Thank you for reporting.
Can you, and all the other where the app crashes, please do
the search with only one search category enabled.
I would like to see if all search categories have this problem.
So far, I found one bug in the calendar search.

Thank you
nicolai

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

Sure nicoli,

I did my testing and here is my feedback:
1. For Contacts only search - works FINE
2. For Calendar only search
2a) Works only in Notes but cannot open notes from scout instead calendar is shown
2b) Does not search within birthday events or appointments
3. For Conversation only search- the search is shown real-time but crahes always
4. If there is no results for that search text, no feedback message is displayed in results saying "No search results"

Nicolai

Good application but crashes every time I turn on the conversations search. My conversations are 500 in nos and could have non-english (indian) characters.

Cheers

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

Excellent application, good job for bringing this mandatory and useful function into the Smart phone world.

I just came from the Palm O/S world where you can globally search any calendar or notes entry. Example, I have over 10 years of PIM data, and I can search & find when I purchased an item or when I visited some place etc..

So you can imagine my disappointment when I ported all this data into my new, latest Nokia, to find it is useless. Are all Smartphones this agricultural?
Outlook can search, so why can't these devices?

I few anomalies with Scout to report:

Searching Notes:
Finds the notes item containing the text, but when I click on the notes item, it takes me to today's calender, not the actual note.

Searching Calender:
Will only search & find calender entries containing the desired text in the first few months of my calender (ie 1997).
Also will not find text in non-timed 'all day' events.

Keep up the activity, supporting your good effort.

Yes, I can only open the calendar applications with month,
week or agenda view. I don't think it is possible to jump
directly to the note edit window. So one additional user step
is necessary. But the next scout version will have an enhanced
preview window for calendar entries.

This is strange, no results at all? But maybe it is related to
jackchats problem (see below)

Still didn't find text message which lead to a crash on
my device. Still trying to reproduce this behavior.

Well, isn't the empty result list feedback enough. The wait indicator
in the program title, the inactive textfield and the "stop" label on
the search button indicate the search is active. If the search is done
the textfield becomes active again and the searchbutton label
changes to "search". I think there is no need to indicate an
empty search result.

Ha ha ha.
While developing this app, I limit the calendar search result to
100. As I don't have more than 100 entries I forgot to disable
this limit. It will be fixed in the next version.

Conversation still crashes for me. I hope there is no limit too on conversation as I have over 2000.

All the other search options work very well.

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

No other search limits :-)

nicolai 2010-07-20 07:22

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

New version (0.3) in extras-devel.
* fixed bug in calendar search (crashed for non-ascii
(not properly utf-8 encoded) text).
* removed search limit for calendar entries (prior
version searched only the first 100 entries)
* add details view for calendar search result
(please give feedback, which additional entry details
you would like to see)
* add again a details view window for conversation search
result. But this time it shows the message history as well.
(all messages seven days before and after this result entry)

I still don't know why the conversation search crashes the app
for some users.

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

Every new version sees major updates! I can't thank you enough for this. The new solution for message chains is simply outstanding.

Some minor suggestions: I would also like to have the "where" field under calendar entry details. And some words in the menu could begin with capital letters (settings and case sensitive), just a personal preference.

Which search categories? All or only the conversation search.
Btw, what happens if you use a query which is definitly not
there. So the result list should be empty. Does it still
crash.

Directly typing, so probably all. However if I switch off conversations, it works.

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

Thanks for the update Nicolai!

My reports:
Contacts, Calendar, searched existing name:
It showed contact and birthday (calendar), no crash
Contacts, Calendar, searched 'flurk' (nonsense):
No results, empty screen, no crash

Contacts, Conversations, Calendar, searched existing text:
Crash after result screen filled up (which is after 5 results)

Contacts, Conversations, Calendar, searched 'flurk':
No results, app crashes after a few seconds (it does look like it's searching before crash, load animation circle is shown in top bar)

Case sensitivity had no influence on the above

Hope it helps!

And of course, there's search over file contents, too (.doc, .pdf, etc.)

In pr1.2 there is typing in email list view to search on email headers so maybe there is an index already made somewhere that scout can access??

Not sure

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

This is ridiculously fast and excellent. I'm trying to beat the crap out of .5, but I can't make it crash. :) :( But I did notice something strange when creating the package, I had to soft link

Code:

libgettextlib-0.17.so to libgettextlib-0.14.4.so
in order to get it to build. Maybe no one has updated gettext for PR 1.2 or something. Strange.

Anyway, great work and good luck!

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

Hi Nicolai

The latest version still crashes and quits when I add the conversation search. It shows the results fleetingly before quitting.
Is there any error log I can retrieve and post here.
I have around 2500 messages in 500 conversations which might have non-english characters.

Any help!!

I tried the apps but it ends suddenly.. not sure if it is because I have some double byte characters (Chinese) in my calendar, conversion and contact ....

here is my new Application.
Scout - Search Contacts, Conversations and Calendars.
You can search for text in Contacts for names, nicknames
usernames, addresses or phone numbers.
Calenderentries with summary or description text.
And text in your conversations.
It is currently in extras-devel. It may crash sometimes
but is mostly useable.

An example is shown in the screenshot for searchtext "test".
The search result category is indicated by the different icons
on the left side (contacts, calender, sms). I use two different
kind of icons for sms and chat conversations and for each
two different icons (with and without the blue arrow)
to distinguish received and outgoing messages.

Selecting a search result has different actions:
-opens a contact details dialog for contacts
-opens the calendar app for calendar entries (agenda view)
-opens a new window with the full message text for
conversations.
I wished I could open the conversation app for the conversation
search result, but I couldn't find a way to do so.

This is my entry for the coding competition. I want to announce it
here and now, first, to collect some feedback and second, because
I know there is a some demand for such an app.

Enjoy,
test and
give feedback.

nicolai

The application and idea is VERY nice. Although I believe you can do something else and win the coding competition....

Make this application a Windows Search/Spotlight scale. Integrate it directly into the OS. Say Im at one of the homescreens. I pull out the hardware keyboard and type "Fox"

It could pull up 3 results:

A contact called James Fox. A click on him calls him. A click hold on him opens a context menu with "Send SMS", "Videocall", etc.
A calander event that says "James Fox's birthday". Clicking on it would simply open calander and take me to that event. Holding could make other options which I cant think of right now for this event.
A application called MicroB. In its description it says "MicroB, the browser based on FireFOX" reason being why it shows up in the results. Clicking on it would open the application.

If we put a adress say, "www.google.com", the search application should be able to see (because of the www. and .com) that it is a web address.

It could pull up 2 results

A option saying "Open 'www.google.com in your default browser (nameofdefaultbrowserherewhichgetsitfromsystemsett ings)"
Pidgin, which has GTalk access which is made by Google

Also typing something like "shutdown" should show the first option "Shutdown Nokia N900"

The idea is GREAT but IMO it needs to go alot further. BTW, Im not sure why you choose NOT to index things (space?)

Besides that, thanks for the great application.

Note: I just noticed that the event ends today. Oh well. Hope you win and that gives you the will to see the points I pointed out :)

nicolai 2010-07-21 10:06

Re: [Announce] scout - search contacts, conversations and calendars

@daperl
Thank you daperl. I tried hard to crash this app, no success.
I never wished so much to see one of my apps crashing :-)
I must admit the buildprocess is totally obscure to me. I use
autotools the first time. (I took the maemopad example from
the maemo 5 developer guide).
All my other apps (widgets and plugins) were simple enough
for good old handmade makefiles.
I wished I had used it here too.

@PipoXtreme
Thank you for your patience and effort. I hope
I can fix this.

@doraemon_eric
Yes I tried many queries with different multibyte character and
even hacked my conversation and calendar entries,
in order to insert multibyte (arabic) text.
No crash. I don't think it is related to text encoding anymore.

Maybe it depends on the different IM-services.
Now, I have to register some accounts. I use only
icq at the moment.

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions.
No indexing, because it is quite fast and I don't need to
update a index. But yes for a general purpose desktop search
I would prefere some indexing framework (like tracker for example).
Competition or not, there are still users which cannot use
this app. This bothers me and I want to get this fixed.

Nicolai

couldn't find a scout section at bugs.maemo.org, so here goes:

scout 0.5 installed, searching within conversations crashes the program before search is finished. reproducability: always.

locale: sv/fi (scandinavian).
active im accounts: skype, msn (pecan)
inactive, but used im accounts: ovi, facebook (jabber), gtalk.

This crash is very strange. I have the same locale, and tried to get the crash by connecting to IM accounts (skype, facebook, msn pecan) but the app works just as flawlessly as ever before... No crashing whatsoever within conversation search!

There must be some other common factor among those whom it crashes for.

nicolai, why don't you create a debug version for edgar2 that maybe prints some stuff to the console or a log file. I ran from the console a few times hoping to see something interesting, but there was nothing.

Ah, thank you for this hint. Now I don't have to search
for an IM-Service which could cause this.
And no, no error log. Maybe I should build a version
with logging.

Ok, I attached a debug version.
Just the executable file "scout".
Please copy and unzip the file in your home directory
and start it with
Code:

run-standalone.sh ./scout > scout_debug.log
This version prints all messages and the username
for the sender and receiver of your messages.
Please don't send me this file, as it contains your private
messages. If you encounter an application crash
look at the file
(or the last lines with "tail scout_debug.log") and
tell me if you found anything strange.

thanks in advance
nicolai
