Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)

To expand/clarify what I was asking: There are a group of people who think that apps are generally unnecessary once you have a good enough browser. Even google mail works better over a browser than N900's email implementation. To these people, AppStore war is moot. What would you say to them...? ps: I think the form factor of your device affects your experience greatly... I've had a much more positive experience with my Milestone (3.7" screen @ 800x480). It also looks/feels more 'adult' heheh |

No, apps are essential - I don't think everything can be done in the browser, certainly not on low power/mobile devices. Using the browser in place of a dedicated application is inefficient for a start and leads to a sub-optimal user experience. I would much prefer that Maemo had a dedicated "Ovi Store" application that took care of everything from finding an app to downloading it and finally installing it - currently it's a mixture of two applications (MicroB and App Manager) and neither accomplish their task very well, in particular the latter is verging on unusable now (because it is so slow). Without any ability to queue Ovi Store downloads, trying out an application on a whim is unlikely to happen when the App Manager takes so long to do it's job. Fundamentally though it's the lack of integration between the various "parts" on the N900 that result in such a horrible Ovi Store experience on the N900 - if it's anything like this on Symbian^3 then Nokia will be laughed out of the market. Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
Gotta agree with the comments regarding the filter functions on ovi. If their is an option to choose "All apps" or maybe just "All games" even, I have not found it.
Even when I go in to catagories and select Games, the top of the page says "Games>All" but it still only shows the top ten free downloads. Thank god we have the repos I say. |

Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
I tried to make my first payed purchase a couple of nights ago of the angry birds level pack. It failed.
I contacted support. They sent me a link to the same damn location which repeatedly downloads as a 0kb .deb file on my handset. No amount of pleading with the support people that I had already tried that link multiple times from different connections would convince them that there was a problem. After about 10 minutes I realised ****...this is a $2 piece of software. My time is worth far more to me than that. What a joke. Having the receipt and my confirmed payment why can they not just send me a .deb file via email to fix the problem? Nokia are completely unable to deal with this platform if anything goes pear shaped. Free ovi downloads work fine btw. |

what about a
"its awful, Ive never used it and never will' option ? XD |

Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
- I hate how it's web browser based and there is no separate OVI Store app for it.
- I hate how you have to login every time. - I hate how I have to sort it by "New" every time to see new stuff. - I hate how it doesn't display all the apps in one big list like HAM/FAM. Nokia should at least make it similar to iPhone/Android Market app where it shows you screenshots, details all in one page. |
Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
It's true, the OVI store app sorting system leaves alot to be desired.

Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
whats to use on it for nokia n900 owners? rubbish

Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
Just read this on the Ovi store FAQ:
"Note that purchased content can be re-downloaded only up to 5 times." Not buying anything else until this is changed. |
Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
On the appstore you can download it unlimited times + updates on up to 5 devices.

Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
Ovi store for N900 is a pathetic excuse of a store. What an awesome way to treat customers of a 'flagship' device..sarcasm.

Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
That's a rather ********* policy. With the amount of reinstalling people might do when testing extras-devel apps (if it comes to that) you'd hit that pretty quickly. I know I've already re-flashed once and re-downloaded apps because of it.
Oh well, maybe it's time to make use of those scripts that backup everything. Either way that's a good way to kill more sales of software. [sarcasm]Good job Nokia.[/sarcasm] |
Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
I've tweeted this thread again to Peter (marketing) and Ovi Store - both have ignored previous tweets so I'm not expecting any reply, they only seem to "tweet" when they have something "positive" to spin and go into hiding when challenged by negative feedback rather than acknowledge it and try to address or otherwise overcome it.
It seems the Nokia embracing of "social networks" extends only as far as one-way "look how good we are" posts when it's patently obvious the company won't be around for much longer unless things change dramatically, and this poll is a fairly stark example of how badly they are performing yet the Ovi Store tweeters and Nokia marketeers seem to be blissfully unaware of how poorly their efforts are being received. Considering the dire straits Nokia are in they would be well advised to discuss more and ignore and bullsh1t a whole lot less. |
Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
No good can come out of publicly discussing and raising further awareness of an issue that they're already aware of and have no immediate plans of addressing.
It's just the way public communication works. |

If it were true that Nokia have no plans to address the flaws in Ovi Store then, to be quite honest, the sooner they go out of business the better for everyone concerned (and I say this as someone who has supported Maemo since before the 770 went on sale). The future is about apps and unless Nokia get it right they're finished. |
Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
I do buy things from Ovi. However, I do not like the experience because there are a lot of small annoying things. For example, I just purchased both new Angry Birds level packs. After buying the first I got notification that "You did not request a receipt" (translated from Finnish). Well, that was because I did not get to choose, I would have wanted one. So when purchasing the second level pack I payed extra attention to not to miss the possibility to request a receipt. I just could not find a place where the choice is made. And as it seems, it is not in my personal settings either.

Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
Its allright, but its filled with useless stuff in my eyes.
Commercials/trailers litter the media section, useless trial apps all over the place, few apps Id even consider if they were free, etc. Did buy Angry Birds level pack, and Zen Bound though. For a N900 user the community apps just... well... its ****ing awesome. Id probably use Ovi more if it was actually integrated with app manager. For my N97 I never bought a single thing. |
Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
I hated when Ericsson bacame Sony Ericsson, if what I smell from all this turmoil is a "Intel Nokia", I lost my faith in Nokia. The last 10 years I "word of mouth" explained to people and friends why they should get a Nokia, I just cant say that anymore. Sorry Nokia, you made me pay $500 to be a beta tester.

Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
I've now installed about a dozen apps from the Android* market place, all without delays of any kind. I just received two updates this morning, and the update process is lightning fast with zero delays, just how it should be. And how it's absolutely not on the N900 - updating a single application on my N900 takes up to 5 minutes or longer, depending on how much of a pain in the @rse App Manager wants to be.
This cr@p really needs sorting out as a top priority for Maemo6/Whatever if it's going to be targeted at mainstream consumers but I doubt it will be and will be just one more reason why Nokia and Ovi continue to fail in the "App Store" space. * I know Android and Maemo use very different architectures where applications are concerned, but that's irrelevant - the point is that installing or updating apps on Maemo when the repositories contain only a few hundred applications causes the Application Manager to grind to a halt. Such a system will become unworkable with a few thousand applications on such low powered devices, so the system needs to be re-thought and re-written. Maybe RPMs are more efficient than DEBs, if not Nokia are screwed big time. |
Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
I only use the repos. Nice catogorisation in them and nice real time keyword searching.
Ovi is utter crap. Nokia = best hardware worst software! Im glad meego has intel on board so thing may change for the next generation of devices. |
Re: Do you like using Ovi Store (Poll)
They need to buy a bunch of different Android phones, iPhones and Blackberries and learn something from the competition.
