it for any reason then time is much shorter.

And sometimes it's really bad depending on application. For example, on Saturday I took phone off charger -- green light, fully charged -- used eCoach for 45 minutes, and 3 hours later my phone was giving me the low battery sound and warnings (i turned it off at that point). So less than 4 hours from fully charged to nearly dead battery.

As other may have mentioned, I would install Conky and BatteryGraph to get a better idea of what are actually running on your N900. I think you may have something running/chewing up the CPU% that you are not aware of.

For my case, I had a week or so of really low battery performance(ie. the unit ran of juice in less that 5 hours). After poking and looking, I found out that two of my recently downloaded widget were the problem - ie. they came on periodically even though the unit was on standby.

cheers

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

N900, to use its resources fully to at least resonable long enough, you need bigger battery (2400 mAh) compared to the original (1350 mAh) one.
Using WLAN or GPS-tracking w/ bigger battery gives you usually just enough extra juice to get through one day.

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

Use the 'overclock' kernel with low voltage or ideal profile may also extend the battery performance. However, one needs to be comfortable in working with such setup and needs to be FULLY aware of and ACCEPT the consequences. With my current setup, my unit loss is about 10%/day while in idle mode(ie. no connectivity, no active app open).

All those ideas are good people. But you miss out on the problem. Performance tweaking comes later.
Can we have some more details on your case, please?
Have you done the batterygraph install yet? Which programs have you installed (with version number pls if you used other than extras, like testing or even devel)?
How many widgets are on your desktops and which?

MPW:

You say

"When I'm at home, my N900 is on charger all the time."

In other words, when you are home your N900 hasn't much mobile freedom.

You slould buy an external charger.

The ones I have bought (Hong Kong) work perfectly. Cost about $10.

You say that swapping batteries sucks. I guess, for about ten seconds + reboot time. The rest of the time you get the mobility you paid for.

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

I get 24hrs plus when never connected to GPRS (2.5G), using stock voltages, using wifi here and there to check mail, check for updates on facebook, etc, no calls, no sms, coulple games, when I'm bored at work, maybe some light reading in the PDF Viewer, but although 24hrs is a lot what I don't like is that, it could be less with constant use because battery level drops fast, but I think I'm just paranoid because with other devices (old old ones) u can't see the % of battery left, but with this device you have ways of keeping a good eye on it. I'm satisfied with my battery for now though. I'm satisfied with the device on the whole.

usually mine lasts between 3.5 and 7+ hours depending on usage (and some hidden variables)

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

My n900:

Titans power kernel with limits set to 250 and 900. almost all apps from extraswith a few from testing. facebook and skype are always on, almost always using wifi, if not then 2-2.5g only. screen brightness at 2/5 bars. always on silent mode, but do have haptic feedback on for touchscreen... I text, skype, browse web, and listen to music throughout the day...

My phone will last about 3.5-7 hours. I almost always plug it into usb to charge while at home, and between classes during the day at school.

got some suggestion. Why not try to put in one of these in your n900? I can assure you great battery life.

our n900s are pretty much turning into nuclear submarines...

There is a fix for Hildon from MohammedAG, that really improves stand-by battery life. Can't find the site again though.

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

Just to share my battery life result:

I started using my N900 about 3 months ago, current battery life still approx 1day to 1.5days. WIFI is on 24hrs, 3G, average call usage, music and general tweaking around some applications. I don't save on applications and widgets (what's the point of having this great phone when you need to skim on the cool features, right?). I'm not familiar with tweaking the kernel stuffs (though I wish I did) so it's original settings mainly.

But I sure wished the N900 battery could last longer. My 2yrs+ Blackberry Curve 8320 lasts up to 3-4days (with 24hr WIFI, emails and min phone usage)

rickysio 2010-10-21 06:33

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

Generally my N900 dies in 1.5days, but if I push it haaaard, it dies in 6 odd hours. :(

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

Everyone with bad battery should try to learn about PowerTop. It is not easy understanable.. but very good. Also Top -> "p-key" or "m-key" to see processes and memmory usage is good.

I have about 3 days usage on one charge... if i don't go 1.15ghz and see video or something heavy. Just normal use. I am constantly using wifi or 3g.

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

Just want to share my experience about the battery. I think the problem is the nokia original charger not the battery. When i recharged my n900 with proporta usb turbo charger 3400, the battery lasted longer compared to when i use nokia charger. Weird, i don't know why. However, the charging time takes longer using proporta.

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

Hi my N900
last 4-6h if used as a PC and 2-3 days if used as phone.

I am happy with it.

I am online only if needet (auto disconnect) and i have switched off the atomatic indexing.

I'm thinking of getting a second battery, or that Nokia extra power thingy. I believe should come in handy.

I dont think MfE is to blame.
I dont think IM online is to blame.
I dont think Ovi maps is to blame.
I dont think MicroB is to blame.
Ultimately, they all are to blame.

I have disabled every possible function of the phone and discovered it made no difference (lowest brightness, all radio intennas off - except phone function, vibration off, zero multi tasking) and battery drops life like a ....

(View The graph)

- Internet browsing through the wifi drains the battery AS fast as 3G.
- When the phone radio is offline (underground train) the battery stabilises but still falls. What does this tell me? well that no application is sucking the battery excessively. No extra devels app uses the phone radio so this filters this possibility.
- Idle. Not really, connected through 3G (check emails etc, but not online on any IM account). But nothing else. Kinda idle i guess.

I know, with long testing that 2G is wonderful to the battery life. But who can seriously advise that we use 2G on a daily basis? it's fine for IM chat etc but when you have to open a browser window the pain returns.

Maybe these apps could make your life little easier:

http://maemo.org/packages/view/autodisconnect/

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/M...ection-applet/

And about going out of network reach. IIRC all phones what I have had from Nokia drain battery completely quite quickly if the network is not available. It seems that phones use maximum power to establish connection when in low signal strength areas.

.edit
IMO best way to benchmark battery usage is to disable almost everything and compare battery-eye/batterygraph figures between people who have sent their picture here (there is lots of threads about battery usage here in TMO, just use power search). Trick is to minimize the variables when comparing with other people so that same network mode, apps, widgets etc. are disabled/used. My recommendation is to start from level zero where almost everything is disabled (best would be freshly reflashed n900 with no apps installed and all network apps (widgets,IM etc) disabled except phone)

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

http://h-2.abload.de/img/screenshot-20101021-095ayi.png

Settings:

- 3G always on,
- push-mail with microsoft exchange and nokia messaging with 4 mailboxes constantly connected to the server and waiting for emails
- writing a lot of emails
- displaybrightness at 4
- about 1h music with default media player
- browsing in the internet about 1h with microb

all this combined about 13 hours and still more than 20% of battery left!
so i can't complain :D

Don't forget wall charger for BL-5j too. It comes in handy if u wanna recharge the empty battery without using phone :)

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

I think it's import for me to mention this.

I have had my N900 for a year or more and I never had excessive battery problems until yesterday, I noticed that I had about 7 hours battery life.

So after thinking about the changes I made and looking at conky. I found that there was an application called "hulda" that was taking 95% of my cpu time, etc. I couldn't find any reference to "hulda", I then remembered that I added the dual/2g/3g application, so I removed it, and rebooted the n900.

When looking at Conky again, hulda had gone and my battery life is now back to normal.

I hope this helps someone.

I am not quite sure about Maemo, but Skype is one of the biggest battery drainers on my Symbian phone.

Re: ~7 h battery live, who get's less?

I think the problem with this phone is that its not ur everyday phone. its more of a computer!! N i cant keep my hands off it..so all these things drain the battery..but on average i can get thru a day. If i use it constantly meaning listening to mp3s, browsing on 3G n skype plus IM then 4 hours...

most of my mates who have N900 n dont use it much get like 2 or 3 days!!! but dats cos they havent realised ita full potential

I think the thing that kills the battery is MULTI-TASKING!!! if we couldnt multitask we wouldnt be on the phone so much!!
